The Dow fell by about 238 points Tuesday, a drop of more than 1%. It was its biggest slide of the year and biggest decline since the election. The broader S&P 500 was also down more than 1%.
Neither index had ended the day with a 1% drop since mid-October. This was their worst day since September.
The Nasdaq, which includes many hot tech stocks such as Apple (AAPL, Tech30), Facebook (FB, Tech30) and Amazon (AMZN, Tech30), fell nearly 2%.
This recent market weakness seems to be a sign that the market tone has shifted to a more negative one, at least temporarily.

The White House said Thursday that Kellyanne Conway, a senior adviser to President Trump, has been “counseled” after she promoted Ivanka Trump’s fashion line in a television interview.
But some thought that didn’t go far enough. In a remarkable rebuke to the White House, a bipartisan letter was sent to the Office of Government Ethics Thursday, to determine whether she should receive a stronger disciplinary response, including suspension, demotion or dismissal.
The letter was authored by Representative Elijah Cummings, a Democrat, and Jason Chaffetz, Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee.
The letter warned, “In this case, there is an additional challenge, which is that the President, as the ultimate disciplinary authority for the White House employees, has an inherent conflict of interest since Conway’s statements relate to his daughter’s private business.”

As Wall Street cheered the Dow hitting 20,000 for the first time in history this week, Donna Coomer just shrugged.
Coomer doesn’t have a cent in the stock market. Sure, she handles a lot of money every day as the manager of a busy Valero gas station in Beattyville, a small town in eastern Kentucky.
But she trusts the bank, not the stock market, with her hard-earned money.
.
“I have a little bit in my checking [account], little bit in my savings,” Coomer, a grandma of three who still works 55 hours a week at the gas station, told CNNMoney.

Whether you’re Snapchatting with friends or catching Pokémon, you probably spend time every day using the creations of mobile app developers. They aren’t necessarily saving the world, but mobile app developers get to create something that can reach millions of people on a daily basis.
That means growing demand for developers who build and update apps so they’re secure, user-friendly, and sought after.
Why it’s great: Mobile app developers are the first to test out the latest phones, tablets, and wearable devices. “If you like playing around with technology and exploring all the possibilities it offers, this can be a really fun job,” says mobile app developer Kyle Craig.

Sears is shutting down 150 more stores, yet another sign of how tough it is for former kings of the retail industry to compete in a world now dominated by Amazon.
Sears(SHLD) said on Thursday that it would close 109 Kmart stores and 41 of its namesake Sears outlets. The announcement came on the same day that Sears disclosed plans to sell its iconic Craftsman tool brand to Stanley Black & Decker (SWK).
The company did not say how many workers would be affected by the store closures.
But a spokesperson said that most of them were part-time workers and that “we are committed to treating these associates with respect and compassion during this process.”

Macy’s said Wednesday it’s shutting down 68 stores and cutting more than 10,000 jobs.
The announcement was issued alongside an unfavorable earnings report, showing comparable store sales dipped 2.1% last quarter. The news caused its stock to plunge nearly 10% during after-hours trading Wednesday.
Macy’s(M) said it expects to layoff about 3,900 workers as a result of the upcoming store closures, and another 6,200 jobs will be cut as the company works to streamline its management team, according to a press release.
A few stores have already been shuttered, but 63 will close down between now and mid-2017, leaving about 660 U.S. stores left open. The closings are among the 100 stores Macy’s said last August that it intends to shutter.

Firms on Wall Street helped bankroll America’s energy boom, financing very expensive drilling projects that ended up flooding the world with oil.
Now that the oil glut has caused prices to crash below $30 a barrel, turmoil is rippling through the energy industry and souring many of those loans. Dozens of oil companies have gone bankrupt and the ones that haven’t are feeling enough financial stress to slash spending and cut tens of thousands of jobs.
Three of America’s biggest banks warned last week that oil prices will continue to create headaches on Wall Street — especially if doomsday scenarios of $20 or even $10 oil play out.

Robotic telepresence remains one of those technologies that is always lingering just on the horizon; it’s going to change everything, the futurists say, just as soon as it gets here. But while several clever telerobotics solutions have come to market in recent years (Vgo and Double Robotics for instance), no solution has yet been both sophisticated and user-friendly enough for the mainstream. These robots — designed to give a remote human operator control of a mobile surrogate robot so that, for instance, a company manager in Chicago can virtually tour a factory floor in Topeka — allow users to move around an environment and interact with people and objects on the other side of the city, country, or planet. But for the most part, telerobots remain high-priced toys.

Long stuck in fourth place, T-Mobile made itself a relevant mobile player in the United States again on Tuesday, with plans to rapidly roll out its 4G LTE network and offer bargain plans with no contracts to entice potential customers.
Oh, and it now offers that quaint little device called the iPhone 5.
