Fat Does Not Make You Fat

If you’re feeling completely confused about whether you should cut fat from your diet, you are not alone.  But here’s the bottom line: Fat does not make you fat or sick.

So, why do so many people believe that fat is bad for you and causes heart attacks?  This all started in the Dr. Key’s Seven Countries Study decades ago that examined heart risk based on lifestyle and dietary habits.  He found that in the countries where people ate more fat — especially saturated fat — there were more cases of heart disease, and he concluded that the fat caused the disease.  But here’s the problem with this study: Correlation is not causation.  Just because both fat intake and heart disease were higher among the same population doesn’t mean the heart disease was caused by the fat consumption.  Here’s another way to look at it: Every day, you wake up and the sun comes up, but although these events happen at the same time, you waking up doesn’t cause the sun to come up.  A study that observed this would show a 100 percent correlation between these two events, but it would be wrong to conclude that you caused the sun to rise.

Tryptophan Making You Sleepy Is A Big Fat Lie

It feels like there is a simultaneous conversation happening at Thanksgiving tables across the country. You eat a big meal — which includes a generous helping of turkey — and all of a sudden you’re feeling like you really want to lie down and take a nap.

“It’s the tryptophan,” says Aunt Doris or Grandma Peggy or that cousin who always makes a big point of announcing that she’s watching her weight this year. Everyone nods in agreement, as if the tryptophan is a perfectly reasonable excuse. Unfortunately, the reality is that you just ate way too much.

It’s high time that we set the record straight.

Young Woman Dies From Commotio Cordis After Falling Down On The Beach

A healthy 20-year-old woman was running on a beach with friends when she fell on the wet sand. After briefly standing, she fell again, and within 30 seconds, became unresponsive. Her lips turned blue and she started gasping for breath. Her friends quickly called the paramedics and performed CPR, but it didn’t help, according to a recent report of her case.

She was pronounced dead within half an hour. What happened?

According to the case report, the impact of the woman’s body on the sand when she fell was enough to prompt a rare heart condition called commotio cordis, in which the heart is jolted into an arrhythmic pattern, after which it stops altogether. The report was published online Nov. 1 in the Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine.

How Leaving The Light On All Night Messes With Sleep

Sleeping with the light on could lead to worse Zzs, a small new study suggests.

Reuters first reported on the study, published in the journal Sleep Medicine, which showed that sleeping with the lights on is linked with waking up more often in the middle of the night and having more shallow sleep. Plus, it seems to affect brain oscillations that are linked with sleep depth.

Ten study participants with healthy sleep patterns underwent two sleep sessions where they were monitored using polysomnography. In one of the sessions, they slept with the lights on, and in the other, they slept with the lights off. Reuters reported that the light came from a fluorescent lamp just a few feet away from the participants.

The South Korean researchers found that when the participants slept with the lights on, they had more shallow, stage 1 sleep and less slow-wave sleep, as well as increases in arousal during sleep. There were also changes to brain oscillations, “especially those implicated in sleep depth and stability,” they wrote in the study.

You Won’t Lose Any Weight Unless You Makeover Your Mind First

Everyone knows how to lose weight. All you have to do is eat less and exercise more, right?
WRONG. People who have lost significant amounts of weight know that making a lifestyle change is about so much more than calorie restriction and getting a gym membership. It’s also a massive mental challenge that requires stamina, rational thought and emotional support. In other words, it’s often a mind makeover, first and foremost.

Chocolate-Eating Teens Have Less Total, Abdominal Fat: Study

Go ahead, indulge.

Teens who eat a lot of chocolate tend to have lower levels of total and abdominal fat, according to a new study in the journal Nutrition.

The findings are based on data from 1,458 youths ages 12 to 17, who were part of the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence study, which examines lifestyle habits among youths in nine countries in Europe.

Researchers from the University of Granada found an association between higher consumption of chocolate, and lower levels of total and abdominal fat (as measured through body fat percentage, body mass index and waist circumference).

Plus, the chocolate consumption seemed to hold true independently of other potential factors, such as physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption, saturated fat consumption, sex and energy intake.

90 Percent Of People Show Up To Work Sick

Sick day? What’s that?! Nearly 90 percent of office workers surveyed by Staples this year admitted to showing up on the job even when they knew they were contagious. That’s up from last year’s findings that 80 percent of employees went to work when they were under the weather.

Their reasoning? They don’t want to fall behind. Nearly half — 45 percent — said an ever-growing workload convinced them commuting in was the right decision, according to the survey. It’s not that they don’t know it’s not the healthy decision. Compared to last year, more employees said they understand how long the flu is contagious for, where germs congregate in the office and how long the virus can live on those shared surfaces. Still, sick coworkers are coughing and sneezing — and infecting others — in cubicles all over the country.

In addition to spreading germs, sick workers also aren’t doing the bottom line any favors. If you’re not feeling so hot, you’ll probably be less productive than a typical day at the office anyway, a phenomenon known as presenteeism that ends up costing employers more than if you just took the day off, WebMD reported.

8 Things You Didn’t Know About Your Body Fat

Body fat: It’s soft, it’s squishy and it gets a bad rap. But fat also plays a vital role in keeping our bodies running smoothly. We store extra energy in body fat. It keeps us warm and provides padding for our interior organs. And it secretes chemicals that play a role in appetite and helps regulate menstrual cycles, among other functions.

In other words, in healthy amounts, it’s a wonder organ — but people don’t seem to be very interested in fat except for how to lose it.

Brain’s Waste Removal System More Active During Sleep

Even our brains need to take out the trash.

Researchers from the University or Rochester Medical Center found that a waste-flushing system in the brain, called the glymphatic system, is most active when we sleep — nearly 10 times more so than during periods of wakefulness, in fact.

Plus, during sleep, brain cells shrink in size by 60 percent to better allow for the removal of waste from the brain.

“This study shows that the brain has different functional states when asleep and when awake,” study researcher Maiken Nedergaard, M.D., D.M.Sc., the co-director of the university’s Center for Translational Neuromedicine, said in a statement. “In fact, the restorative nature of sleep appears to be the result of the active clearance of the by-products of neural activity that accumulate during wakefulness.”

The findings, which are published in the journal Science, are based on brain imaging experiments in mice, using technologies such as two-photo microscopy. Researchers found that when the mice were put to sleep, cerebral spinal fluid is ushered through their brains through this waste-removal system, which then moves toxins to the circulatory system and the liver.

8 Habits Of Extremely Well-Rested People

Most of us have probably met (and envied) at least one of those mysterious people who never seem to be tired. We’ve sized them up through bleary eyes, and wondered how it is that they don’t look like they spent 30 minutes battling with the snooze button this morning. The answer isn’t necessarily that they have the luxury of more hours to sleep; instead, many of the most well-rested have some simple habits that help them achieve plenty of high-quality rest.

One thing they often have in common? Discipline. The body likes routine, which allows your natural circadian rhythms to kick in. And while it can be tempting to answer one more email or stay for one last round of drinks, well-rested people prioritize sleep the same way they know to do for diet and exercise. “It’s maintaining a regimented sleep/wake cycle and protecting one’s sleep,” says Michael Decker, Ph.D., a sleep specialist and associate professor at Case Western School of Nursing.
