A number of Tunisian women have traveled to Syria to have sex with rebel fighters, a senior Tunisian politician said Thursday. The practice is known as “sexual jihad.”
The women “are swapped between 20, 30, 100 rebels,” Interior Minister Lotfi Bin Jeddo told an assembly of Tunisian lawmakers, according to Al Arabiya. “We are doing nothing and standing idle.”
“After the sexual liaisons they have there in the name of ‘jihad al-nikah,’ they come home pregnant,” he said, according to Agence France-Presse. (Jihad al-nikah is an Arabic phrase meaning “sexual holy war,” AFP explains.)
Jeddo did not specify how many Tunisian women have traveled to the embattled Muslim country.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is rejecting Syrian President Bashar Assad’s suggestion Thursday that he begin submitting data on his chemical weapons arsenal one month after signing an international chemical weapons ban.
Speaking at a news conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Kerry noted that Assad said a 30-day lead time would be standard.
“There is nothing standard about this process,” Kerry said, because Assad has used his chemical weapons.
“The words of the Syrian regime in our judgment are simply not enough.”
Kerry cautioned that a U.S. military strike could occur if Assad doesn’t agree to dismantle his chemical arsenal properly.
He said, “There ought to be consequences if it doesn’t take place.”

In July 2012, Fighters loyal to embattled Syrian president Bashar al-Assad launched a full-scale assault to recapture the northern city of Aleppo, which had fallen into rebel hands. In a banner headline, pro-government newspaper Al Watan predicted the fight would be the “mother of all battles” for the future of Syria. A little over a year later, that harrowing prediction has mostly come true.
Much of Syria’s most-populous city now lies in ruin, buildings and lives torn apart by a seemingly endless barrage of missiles, bombs, mortars, and tank shells. In a series of new satellite images, Amnesty International offers a glimpse into the extent of the destruction brought on by a year of fighting between government troops and opposition forces.

Alicia Keys’ visit to Israel for her July 4 concert in Tel Aviv elicited controversy. Many had wanted her to cancel her performance because they believe Israel is a racist, “apartheid state.” The notion that Israel is an apartheid state is completely absurd. In Israel, there are no laws that relegate any racial group to second-class citizenship. Israelis, whether they are white or black, Jewish, Christian, Muslim or anything else, have the right to vote and have freedom of speech, press, religion, etc. In fact, Israel is the only nation in the Middle East where Christians, Muslims and Jews have complete freedom of religion.

After many years of searching, Israeli archaeologists announced Thursday the discovery of a large palace and storeroom believed to have once belonged to the Biblical monarch King David.
“The ruins are the best example to date of the uncovered fortress city of King David,” lead researchers Yossi Garfinkel and Saar Ganor said, according to the Jerusalem Post. “This is indisputable proof of the existence of a central authority in Judah during the time of King David.”
The excavation was a joint project led by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Israel Antiquities Authorities that took place over seven years at Khirbet Qeiyafa, roughly 18 miles southwest of Jerusalem, according to a news release from the Israeli Antiquities Authority (IAA).
Finding evidence of King David, who is believed to have ruled over the Kingdom of Judah during the 10th century BCE, is a common goal of researchers in Israel because of his prominent role in Biblical history, the New York Times notes. A palace could help prove that King David was an impressive man, as the Bible suggests, and not a small chieftain.
.
Researchers working outside Jerusalem recently announced they found evidence of what may be King David’s palace.

The military’s highest court overturned a murder conviction Wednesday against a Camp Pendleton Marine in one of the most significant cases against American troops from the Iraq war.
The Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces threw out the conviction of Sgt. Lawrence Hutchins III of Plymouth, Mass., who has served about half of his 11-year sentence.
According to the ruling posted on the court’s website, the judges agreed with Hutchins, who claimed his constitutional rights were violated when he was held in solitary confinement without access to a lawyer for seven days during his 2006 interrogation in Iraq.
The decision is seen as a major blow to the military’s prosecution of Iraqi war crimes.
Hutchins led an eight-man squad accused of kidnapping an Iraqi man from his home in April 2006, marching him to a ditch and shooting him to death in the village of Hamdania.

Two popes prayed together Friday at the Vatican, one Catholic and one Orthodox, in a sign of improving ties following the election of new leaders for both churches.
Pope Francis welcomed the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Egypt, Pope Tawadros II, in the first such meeting at the Vatican in 40 years, saying his visit “strengthens the bonds of friendship and brotherhood” between the two churches.
The Coptic and Catholic churches split in the fifth century over theocratic differences.
Christians comprise about 10 percent of Egypt’s population. The Coptic Orthodox Church of Egypt counts about 10 million faithful, while the Coptic Catholic Church in Egypt – whose faithful are loyal to Pope Francis – counts about 165,000.

Turkey is investigating an alleged plot to assassinate Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians, and has stepped up security around the patriarchate in Istanbul, his spokesman said on Friday.
Spokesman Dositheos Anagnostopoulos said the patriarch had not received any direct threats but had learned of the alleged plot from Turkish media, which was later confirmed to the patriarchate by Turkish police.
“Later in the day, police informed the patriarchate of a possible threat and dispatched additional police officers,” Anagnostopoulos said.
Turkish broadcaster NTV said one man had been arrested in relation to the alleged plot, after state prosecutors in central Kayseri province received an anonymous letter saying there was a plan to assasinate Bartholomew on May 29, the anniversary of the Ottoman conquest of present-day Istanbul.
