The 1980s pop star and model Denise Matthews, known by the stage name Vanity, died Monday at the age of 57. She battled years of kidney failure and a recent abdominal illness, according to TMZ.
Native to Canada, Matthews first found success as a model, but a fateful meeting at the American Music Awards in 1980 would help launch a singing career. Prince recruited the 21-year-old to become the lead singer of the R&B girl group Vanity 6, whose biggest hit was 1982’s “Nasty Girl.” Vanity 6 toured with Prince in ’82 and ’83, before splitting up. Vanity then released two solo albums via Motown Records, 1984’s “Wild Animal” and 1986’s “Skin on Skin.”
Vanity began work on a third solo album that did not come to fruition. She starred in the 1986 B-movie “Never Too Young to Die” and the 1988 action film “Action Jackson,” for which she contributed to the soundtrack. But as Vanity’s music career waned in the late ’80s, she developed a crack-cocaine addiction. As a result, she nearly overdosed in 1994 and suffered near-fatal kidney damage. Matthews then converted to Christianity, abandoned her stage name and became an evangelist.

President Barack Obama on Friday rejected TransCanada’s application to build the Keystone XL pipeline, which would have transported oil across the United States-Canada border.
After seven years of reviewing the project, Obama announced his decision from the Roosevelt Room in the White House.
“The State Department has decided that the Keystone XL pipeline would not serve the national interest of the United States,” he said. “I agree with that decision.”
Tensions over the proposed pipeline had been high for years, with Obama’s environmental base pressuring him to reject the project — citing its impact on emissions — and Republicans in Congress voting repeatedly to force its approval, citing the economic boost it would provide.

A young man starting a new life with the woman he loved was put to rest on what was supposed to be the happiest day of the couple’s lives — their wedding day.
Solomon Chau, 26, of Toronto, Canada, died on Aug. 17 after fighting cancer for eight months, according to his obituary. His funeral was held on Aug. 22, the date he originally planned to marry Jenn Carter. In a bittersweet twist, the couple had a last-minute wedding in April, less than a month after Chau learned his liver cancer had spread, and that he probably wouldn’t be alive on the date that they had originally chosen for the wedding.
“She’s doing OK,” Mike Carter said. “This doesn’t make a lot of sense to her. Being that young — this isn’t supposed to happen to 26-year-old married couples. It’s a little confusing. A bit of a shock, even though we knew it was coming.”

With a blistering attack on the government that extradited him, Marc Emery, the self-proclaimed “Prince of Pot,” returned home to Canada on Tuesday after having served four years in a federal prison in Louisiana for selling marijuana seeds to Americans. Emery, who has started two political parties dedicated to legalizing marijuana in Canada, promised to get right back to work speaking about marijuana policy around the world.
“It’s not about getting high,” Emery told reporters at the airport in Windsor, Ontario, where he suggested that his wife, Jodie, should be elected to Parliament. “It’s about solving a major injustice. Once we get past the legalization part, we’re owed an apology.”

Here’s a”Gas-Saver” for you AMERICA !!
Very interesting. Why would the Conservative Canadian politicians be against a totally fuel efficient car? No oil money to be made? Hmmm…
No mention of the range between charges nor how long to charge the vehicle. I would be interested.
Did you Know that the ZENN car (Zero Emissions No Noise) is made in Quebec .
Cost approx $12,000.
Plug it in like a toaster, and is….. ILLEGAL……to sell in Canada (except in B.C.)

Supplements such as fish oils and the memory-boosting herb gingko biloba do not prevent cognitive decline, according to new research.
But simple mental exercises, such as brain-training games, might help.
A review of clinical studies has found no evidence that herbal supplements, vitamins and even vitamins prevent cognitive decline in healthy older adults.
However the review, conducted by St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada, did find evidence that enjoying a challenging crossword or sudoku may be of benefit.

Until a couple of years ago I didn’t even realise that a freshwater fish could grow this large. But in the Fraser River system, in British Columbia Canada these monsters have been protected since the 1970′s. They were almost fished to extinction back then until the government did a great thing and protected them. There are stories from back in the day about how large they can grow, apparently up to about 18 feet, but the largest one caught recently was 12 feet, near Chilliwack, BC.
They are very long living, and slow growing, so it stands to reason that these fish are only starting to get large again after they were almost killed off in the 70s. The 12 footer was estimated to be about 100 years old, and it weighed over 1100 pounds.

A little long but very beautiful if you have time.
The guy flying the 3 kites is in his 80s, and he’s from Canada. He comes to the Washington State International Kite Festival every year. His skin is like leather as he normally flies with his shirt off. He is deaf, so when he flies we hold our hands up and wave them for applause. He flies 2 with his hands and the 3rd one is attached to his waist. Enjoy!
You must watch to the end to see the amazing landing of that last kite! I would have those kites so tangled up, you could never get them separated again! And of course, make sure the volume is turned up because the music is wonderful and totally reflects the soaring of the kits. Beautiful.

A U.S. and Canadian proposal to protect the Internet from new international regulation has failed to win prompt backing from other countries, setting up potentially tough negotiations to rewrite a telecom treaty.
The idea, also supported by Europe, would limit the International Telecommunication Union’s rules to only telecom operators and not Internet-based companies such as Google Inc and Facebook Inc.

For years now, a steady slew of headlines have warned about the dangers of methamphetamine addiction, with many calling meth (nicknamed “ice,” “crystal,” or “crank”) the most dangerous drug in America.
However, according to new research from Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), when it comes to sheer deadliness, there’s an even bigger threat out there than meth: opioids.
