A 76-year-old man who bludgeoned his wife to death with a garden gnome was sentenced on Friday to four years in jail, BBC News reported.
Frederick Gilliard, of Blackpool, England, told police he “just lost it” when he attacked his wife, Josephine, last year with a gnome and an 8-inch carving knife.
Lancashire Police said in a news release that Gilliard denied the original charge of murder but plead guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

This gang no longer has street cred — because the gang is off the streets.
The Canadian RCMP dismantled the Winnipeg chapter of the Rock Machine motorcycle gang in a raid on Wednesday, the Brandon Sun reports. Police arrested 11 people and seized some 1,800 pills of synthetic ecstasy, cocaine, marijuana, pipe bombs, gang clothing and guns.
The RCMP raided two homes Wednesday morning and arrested the suspects. One of the homes, on Wall Street in Winnipeg, had to be closed for several hours because explosives were found there, the CBC reports.

Search engines have long memories. I think about this whenever I read new coverage of some immoral, misanthropic or illegal act. The kids who tweeted racist statements about Obama on Election Day, the college student whose secret videotaping of his gay roommate helped lead to the young man’s suicide, the catfishing of Manti T’eo. Years from now it’s possible, even likely, that when the perpetrators’ names are Googled, these histories will be what surfaces first for them. An employer, a girlfriend or boyfriend, or a neighbor will find out about what they once did years ago. Whatever the context, their past will be very hard to escape.

Over the years, Mophie has become synonymous with extending the iPhone’s battery life. The outfit’s range of battery-filled iPhone cases has garnered rave reviews across the industry, and even I religiously used one on an iPhone 3G. In more recent days, the company has cautiously expanded into a few new areas — namely, building battery cases for non-Apple phones, and creating the contraption shown above. The Mophie Outride is an action-cam case that’s designed to be strapped onto helmets, automobile hoods and any other place where your average X Games wannabe would look to capture extreme sports footage.

My last day in London was a little bit sad for me. With so many things to see and do in London, I can easily spend months in this city without being bored. I was very productive on my last day as I visited the London Tower in the morning, shopped in Camden Market in the afternoon, and watched the live performance of Les Miserables at night. I’d say I ended my trip with a bang!

Bank regulators got a sense Thursday of how their lives will be slightly different now that Elizabeth Warren sits on a Senate committee overseeing their agencies.
At her first Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee hearing, Warren questioned top regulators from the alphabet soup that is the nation’s financial regulatory structure: the FDIC, SEC, OCC, CFPB, CFTC, Fed and Treasury.
The Democratic senator from Massachusetts had a straightforward question for them: When was the last time you took a Wall Street bank to trial? It was a harder question than it seemed.

NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity has photographed a shiny, metallic-looking object that bears a passing resemblance to a door handle or a hood ornament.
The Curiosity rover has not stumbled onto evidence of an ancient civilization that took the family van to Olympus Mons for vacation, however. The object is simply a rock that the wind has sculpted into an interesting shape, scientists said.

Oakdale police said Tuesday they are still trying to determine why a 34-year-old man apparently began randomly shooting at vehicles, killing a 9-year-old boy and injuring two women.
Police Chief Bill Sullivan said Nhan Lap Tran of Oakdale was arrested Monday after police responded to a report of shots fired in a neighborhood in the St. Paul suburb. Tran was in custody Tuesday on suspicion of second-degree murder and first-degree assault.
Police said Tuesday they are still investigating. Sullivan said it appeared Tran legally owned the handgun used in the attack, and that authorities are not aware of any mental health issues regarding Tran.

The operators of a cruise vessel stranded in the Gulf of Mexico after a weekend engine fire said Monday evening that the craft had drifted so far north of its original position that they now will tow the ship to Mobile, Ala., instead of their original plan for Progreso, Mexico.
Carnival Cruise Lines President and CEO Gerry Cahill said in a statement that strong currents caused the vessel, the Carnival Triumph, to drift about 90 miles north of its original position off the Yucatan Peninsula.
Cahill’s statement says the ship should arrive in Mobile on Thursday and that it will allow for less complicated re-entry for passengers without passports.
