How To Wire Your Brain For Happiness

The secret to lasting happiness might be neatly summed up in a cheesy neuroscience joke: “The neurons that fire together, wire together.”

“It’s a classic saying, and it’s widely accepted because it’s very true,” neuropsychologist Rick Hanson, author of Hardwiring Happiness: The New Brain Science Of Contentment, Calm and Confidence, tells The Huffington Post. “The longer the neurons [brain cells] fire, the more of them that fire, and the more intensely they fire, the more they’re going to wire that inner strength –- that happiness, gratitude, feeling confident, feeling successful, feeling loved and lovable.”

But on a day to day basis, most of us don’t stay with our positive experiences long enough for them to be encoded into neural structure (meaning there’s not enough wiring and firing going on). On the other hand, we naturally tend to fixate on negative experiences. Positive and negative emotions use different memory systems in the brain, according to Hanson, and positive emotions don’t transfer as easily to long-term memory.

Hanson argues that the problem is we’re wired to scout for the bad stuff — as he puts it, the brain is like velcro for negative experience and teflon for positive ones.

10 Psychological Studies That Will Change What You Think You Know About Yourself

Why do we do the things we do? Despite our best attempts to “know thyself,” the truth is that we often know astonishingly little about our own minds, and even less about the way others think. As Charles Dickens once put it, “A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other.”

Psychologists have long sought insights into how we perceive the world and what motivates our behavior, and they’ve made enormous strides in lifting that veil of mystery. Aside from providing fodder for stimulating cocktail-party conversations, some of the most famous psychological experiments of the past century reveal universal and often surprising truths about human nature.

Resveratrol, Red Wine Compound, Could Make Radiation More Effective Against Melanoma

Resveratrol, a compound found in red wine and red grape skins, could make radiation treatment for cancer more effective, a new study suggests.

Researchers from the University of Missouri School of Medicine found that treating melanoma cells with resveratrol in a lab setting made them more susceptible to radiation.

“We’ve seen glimmers of possibilities, and it seems that resveratrol could potentially be very important in treating a variety of cancers,” study researcher Michael Nicholl, M.D., an assistant professor of surgery at the university, said in a statement. “It comes down to how to administer the resveratrol. If we can develop a successful way to deliver the compound to tumor sites, resveratrol could potentially be used to treat many types of cancers. Melanoma is very tricky due to the nature of how the cancer cells travel throughout the body, but we envision resveratrol could be combined with radiation to treat symptomatic metastatic tumors, which can develop in the brain or bone.”

Eating Peanut Butter Could Prevent Future Breast Disease

Girls who grow up eating PB&Js could be doing their breast health a favor.

Researchers from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School found an association between regularly eating peanut butter and having a lower risk of developing benign breast disease in early adulthood. Benign breast disease is noncancerous, and occurs when there are changes to the breast or an injury or infection leads to lumps in the breast tissue. The research team did not investigate a link between peanut butter and malignant breast lumps or cancer.

Other sources of vegetable fats and proteins — such as soybeans, beans and lentils — could also have the same effect, but researchers noted that the data on these particular foods in the study was not as abundant as data on peanut butter.

It’s important to note that the study only showed an association between peanut butter consumption and breast disease, and doesn’t show that peanut butter can definitively prevent breast disease.

How to Curb Your Inner Control Freak

As an overachieving kid, I was lauded for my top grades, my responsible and well-behaved nature. I succeeded in a rigorous private school, then went on to graduate Phi Beta Kappa from a reputable college. I showed all the markings of someone who would work hard, stay focused and no doubt make something of herself.

I also spent a lot of my childhood with inexplicable stomachaches, generalized anxiety that peaked in a series of panic attacks in my 20s, and varying degrees of self loathing. It’s really, really hard for me to delegate. I don’t like unassigned seating or amusement park rides. And I have a difficult time being in a car and not driving.

That’s because there’s a dark side to being an achiever: I’m a control freak. I like to know what will or won’t happen. I try to contain, predict, analyze and understand things more than I possibly can. And I know it’s a losing game. None of us controls how life unfolds. You think you know it, but if you did, you wouldn’t have the expectation and disappointment when you’re reminded again and again that you don’t.

Finding Zen: Easy Ways to Cultivate More Inner Peace

HeartMath, widely recognized for its science-based solutions for stress, as well as a personal wellness technology innovator, explores the scientific meaning behind internal “Zen” and how people can easily reduce stress while increasing internal happiness.

Often, we define peacefulness by the absence of stress — a neutral, inactive, state. However, is peace really just a passive state? For most people, adopting the life of a “Zen master” and dedicating endless hours to meditation simply isn’t an option. Interestingly enough, science is helping to define an active peace state that is achievable with just minutes of daily practice.

Active peace can be described as an increased inner clarity, a feeling of inner calm, and a deeper sense of inner balance. This state of active peace is referred to psychophysiological coherence. Science has shown a correlation between coherence and our ability to think, act, and decision-make. Cultivating coherence, or a deeper internal peace, can actually make us more efficient and more capable of experiencing a meaningful and connected life.

The body responds favorably to the coherence state as well — emotional and mental states are revitalized, and the body’s immune and hormonal balance improves.

I Lost Weight: After ‘Relentless’ Bullying, Liz Taylor Lost 111 Pounds

Name: Liz Taylor
Age: 23
Height: 5’4″
Before Weight: 276 pounds

How I Gained It: I have been overweight most of my life. Growing up I was very active, four-wheeling trail in my backyard, jumping on the trampoline, riding my bike, exploring the woods. But as active as I was, I ate just as much, especially junk food. Cake, ice-cream, chips, candy — I ate it all, and I ate a lot of it. I was lucky enough to have a mother who enjoyed cooking and made homemade biscuits, macaroni and cheese, cakes from scratch, cubed steaks. However, all of this combined was not good for my self-esteem. Up until I was around 12 years old, I never cared about how I looked. My hair was almost always thrown in a ponytail, I wore baggy sweatpants and sweaters and had huge glasses. I was teased periodically for my looks, but it was not until I was a sophomore in high school that it became worse.

Rochelle Harris, British Woman, Has Flesh-Eating Worms Removed From Her Ear

The scratching sound that Rochelle Harris kept hearing was all in her head — literally.

After the British tourist returned from a vacation in Peru earlier this year, she started experiencing headaches, shooting pains down the side of her face and an unexplained discharge from one ear.

Those symptoms, plus the bizarre scratching sounds she continued hearing, prompted Harris to visit a doctor soon after her return to England.

Though doctors at first dismissed the symptoms as nothing more than an ear infection, specialists soon made a startling discovery: Harris’ ear was filled with flesh-eating worms, according to the Daily Mail.

The worms that Harris, 27, was hosting were the larvae of the New World screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax). The fly is a notorious livestock pest that also seeks out pets, zoo animals and occasionally humans as hosts.

Belly Fat Linked With Higher Heart Disease, Cancer Risks

Here’s even more evidence that where fat is located on your body matters when it comes to health risks.

Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Laboratory for Metabolic and Population Health found that people who have high amounts of fat in their abdomens — versus other parts of the body — have higher risks of cancer and heart disease. Researchers noted that abdominal fat is considered an indicator of fat surrounding internal organs.

“Contrary to previously published studies comparing BMI and waist circumference, the presence of abdominal fat improved the ability to predict for cardiovascular disease, supporting the hypothesis that abdominal fat may partially underlie the association of body fat and heart disease and cancer,” study researcher Dr. Caroline S. Fox, M.D., M.P.H., a senior investigator at the NHLBI Laboratory for Metabolic and Population Health, said in a statement.

Ask Healthy Living: Do Mosquitoes ‘Like’ Some People More Than Others?

Do mosquitoes really prefer to bite some people over others? And why?

Several Healthy Living editors consider themselves mosquito delicacies. Could we all be right?

“One in 10 people are highly attractive to mosquitoes,” Jerry Butler, Ph.D., professor emeritus at the University of Florida, told WebMD. Another estimate from the research suggests that 20 percent — or one in five people — are mosquito magnets.

It is definitely true that some people are more attractive to the pesky insects than others, but the reason why remains a bit of a mystery. There are a number of myths out there, including the assertion that mosquitoes prefer blondes. In reality, mosquito preference doesn’t seem to have anything to do with hair color, blood sugar levels, floral perfumes or many of the other factors we’ve heard rumors about.
