A 10-year-old girl whose efforts to qualify for an organ donation spurred public debate over how organs are allocated underwent a successful double-lung transplant on Wednesday, the girl’s family said.
Sarah Murnaghan, who suffers from severe cystic fibrosis, received new lungs from an adult donor at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, spokeswoman Tracy Simon said.
The Murnaghan family said it was “thrilled” to share the news that Sarah was out of surgery.
“Her doctors are very pleased with both her progress during the procedure and her prognosis for recovery,” the family said in a statement.

Smooth, round pebbles found by NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity provide more evidence that water once flowed on the Red Planet, according to a new study.
The Curiosity rover snapped pictures of several areas with densely packed pebbles, and by closely analyzing the rock images, researchers discovered that the shapes and sizes of the individual pebbles indicate that they traveled long distances in water, likely as part of an ancient riverbed.
The rocks were found near Curiosity’s landing site, between the north rim of Gale Crater and the base of Mount Sharp, a peak that rises 3 miles (5 kilometers) above the crater floor.
.

The Curiosity rover investigated an area on Mars named Hottah, which appears to be part of an ancient riverbed.

We know that a nightcap — or three — won’t help us drift off into a peaceful slumber. But we didn’t know exactly why it sets us up for a restless, sweaty, snore-y, anxious night.
By Valerie Ross
Thanks to an April 2013 review of 20 studies — and to the more than 500 people who drank in the name of science and then turned in for the night in a sleep lab so that researchers could record their brainwaves — it’s been confirmed: If you only have a bit to drink, alcohol can help you sleep better during the first part of the night, spurring an increase in slow-wave sleep, which the body needs in order to repair tissues and strengthen the immune system, and leaving dream-studded REM sleep untouched. Too much booze, however, can interrupt REM sleep, which is vital for memory and concentration. As the alcohol wears off during the second part of the night, sleep is often disrupted, the review found, as people frequently wake up. (In some cases, they’ll also start sweating, feel anxious or — if they do manage to get some REM sleep — have nightmares.) But that’s only the beginning of how alcohol gets between you and a decent night’s rest.

The personal ads that Dr. Ali Salim placed on Craigslist – and police say he posted hundreds of them – made one thing clear: He wanted “no drama.”
He didn’t always get his wish.
One woman told police she was accosted at Salim’s house. Another said she was sexually assaulted. Another woman left after she said Salim insisted she pose in her underwear while he painted the digestive system on her abdomen.
The final drama, police and prosecutors say, occurred July 31 when Deanna Ballman, nine months pregnant with two young children at home, disappeared after answering one of Salim’s ads. Ballman’s body was found the next day in the backseat of her car on a country road a few miles from Salim’s house.
.

Ali Salim pleaded not guilty to killing Deanna Ballman.

“TODAY” featured the amazing update of Aimee Copeland, who lost her left leg, right foot and both hands to a rare, flesh-eating bacteria called necrotizing fasciitis last year while ziplining. She received a new pair of high-tech prosthetic hands called Touch Bionics that will change her life. With the new hands, which she got for free for being the technology’s spokesperson, she’s now able to write her name, slice strawberries and relearn how to use utensils.

The moon has a new hole on its surface thanks to a boulder that slammed into it in March, creating the biggest explosion scientists have seen on the moon since they started monitoring it.
The meteorite crashed on March 17, slamming into the lunar surface at a mind-boggling 56,000 mph (90,000 kph) and creating a new crater 65 feet wide (20 meters). The crash sparked a bright flash of light that would have been visible to anyone looking at the moon at the time with the naked eye, NASA scientists say.
“On March 17, 2013, an object about the size of a small boulder hit the lunar surface in Mare Imbrium,” Bill Cooke of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office said in a statement. “It exploded in a flash nearly 10 times as bright as anything we’ve ever seen before.” [The Greatest Lunar Crashes Ever]

Pope Celestine V was an elderly, possibly frail man. After living as a self-flagellating hermit in Italy, he served as pontiff for only five months before resigning at the end of the 13th century. Since his death, the so-called “Hermit Pope” has been the subject of much speculation and intrigue, with legend holding that the he was murdered by his successor, Boniface VIII.
During examinations of Celestine’s remains, a small, mysterious hole found on his skull led some to believe he died from trauma to the head. But a recent examination of the pope’s skeleton suggests this murder theory might be false. Instead, Celestine may have died slowly from natural causes as he languished in Boniface’s castle prison, where he was locked away soon after his resignation prompted fears that two popes could cause a schism in the Church.
.

Celestine V’s remains, newly outfitted with a silver mask and papl vestmetns, lie in repose at the Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio, in central Italy.

An 87-year-old Swiss woman who suffered painful spasms in her chest turned out to have an esophagus that twisted itself into a corkscrew shape whenever she swallowed, according to a report of her case.
The woman had lost 11 pounds in the past several months, and told doctors she had cramplike spasms shortly after eating.
Her doctors performed an endoscopy and found that, when she swallowed, her esophagus had the same helical shape as a playground twisty slide.
X-ray images revealed the startling, corkscrew shape taking form.
“The magnitude of this finding was extraordinary,” said Dr. Luc Biedermann, of the University Hospital Zurich, who treated the woman and reported the case in this week’s New England Journal of Medicine.
