Engineers are battling to save the European Space Agency’s (Esa) flagship Earth observation mission – Envisat.
Controllers say the eight-tonne spacecraft appears to be in a stable condition, but they are not receiving any data at all from it.
Contact was lost with Envisat at the weekend shortly after it downloaded pictures of Spain’s Canary Islands.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — A new kind of global arms race is unfolding — and this one is measured in petaflops.
Titan, the U.S. Department of Energy’s top open science computer, is going live on Monday with an upgrade that will likely make it the fastest supercomputer on the planet. At 20 petaflops — that’s 20 quadrillion calculations each second — Titan outperforms by four petaflops the DOE’s Sequoia supercomputer, which has held the crown since June. The official “Top 500” ranking of the world’s fastest supercomputers will be announced next month.

A white whale which learnt to imitate the voices of humans may have been trying to make contact, scientists believe.
The male named Noc had a distinctly human-like voice, much to the surprise of scientists who previously thought whales typically produce sounds in a manner that is wholly different from humans.

Imagine you had a building material that was energy-efficient, non-toxic and resistant to mold, insects and fire. The material may even have a higher R-value, or thermal resistance, than concrete, a claim that is still being investigated. The only problem? The base of the Hempcrete creation is hemp, which comes from the cannabis sativa plant — the same one that produces marijuana, which is a federally banned substance. Because of this, industrial hemp production is illegal in the United States.

How do you get a rat to laugh? Telling a joke won’t work, but scientists say a rat will laugh when tickled–and they’re not joking.
One of the most cited studies on this interesting animal behavior comes from Dr. Jaak Panksepp, professor of veterinary and comparative anatomy at Washington State University in Pullman.

LAS VEGAS — Former Air Force Col. Charles Halt accused the federal government of a UFO cover-up that involves a secret agency to deal with what might be extraterrestrial visitations.
“I’m firmly convinced there’s an agency, and there is an effort to suppress,” Halt told an audience of 200 people Saturday night at the Smithsonian-affiliated National Atomic Testing Museum.
