New York City reached a settlement with the family of Eric Garner on Monday, agreeing to pay $5.9 million to resolve a wrongful-death claim over his killing by the police on Staten Island last July, the city comptroller and a lawyer for the family said.
The agreement, reached a few days before the anniversary of Mr. Garner’s death, headed off one legal battle even as a federal inquiry into the killing and several others at the state and local level remain open and could provide a further accounting of how he died.
Still, the settlement was a pivotal moment in a case that has engulfed the city since the afternoon of July 17, 2014, when two officers approached Mr. Garner as he stood unarmed on a sidewalk, and accused him of selling untaxed cigarettes. One of the officers used a chokehold — prohibited by the Police Department — to subdue him, and that was cited by the medical examiner as a cause of Mr. Garner’s death.

Attacks by the New York City police unions on Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) may have backfired.
New York City voters across racial lines disapprove of recent protests in which police officers turned their backs on de Blasio at the funeral of two police officers slain in the line of duty, a new Quinnipiac poll says .
Black, white and Hispanic voters disapprove of the decision by police officers to turn their backs 69 percent to 27 percent, the poll says.

Two New York City police officers, Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, were shot dead “execution style” in Brooklyn just before 3 p.m. Saturday, police said, by an alleged gang member who posted on social media that he wanted revenge for the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.
“Quite simply, they were assassinated,” NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said at a press conference held Saturday evening at the hospital where the grieving families gathered. “Both officers paid the ultimate sacrifice today while protecting the communities they serve.”
Liu and Ramos may have never seen the attacker open fire as they were sitting in their patrol car, Bratton said, on special duty because of heightened violence in the area.

A grand jury in Staten Island voted Wednesday not to indict New York City police officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death of Eric Garner, a black man who died after being placed in a chokehold.
Garner, 43, died July 17 while he was being arrested for selling untaxed cigarettes. In a video of the arrest, which has since gone viral, Garner screams “I can’t breathe!” multiple times until his body goes limp. A medical examiner later said that he died of a chokehold, a move that is banned by the NYPD, and ruled his death a homicide.
Garner’s attorney said Wednesday that the “family is very upset and disappointed that these officers are not getting indicted for any criminal conduct.”

New York photographer Dominick Williams was walking down the street in Queens last Thursday afternoon when he spotted four NYPD rookie officers joking around on patrol. Williams snapped a slice-of-life photo.
“I saw these cops just chillin’,” the 21-year-old told The Huffington Post. “And I asked them if I could capture the moment.”
The officers obliged, kidding him not to blast the photos all over social media. Williams took a photo, then another. Before he could take a third, a hatchet-wielding man — identified as 32-year-old Zale Thompson — ran at the cops, swinging his weapon wildly.

In a Sunday appeal from the pulpit, the Rev. Al Sharpton demanded justice for a man he said was choked to death by New York City police but added that citizens who attack police officers also should be held accountable.
The activist minister and television host spoke at Manhattan’s Riverside Church three days after the death of Eric Garner on a Staten Island street.
Garner was “choked by New York City policemen,” the Harlem preacher told the congregation. “What bothers me is that the nation watches a man say ‘I can’t breathe’ and the choking continues, and police surround him and none of them even say, ‘Wait a minute, stop! He can’t breathe!'”

Julio Acevedo was arrested Wednesday in connection to a Brooklyn hit-and-run crash that killed an entire family.
Cops confirm Acevedo, 44, was nabbed walking out of a Turkey Hill convenient store in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, shortly after 5p.m.
Acevedo, who told The Daily News in an exclusive interview Tuesday that he would surrender to authorities, had been a fugitive for four days following the deadly Sunday crash, which claimed the lives of Nachman and Raizy Glauber. The crash also later killed the couple’s newborn child, who was delivered alive after Raizy was pronounced dead.

NEW YORK — Two young brothers swept from the arms of their mother by the violent sea at the height of Superstorm Sandy were found dead in a marsh Thursday, a tragic exclamation mark on an epic storm.
The boys, 2-year-old Brandon and 4-year-old Connor Moore, were sucked into the swirling floodwaters as their mother, Glenda Moore, tried to escape her SUV after it stalled Monday in the deluge on Staten Island, one of the areas hardest hit by the storm that has claimed 90 lives.
