How I Gained It: My abuse of sugar, as a substance to provide me that rush, began as a small child. I knew I had a problem because I could never understand why all of my friends were able to have entire pantries full of snacks and treats at all times. The pantry would not stay stocked in my house for longer than a day because instead of eating treats occasionally, I would eat until the entire stock was gone. This continued to be an on-and-off struggle for me throughout my adolescence and into early adulthood, but reached its peak when I entered into an extremely unhappy and dysfunctional marriage.

Before Weight: 260 pounds

How I Gained It: It started my first year of college. I was overwhelmed with change. I found comfort in bad eating habits during my rigorous studying. I would eat fast food at least four times a week, never incorporating vegetables or protein. I would eat two or three meals’ worth of food in one session. It was an excessive amount of food I was taking in.

After three years of my unhealthy habits, I had gained a total of 100 pounds. I didn’t realize what I was doing to myself. I would buy stretchy clothes or loose t-shirts. Every three months I would buy larger sizes.

How I Gained It: I have been overweight most of my life. Growing up I was very active, four-wheeling trail in my backyard, jumping on the trampoline, riding my bike, exploring the woods. But as active as I was, I ate just as much, especially junk food. Cake, ice-cream, chips, candy — I ate it all, and I ate a lot of it. I was lucky enough to have a mother who enjoyed cooking and made homemade biscuits, macaroni and cheese, cakes from scratch, cubed steaks. However, all of this combined was not good for my self-esteem. Up until I was around 12 years old, I never cared about how I looked. My hair was almost always thrown in a ponytail, I wore baggy sweatpants and sweaters and had huge glasses. I was teased periodically for my looks, but it was not until I was a sophomore in high school that it became worse.

How I Gained It: Two back-to-back pregnancies, postpartum depression and binge eating to cope with my feelings. Every day was a struggle for me. I could barely keep up with my boys. I was always tired, out of breath and absolutely miserable. I was ashamed and embarrassed and dodged as many family photos as I could.

Breaking Point: My son Caleb took off running from me at the mall. I was so big that I could not catch up to him. I will never forget the panic mixed with that burning sensation in my throat. That was it. I made up my mind to do something about my weight because I had let myself get out of control long enough.

Name: Joseph D. Airdo
Height: 5’8″
Age: 60
Before Weight: 460 pounds

How I Gained It: I started to gain weight in the early 80s by eating anything and everything.

I was a 60 in the waist, a 7-XL in the shirt and very lazy. I was driving a Cadillac DeVille and had to have the driver’s seat moved back at an automotive shop. When I went by other people’s houses, I was always breaking chairs and furniture. It was very embarrassing. I was falling asleep at red lights.

In recent times, DEPRESSION has been the major cause of suicide. ANGER has led to premature death, LOW SELF ESTEEM has led to suicide because they do not see themselves as being able to carry on with life and feel others are better than they are. I have taken it upon myself to listen and write to the public and victims of these. If distance cannot make me listen and interact with you physically, then I hope my message would reach and touch your heart knowing that you are not in this alone and you can come out of it. Also, mastering the habits of a healthy lifestyle, peace of mind, better communication will have a great impact on your journey through life. I will be sharing my personal stories and stories of individuals but their actual names won't be mentioned. Most of these stories will be written in the first person narrative. Promising you a noteworthy read! Cheers!
