‘Britain’s Atlantis’ – a hidden underwater world swallowed by the North Sea – has been discovered by divers working with science teams from the University of St Andrews.
Doggerland, a huge area of dry land that stretched from Scotland to Denmark was slowly submerged by water between 18,000 BC and 5,500 BC.
- Divers have found traces of ancient land swallowed by waves 8500 years ago
- Doggerland once stretched from Scotland to Denmark
- Rivers seen underwater by seismic scans
- Britain was not an island – and area under North Sea was roamed by mammoths and other giant animals
- Described as the ‘real heartland’ of Europe
- Had population of tens of thousands – but devastated by sea level rises

A new species of monkey with a distinctive blue rear end has been identified in Africa, researchers have said. The species, known locally as the lesula, was discovered after a young female was seen kept captive at the home of a primary school director in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2007.
The young animal resembled an owl faced monkey (Cercopithecus hamlyni) but the colour of its rear end was different to that of any known species, the researchers writing in the journal PLoS ONE said.

A stem cell gel developed by scientists can regenerate broken spinal cord nerves, research has shown.
The gel is applied to the site of an injury. In rats with completely severed spinal cords, it produced an ‘astonishing degree’ of nerve growth, U.S. scientists said.

Identical twin sisters with the world’s rarest medical condition have been given the best 18th birthday present they could have wished for – their voices back.
Kirstie and Catherine Fields are the only two people on the planet who suffer from Fields Condition, a progressive muscle affliction which is so rare it was named after them.
Their illness robbed the women, from Llanelli, South Wales, of their voices four years ago – but they are talking again after being given electronic speech machines for their birthday.

The days of human lifeguards watching over us on the beach are numbered. Or at least they will be if the Japanese have got anything to do with it.
Researchers at the Tokyo Institute of Technology have unveiled a new robot modelled on Olympic athletes that could be the lifeguard of the future.
