When it comes to dealing with this divot, score one for golfer Mark Mihal.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/13QvcoX) reports that the mortgage broker from Creve Coeur, Mo., is recovering after a sinkhole opened up beneath him Friday on the fairway at the 14th hole of a southwestern Illinois golf course.
The pit that swallowed him was 18 feet deep and 10 feet wide.

It’s the sort of abstract puzzle that keeps a scientist awake at night: Can you predict how three objects will orbit each other in a repeating pattern? In the 300 years since this “three-body problem” was first recognized, just three families of solutions have been found. Now, two physicists have discovered 13 new families. It’s quite a feat in mathematical physics, and it could conceivably help astrophysicists understand new planetary systems.
The trove of new solutions has researchers jazzed. “I love these things,” says Robert Vanderbei, a mathematician at Princeton University who was not involved in the work. He says he, in fact, spent all night thinking about the work.
The three-body problem dates back to the 1680s. Isaac Newton had already shown that his new law of gravity could always predict the orbit of two bodies held together by gravity—such as a star and a planet—with complete accuracy. The orbit is basically always an ellipse. However, Newton couldn’t come up with a similar solution for the case of three bodies orbiting one another.
.

Solutions to the three-body problem, such as the “figure eight” and “yarn,” can be viewed on an abstract shape-sphere.

After a century of studying their tangled mathematics, physicists can tie almost anything into knots, including their own shoelaces and invisible underwater whirlpools. At least, they can now thanks to a little help from a 3D printer and some inspiration from the animal kingdom.
Physicists had long believed that a vortex could be twisted into a knot, even though they’d never seen one in nature or the even in the lab. Determined to finally create a knotted vortex loop of their very own, physicists at the University of Chicago designed a wing that resembles a delicately twisted ribbon and brought it to life using a 3D printer.

Birds can sing. They can dance. And they may even experience an emotional response to music similar to humans.
A new study from Emory University in Atlanta found that when birds hear birdsong, their brains show activity similar to that seen in humans when they listen to music.
“We found that the same neural reward system is activated in female birds in the breeding state that are listening to male birdsong, and in people listening to music that they like,” Sarah Earp, an Emory undergraduate who co-authored the study with neuroscientist Dr. Donna Maney, said in a written statement.

An Ohio man who was exonerated after spending 13 years in prison for murder cried as a federal jury found that two Cleveland police detectives violated his civil rights by coercing and falsifying testimony and withholding evidence that pointed to his innocence.
The jury’s verdict on Friday, which included awarding $13.2 million to David Ayers of Cleveland for his pain and suffering, brings an end to the legal battle he’s been fighting since his arrest in the 1999 killing of 76-year-old Dorothy Brown.

Julio Acevedo was arrested Wednesday in connection to a Brooklyn hit-and-run crash that killed an entire family.
Cops confirm Acevedo, 44, was nabbed walking out of a Turkey Hill convenient store in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, shortly after 5p.m.
Acevedo, who told The Daily News in an exclusive interview Tuesday that he would surrender to authorities, had been a fugitive for four days following the deadly Sunday crash, which claimed the lives of Nachman and Raizy Glauber. The crash also later killed the couple’s newborn child, who was delivered alive after Raizy was pronounced dead.

An Indonesian woman drowned her nine-year-old son in the bath, claiming she was worried that his “small penis” would affect his prospects for the future, a police spokesman said Thursday.
The 38-year-old woman from the capital Jakarta told police her son had had a small penis prior to being circumcised, but that it appeared to shrink further after the operation, police spokesman Rikwanto, who goes by one name, told AFP.

The Obama administration believes it could technically use military force to kill an American on U.S. soil in an “extraordinary circumstance” but has “no intention of doing so,” U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in a letter disclosed Tuesday.
Holder’s March 4 letter was disclosed by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who had asked whether the Justice Department believed President Barack Obama had the legal authority to order a targeted strike against an American citizen located within the United States.

In the second century, an ethnically Greek Roman named Galen became doctor to the gladiators. His glimpses into the human body via these warriors’ wounds, combined with much more systematic dissections of animals, became the basis of Islamic and European medicine for centuries.
Galen’s texts wouldn’t be challenged for anatomical supremacy until the Renaissance, when human dissections — often in public — surged in popularity. But doctors in medieval Europe weren’t as idle as it may seem, as a new analysis of the oldest-known preserved human dissection in Europe reveals.

This anatomical specimen dating to the 1200s is the oldest known in Europe.

As a 17-year-old who had been shot by his grandmother pleaded with a 911 dispatcher to send help, the 75-year-old woman shot him again, a prosecutor told jurors Tuesday in suburban Detroit.
Just as Jonathan Hoffman “thought he was safe … Sandra Layne walks up and shoots him again. This time in the stomach,” Paul Walton, Oakland County’s chief assistant prosecutor, said during his opening statement in Layne’s first-degree murder trial.
Defense attorney Jerome Sabbota countered that the diminutive Layne feared for her safety during the fatal May 18, 2012, confrontation in the West Bloomfield Township condo Hoffman shared with his grandparents.

Sandra Layne smiles at her family while entering the court room of Oakland Circuit Judge Denise Lagnford Morris for her murder trial in Pontiac, Mich. on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Layne is charged with fatally shooting her 17-year-old grandson. Layne has been jailed since May on first-degree murder and gun charges in the slaying of Jonathan Hoffman, who was shot multiple times May 18 in Oakland County’s West Bloomfield Township, northwest of Detroit. Hoffman was living with his grandmother while on 12 months’ probation.
