As of 5, black people had been killed by law enforcement officers in the United States in 2016 alone. The circumstances leading to their deaths varied greatly. The reasons, generally, did not.
Filmmaker Ava DuVernay, who directed the Academy Award-nominated Selma, explores these reasons in 13th, a powerful 200-minute documentary that premieres on Netflix Friday. The film tells the story of how white, wealthy and politically-powerful Americans responded to the abolition of slavery in by creating new forms of bondage for black people — and encoding them through a racist criminal justice system.
These forms of bondage included, but were not limited to, aggressive incarceration and its fallout, including parole. The film argues these systems are maintained today through racially asymmetrical law enforcement practices — including racial profiling by police and, more recently, mandatory minimum jail sentences for nonviolent drug offenses.

Donald Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R), spent much of the first and only vice presidential debate Tuesday night doing his damnedest to get Americans to forget all of the offensive things Trump has said.
Pence repeatedly tried to skirt around statements Trump actually said — or simply shook his head and ignored the question.
“I’m happy to defend [Trump],” Pence said.
But Pence rarely actually defended Trump. Instead, he dodged or outright denied his running mate’s statements.

As he loves to do whenever he talks about himself, Donald Trump on Monday told a Colorado audience that all his business success stemmed from “a small loan” from his father ― a virtual Horatio Alger story.
Which would be true ― if, instead of rags-to-riches tales, Alger had written about people who start with massive fortunes and then whittle them away.
Because as rich as the Republican presidential nominee is, his stewardship of the $200 million real estate empire he took control of four decades ago has failed to keep pace with either the general real estate market or the economy as a whole.

On March 23, 2010, President Barack Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the 906-page health care reform law known as Obamacare. It was, as a live microphone caught Vice President Joe Biden exclaiming to his boss, a big deal, with Biden memorably inserting an extra word for emphasis—and for history—between “big” and “deal.”
Obamacare would cover millions of the uninsured, a giant step toward the Democratic dream of health care for all. It also included dozens of less prominent provisions to rein in the soaring cost and transform the dysfunctional delivery of American medicine. It was the kind of BFD that the most consequential presidencies are made of, even though it had squeaked through Congress without any Republican votes, and few Americans truly understood what was in it.

Mass shootings have become unfortunately common in American life, so a few Silicon Valley investors are launching a $1 million competition to see if technology can reduce firearm violence. With the help of early Facebook investor Ron Conway, the Smart Tech Foundation is soliciting ideas on everything from biometric locks to crime-predicting algorithms.
“We looked at this and said there’s been a systemic failure in the level of innovation and capitalization in this area,” Smart Tech director and serial entrepreneur Jim Pitkow told Fast Company. He announced the program at Fast Company’s Innovation Uncensored conference in San Francisco yesterday.
This isn’t the first time Silicon Valley (and Conway) have incentivized their tech brethren to stop gun violence. Three months after Adam Lanza killed 20 children at Sandy Hook elementary, Conway’s Sandy Hook Promise launched a program to expedite investment in violence-reducing technologies.
For example, ShotSpotter outfits local law enforcement with an alert systems that can triangulate violence based on the audio-signal of a gunshot (the technology still has some bugs to get worked out).

It may be a little late to the party, but Rhapsody today updated its app to meet the looks of Apple’s iOS 7. Aside from going the flat route on the overall design, the application has also been improved with a number of handy features throughout. Listeners will now see a swipe-to-reveal menu (much like on Android), as well as a revamped radio experience which includes brand new stations from different artists and the option to thumb tracks up or down. In addition, this version lets you favorite any song being played, making it easy to access them at any point from the My Music section. If you’re a Rhapsody subscriber, expect more things to come to the web and mobile apps in the near future — the music service says it has “a lot of great things cooking.”

The debate over how much work a museum should digitize, and at what quality, and for whom, is still being argued. But this week, the Getty Museum and Research Institute in L.A. came down hard on the free-and-good side, when it doubled its online art collection.
More than 10,000 works housed in the hilltop complex can now be downloaded in high resolution by any person with an internet connection. These include masterpieces like Vincent Van Gogh’s “Irises,” painted by the Dutch artist during his small window of good health at the Provençal asylum where he died.
Digitization involves “high-tech gadgets,” says Andrew Perchuk, deputy director of the Getty Research Institute. One such gadget is Treventus, a robot that uses compressed air and lasers to scan a book one page at a time. “It turns the pages,” Perchuk explains. “It’s not 100 percent automated — somebody still has to supervise it — but it can photograph very, very quickly.”

Earlier this month an online raffle gave art admirers the opportunity to own their very own Picasso drawing for just $135. It might seem like a bargain, but with 50,000 raffle tickets available, the $1 million artwork could stand to raise $6.75 million in the end (with all proceeds going toward the preservation of the ancient city of Tyre).
That sum, however, doesn’t hold a candle to an upcoming sale of 29 Picasso artworks at Christie’s in New York City, heading to auction courtesy of the famed collector Jan Krugier. Including wood sculptures, minotaur sketches and portraits of Paloma, the bevy of Picasso masterpieces are set to hit the bidding block at the same time, with one lot alone boasting a $35 million high estimate.
