Snocross and motocross racer Mike Schultz had been a longtime competitor in the Winter X Games before losing his left leg in a tragic snocross racing accident in 2008. However, the inspirational business owner used the tragic event to better his life and the lives of other action sports enthusiasts.
In this exclusive video, Schultz shares the gruesome details of that fateful day. “It was a pretty big hit,” he recalls of the moment he found out that his leg would need to be amputated above the knee.
When he returned from the hospital, he “got sick of sitting around” and started building a special knee and prosthetic leg to accommodate his passion for riding. Soon the Moto Knee was born.
“I use a little Fox mountain bike shock and it has compressed air in it so when I put my weight down into it, the spring pushes me back up,” Schultz says of the design.

“I think the statistics today talk about 609 million credit cards that are in existence, just here in the U.S.,” says Ron Klein, the inventor of the magnetic credit card strip. “When I hear those kinds of numbers, I almost have to be apologetic.” Even though his invention changed credit cards forever, he said he never made much money off the patent.
Like any good inventor, Klein identified a problem and created a solution. When Klein returned to the states after serving in the Korean War, he found that the way stores were handling so-called “charge purchases” was needlessly complicated. Klein used similar technology that was used in reel-to-reel tape recorders to create readable strips on credit cards.
Don’t feel too bad for Klein’s lack of monetary gain, though. He made more than enough money from his other inventions, including a “nutrition system” to raise chickens more efficiently.

President Barack Obama announced Wednesday that he is nominating former first daughter Caroline Kennedy as U.S. ambassador to Japan, offering the most famous living member of a prominent American family a new role of service to country.
Kennedy, an attorney and bestselling book editor, is being rewarded for helping put Obama in the White House where her father served until his assassination 50 years ago. If confirmed, she would be the first woman in a post where many other prominent Americans have served to strengthen a vital Asian tie.
Kennedy helped propel Obama to the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination in a celebrated endorsement over Hillary Rodham Clinton – the only time she’s endorsed a presidential candidate other than her uncle Ted Kennedy in 1980. She was a co-chair of Obama’s vice presidential search committee and in the 2012 race served as one of 35 national co-chairs of his re-election campaign.

President Barack Obama will ask the State Department not to approve the construction of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline unless it can first determine that it will not lead to a net increase in greenhouse gas emissions, a senior administration official told The Huffington Post. “Allowing the Keystone pipeline to be built requires a finding that doing so would be in our nation’s interest,” the president said in a Tuesday speech on climate change. “And our national interest will be served only if this project does not significantly exacerbate the problem of carbon pollution. The net effects of the pipeline’s impact on our climate will be absolutely critical to determining whether this project is allowed to go forward.”

Name: Liz Taylor
Age: 23
Height: 5’4″
Before Weight: 276 pounds
How I Gained It: I have been overweight most of my life. Growing up I was very active, four-wheeling trail in my backyard, jumping on the trampoline, riding my bike, exploring the woods. But as active as I was, I ate just as much, especially junk food. Cake, ice-cream, chips, candy — I ate it all, and I ate a lot of it. I was lucky enough to have a mother who enjoyed cooking and made homemade biscuits, macaroni and cheese, cakes from scratch, cubed steaks. However, all of this combined was not good for my self-esteem. Up until I was around 12 years old, I never cared about how I looked. My hair was almost always thrown in a ponytail, I wore baggy sweatpants and sweaters and had huge glasses. I was teased periodically for my looks, but it was not until I was a sophomore in high school that it became worse.

After many years of searching, Israeli archaeologists announced Thursday the discovery of a large palace and storeroom believed to have once belonged to the Biblical monarch King David.
“The ruins are the best example to date of the uncovered fortress city of King David,” lead researchers Yossi Garfinkel and Saar Ganor said, according to the Jerusalem Post. “This is indisputable proof of the existence of a central authority in Judah during the time of King David.”
The excavation was a joint project led by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Israel Antiquities Authorities that took place over seven years at Khirbet Qeiyafa, roughly 18 miles southwest of Jerusalem, according to a news release from the Israeli Antiquities Authority (IAA).
Finding evidence of King David, who is believed to have ruled over the Kingdom of Judah during the 10th century BCE, is a common goal of researchers in Israel because of his prominent role in Biblical history, the New York Times notes. A palace could help prove that King David was an impressive man, as the Bible suggests, and not a small chieftain.
.
Researchers working outside Jerusalem recently announced they found evidence of what may be King David’s palace.

Forty-four years (and three days) after it helped launch the first men to walk on the moon, a huge rocket engine part salvaged from the ocean floor has been positively identified as a historic component of the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission.
“I’m thrilled to share some exciting news,” Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos wrote Friday (July 19) on his Bezos Expeditions website. “44 years ago tomorrow [July 20] Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon, and now we have recovered a critical technological marvel that made it all possible.”
In March 2012, the billionaire entrepreneur underwrote a private — and secret — expedition to find and recover the Apollo engines that launched astronauts Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins to the moon.

In a surprise twist to an already brazen killing, a woman who fatally shot a man in public at a gas station also apparently videotaped the victim as he lay dying on the ground.
The altercation between the victim, Daniel Lewis, and an unnamed woman occurred around 7 p.m. Sunday evening at a gas station on Houston’s southeast side, according to local ABC affiliate KTRK.
In an argument captured on surveillance camera, Lewis and the woman appear to argue for a few minutes before she pulls what police believe to be a .22-caliber rifle out of her car and shoots Lewis several times at close range.
After shooting Lewis, the woman in the video then pulls out a camera phone and records the scene, according to Houston station KHOU. The woman eventually left the scene, but a witness recorded her license plate and police were able to track her down. She is currently being held for questioning, although no charges have yet been filed, according to KHOU.
“My brother is harmless, he’s harmless and he wouldn’t have hurt her. He wouldn’t have hurt nobody,” a man identifying himself as Lewis’ brother told KHOU. “She just didn’t know him, you know. Because if she’d have known my brother, she’d have known that Poochie wouldn’t have hurt nobody.”

Captain Greg Bounds is accustomed to dredging up “beer cans, fishing weights, and … garbage.”
But on Saturday, he made quite the find when he uncovered 48 gold coins, worth an estimated $250,000, off Florida’s Wabasso Beach, CNN reports.
The gold dates back to a shipwreck that occurred nearly 300 years ago, when a hurricane sunk Spanish galleons just off what is now called the Treasure Coast. Remarkably, the coins’ dates — which range from 1697 to 1714 — are still legible.
“You go out every day, hoping that it’s gonna happen, and a lot of times it doesn’t,” Bounds, who was hired by a salvage company, explained to WPTV. “But when it does, it’s just amazing, the feeling that you get.”
