We’ve already read about 3D-printing liquid metal. Now, a new patent awarded to Apple hints at the possibility of the company introducing liquid metals to the mobile market.
Apple is looking to incorporate 3D-printing liquid metal into its products, with the help of partner company Liquidmetal Technologies, whose patented fabrication processing rights were bought by Apple in 2010. The tech giant therefore holds the exclusive license for the development and sale of the processed liquid alloys.
According to Electronista, “The material is a group of alloys that have an atomic structure more similar to glass, with an amorphous quality.” This means the alloy can be molded into very complex shapes, all while maintaining strength.
Your next iPhone, iPad or even iWatch could potentially be encased in this printed alloy. As the technology develops, it’s possible that Apple may apply the material to even larger objects.

The scratching sound that Rochelle Harris kept hearing was all in her head — literally.
After the British tourist returned from a vacation in Peru earlier this year, she started experiencing headaches, shooting pains down the side of her face and an unexplained discharge from one ear.
Those symptoms, plus the bizarre scratching sounds she continued hearing, prompted Harris to visit a doctor soon after her return to England.
Though doctors at first dismissed the symptoms as nothing more than an ear infection, specialists soon made a startling discovery: Harris’ ear was filled with flesh-eating worms, according to the Daily Mail.
The worms that Harris, 27, was hosting were the larvae of the New World screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax). The fly is a notorious livestock pest that also seeks out pets, zoo animals and occasionally humans as hosts.

There is nothing like a biblical plague landing on your face to make you question the importance of importance of physical appearance. I was 24 years old when I noticed a massive knot on my face that caused my left eye to close slightly. I was sure that something horrible had bitten me and was equally sure that some topical cream and an antibiotic would cure it. But when my normally personality-less dermatologist sat down beside me, put his hand on my arm and said, “You are so young and pretty. I am so sorry,” I knew I was wrong on both counts.
At the time the plague descended, I was a trainer for a mid-sized bank, which called for me to present in front of people on a regular basis. I was also getting married soon… that special time in a girl’s life when you prepare for that walk down the runway that church folks call an aisle.

No one likes to queue. Even the British who, it’s often joked, invented the orderly line, are getting sick of it. Recent research suggests most Britons are now prepared to tolerate queueing for only four minutes.
Yet the average British shopper spends a painful 53 minutes a month in supermarket queues. Together with all the time spent waiting for buses and trains, it mounts up to nearly six months of queueing in a lifetime. Haven’t we got anything better to do?
No wonder, then, that stores spend millions of pounds trying to reduce their customers’ queueing time.
First came barcode scanners, then the super-irritating self-service checkouts made famous for their constant refrain of ‘unexpected item in the bagging area’. But now all the waits and irritation could be in the past with the arrival of the Rapid Scan.

A 6-year-old girl who went missing last week was found dead in a Dumpster early Tuesday morning near the apartment complex where she lived.
Louisiana police say that Ahlittia North was last seen by her mother and stepfather when they put her to bed around 11 p.m. Friday night, WWLTV reports.
The next day, North — along with her blanket, toothbrush and toothpaste — were gone.
Lisa North, who reported her daughter missing, was contacted by authorities Tuesday around 1 a.m., shortly after the girl’s body was discovered.
“I didn’t think they were going to tell me she was dead,” North, 20, told the Times-Picayune.
On Monday, authorities with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office identified 20-year-old Matthew Flugence as a “person of interest.” Flugence is a relative of North, WDSU reports.

Robert Vann Marshall was shot and killed by his wife as he was allegedly breaking an order of protection between them.
A Tennessee man was shot and killed by his wife less than 15 minutes after he was released from jail.
Robert Vann Marshall, 34, allegedly broke an order of protection Saturday barring him from going anywhere near his wife. Earlier that day, he was thrown in the slammer and given the order because he allegedly threatened to kill his wife and children, WBIR reported.
At 1:27 p.m., he was released from jail. At 1:38 p.m., officers received a call from Marshall’s wife at their McMinn County home, during which she claimed her husband was forcing his way inside the home. Police said he was irate, suicidal and possibly armed.
“His wife called 911 and was telling our dispatchers that he was trying to break into the residence,” McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy told WRCB. “She retreated into the back bedroom, and at some point fired a shot and he was killed.”

Uh-oh, everybody: Bankers are warning that the U.S. economy could be in deep trouble. Not because bankers wrecked it again, like that last time, but because we are being mean to bankers.
Fortunately, these bankers are probably wrong.
Like they do, bank flaks have rushed to warn that the higher bank capital requirements proposed on Tuesday by the Federal Reserve, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation will slow down lending and economic growth, make U.S. banks less competitive against European competitors and be cruel to puppies and kittens.
The first quote in Wednesday’s Wall Street Journal story (subscription only) about the new capital rules, in fact, is just such a warning from a banking representative:
“Ever-higher capital requirements, while a critically important element of safety and soundness, can become prohibitive and actually lead to reduced capability to lend,” Rob Nichols, president of the Financial Services Forum, a lobbying group for the Too Big To Fail set, tells the WSJ.

British police say they have launched a full investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, and want to trace 38 “persons of interest” in the case.
Detectives say it’s possible that Madeleine, who vanished from a Portuguese holiday resort six years ago, is still alive.
Scotland Yard said Thursday that 12 of the individuals of interest are British, and the rest from a variety of European countries. The force says it is working with governments across the continent to find out more.
McCann vanished from a vacation home in Portugal’s Algarve region on May 3, 2007, days before her fourth birthday. The case has generated intense media interest.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood said police “continue to believe that there is a possibility that Madeleine is alive.”
