When NYPD Officer Larry DePrimo bought boots for a homeless man who had blisters “the size of his palm,” he never expected anything in return.
But now that a photo of the cop’s act of kindness has surfaced, the Internet is swelling with praise for the do-gooder who says he was spurred to action when he saw people laughing at the man on the 35-degree night, according to the New York Post.

SAN FRANCISCO — Howard Kuljian and his family were out for a walk on a damp, overcast morning at Big Lagoon beach, playing fetch with their dog Fran as 10-foot surf churned the water just feet away like a washing machine.
Signs near the beach warned of “sneaker waves,” the kind that suddenly roar ashore.
Kuljian tossed a stick that took the dog down to the water’s edge, and in an instant, authorities said, a wave swallowed it, setting off a nightmarish scramble.

Much has been made of the so-called 2012 Mayan apocalypse. But for the real Maya people, the end of the world came slowly and timed with historic droughts.
A new, ultra-detailed climate record from a cave in Belize reveals Classic Maya civilization collapsed over centuries as rain dried up, disrupting agriculture and causing instability that led to wars and the crumbling of large cities. A final major drought after the political collapse of the Maya may be what kept the civilization from bouncing back.

There are some 120 species of duck, representing a wide variety of shapes, sizes and behaviors. Some are noisy and gregarious, others shy and elusive. They are familiar animals we think we know. But most of us don’t really know these phenomenal, sophisticated creatures at all. This program follows a wood duck family as a male and female create a bond, migrate together across thousands of miles, nurture and protect a brood of chicks, then come full circle as they head to their wintering grounds.

This video is really fantastic, it show the good side of our human species. They worked so hard with one little knife to free the whale, it is somewhat frightening when you consider that the whale was larger than the boat. But the whale knew they were trying to help it and didn’t panic, in which case they might have all died.

Brown tree snakes in Guam have wildlife officials there seeing red. That’s why the officials are air-dropping poisoned mice as a lethal treat for the mildly venomous serpents, an invasive species that has devastated native animal populations on the Pacific island, the BBC reported.

Though we’re sure they have their reasons for existing, we consider moths to be the ‘black sheep’ cousin of butterflies. They have those dull wings, they eat our sweaters and they do things like lay eggs in carpets. (We’ll let that one sink in for a moment.) Moths also have a distinct way of startling you by flying spastically out of cupboards, closets and near light sources. No wonder we’ve seen an uptick of people asking for ways to get rid of moths.

NEW YORK — Two young brothers swept from the arms of their mother by the violent sea at the height of Superstorm Sandy were found dead in a marsh Thursday, a tragic exclamation mark on an epic storm.
The boys, 2-year-old Brandon and 4-year-old Connor Moore, were sucked into the swirling floodwaters as their mother, Glenda Moore, tried to escape her SUV after it stalled Monday in the deluge on Staten Island, one of the areas hardest hit by the storm that has claimed 90 lives.
