The streaking ball of fire Friday night above the East Coast did not, for now at least, signal the end to civilization as we know it.Though you might get that sense from social media.
The sky lit up along the U.S. eastern seaboard with reports of “a thin streak of blue-greenish-white” from people like Chip Guy, who was driving in eastern Maryland when he and his family he spotted it.
“It didn’t last more than eight or nine seconds, then it disappeared,” said Guy, a spokesman for Sussex County, Delaware. “Frankly, I didn’t think too much of it.”
But his tune changed once he posted something about the presumed meteor on a local social media web page, which triggered a quick and hearty response.

It’s been said that nothing in this world is certain, except death and taxes. But what if you could freeze your body immediately after death and be revived in the distant future, when medical science has found a cure for your injuries or illness? You’d be able to cheat death (and perhaps your taxes)! Indeed, this is what advocates of the cryonics movement believe–so much so that they are willing to wager a lot of money and their own bodies.
Kim Suozzi was one of those people. She passed away this year, at the tender age of 23, of brain cancer. She chose to have her body frozen in the hopes that one day, she may come back to life.

A teen who stole medication and a cache of weapons and ammunition from his parents’ home in Oklahoma had a history of running away, but authorities still don’t know why he and a friend may have been trying to break into a Texas home where they ultimately died after a botched break-in.
Authorities believe Kenneth Chaffin, 17, ran away from his home in Bethel Acres, Okla., on Monday. A national alert was issued Wednesday morning. That afternoon, Chaffin and friend Dillian King, 18, died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds 250 miles away from Bethel Acres on a remote ranch in Maypearl, Texas, authorities said.

T.J. Lane, who appeared in court Tuesday morning wearing a t-shirt with the word “KILLER” in marker across his chest, will spend the rest of his life in prison for the murder of three teenagers at an Ohio high school.
Going against the recommendation of his counsel, Lane addressed the courtroom before learning his fate. He smiled periodically and showed little remorse for his actions.
“F— all of you,” he said, before raising his middle finger at the victims’ families, according to the Plain Dealer.

The 26-year-old Reuters editor allegedly behind the hacking of the Los Angeles Times website was not a hacker. He said so himself.
“I’m not a hacker,” Matthew Keys allegedly wrote in an online chatroom he shared with members of Anonymous. “I’m an ex-employee.”
Federal prosecutors charged last week that Keys used his access as a former employee of the Tribune Co. to help a hacker deface the website of the Los Angeles Times in 2010. The Tribune Co. owns the paper as well as the Sacramento TV station where Keys had worked until he was fired — two months before the hacking incident.

Did you ever receive a text message from your wife or your boss and wish that it could be read to you in an unsettling British accent by a giant disembodied woman’s head against a stark black background?
Well, friend, that crazy dream of yours might just be closer to reality than you think. Researchers at the University of Cambridge have unveiled their latest progress on Zoe, a “digital talking head which can express human emotions on demand” with “unprecedented realism.” Gizmag pointed out the disembodied head to us.
.

Zoe is a project from Cambridge University, a floating head that can read sentences with matching emotion on her face. One day, the researchers hope that anyone will be able to scan his or her own face into the software. (YouTube: CambridgeUniversity)

The young man tucks his violin under his chin and begins to play. A hush falls over the few spectators in the largely empty opera house, who turn toward the bare stage. As his lilting notes float through the room, other people trickle in from the lobby to listen.
The young man sometimes closes his eyes as he plays, as if lost in the music. If his audience closed their eyes, too, they would never know the violinist standing before them has no right hand, only a stunted appendage with tiny stubs instead of fingers.
Which is fitting, because Adrian Anantawan prefers to be judged for what people hear, not what they see.

Biologists briefly brought the extinct Pyrenean ibex back to life in 2003 by creating a clone from a frozen tissue sample harvested before the goat’s entire population vanished in 2000. The clone survived just seven minutes after birth, but it gave scientists hope that “de-extinction,” once a pipedream, could become a reality.
Ten years later, a group of researchers and conservationists gathered in Washington, D.C., today (March 15) for a forum called TEDxDeExtinction, hosted by the National Geographic Society, to talk about how to revive extinct animals, from the Tasmanian tiger and the saber-toothed tiger to the woolly mammoth and the North American passenger pigeon.

Rapid treatment after HIV infection may be enough to “functionally cure” about a 10th of those diagnosed early, say researchers in France.
They have been analysing 14 people who stopped therapy, but have since shown no signs of the virus resurging.
It follows reports of a baby girl being effectively cured after very early treatment in the US.
However, most people infected with HIV do not find out until the virus has fully infiltrated the body.
