The young man tucks his violin under his chin and begins to play. A hush falls over the few spectators in the largely empty opera house, who turn toward the bare stage. As his lilting notes float through the room, other people trickle in from the lobby to listen.
The young man sometimes closes his eyes as he plays, as if lost in the music. If his audience closed their eyes, too, they would never know the violinist standing before them has no right hand, only a stunted appendage with tiny stubs instead of fingers.
Which is fitting, because Adrian Anantawan prefers to be judged for what people hear, not what they see.

Scared of strength training? Before you shy away from lifting weights for good, check out the myriad of things it can do for your health.
Judy Smith of New York City works out at Uplift Fitness, a women’s-only gym where the classes focus on strength training just as much as calorie-blasting cardio, to boost her bone density while she tones her body. “The cardio is important, obviously, but strength is just as important,” she says. “All these studies say it’s important for bone density, it’s important when you age to make sure you have muscle mass, and you’re maintaining that muscle mass.” And when you add high-intensity cardio bursts to your strength-training plan, Uplift co-founder Helena Wolin reminds her clients, you really send your calorie burn through the roof.

Biologists briefly brought the extinct Pyrenean ibex back to life in 2003 by creating a clone from a frozen tissue sample harvested before the goat’s entire population vanished in 2000. The clone survived just seven minutes after birth, but it gave scientists hope that “de-extinction,” once a pipedream, could become a reality.
Ten years later, a group of researchers and conservationists gathered in Washington, D.C., today (March 15) for a forum called TEDxDeExtinction, hosted by the National Geographic Society, to talk about how to revive extinct animals, from the Tasmanian tiger and the saber-toothed tiger to the woolly mammoth and the North American passenger pigeon.

An often-despised common household pest may have disproven a deeply rooted biological principle — the idea that, as far as evolution is concerned, you can’t go backward.
Who’s the culprit? The lowly dust mite. By examining and mapping out the phylogenetic tree of the mite in a new study, researchers at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor have found that evolution is reversible.
The idea has always been “once a parasite, always a parasite,” study co-author Dr. Barry OConnor, a professor at the university’s Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, told The Huffington Post. But his recent study suggests otherwise.
.

Dust mites may help prove that species do not hit an evolutionary “dead end,” according to a new study that suggests reversible evolution is possible on a complex ecological scale.

An Arkansas man accused of fatally shaking two of his infant children in separate angry outbursts was charged Thursday with two counts of first-degree murder.
A 7-month-old baby was brought Wednesday to Northwest Medical Center, where doctors found the boy to have suspicious injuries.
Under questioning, the baby’s father, Travis Fox, 24, of Springdale, told investigators “that he violently shook the child for an extended amount of time because the child was `fussing,'”police said in a news release.
“He demonstrated the shake and it was violent,” the release said.

An upstate New York man previously charged with having child pornography cut an electronic monitoring device off his ankle before carjacking a woman, fatally stabbing her and raping her 10-year-old daughter, authorities said.
David J. Renz, 29, abducted a school librarian and her daughter as they left a gymnastics class at a mall in the Syracuse suburb of Clay at about 9 p.m. Thursday, state police said Friday.
Troopers said he bound both victims, raped the child and drove a short distance to a spot where the girl managed to escape and was found by a passing motorist.
