While many may disagree on the whole concept, the “theory of evolution” actually applies in the Tech world, in particular the world of smart phones. Mobiles phones are not just mobile phones any more. They are not the simple bricks that were used for dialing numbers and occasionally sending costly short messages. Mobiles have evolved a lot over the last decade, and the evolution has been a sweet ride. Technology has been very kind to them on all fronts. They are not just boring slabs of bulky plastic, they are beautiful, thin and shiny lusty devices. They don’t have many clunky buttons now, they have capacitive touch screens. Most importantly though, they are not just number dialers, they are fully capable multimedia players, a planner, a portable disk, a GPS device and capable of a plethora of other tasks which were once only the domain of a PC.

Earlier in the week I published some news about a new iPhone 5 battery pack from PowerSkin. Now the Pop’n iPhone 5 battery pack (US$79.99) has arrived for testing, so join me while I take a look at this decidedly different way of keeping your phone powered up.
What makes the PowerSkin PoP’n different from other external battery packs? The suction cups. There are 24 small suction cups that are used to stick the PoP’n onto the back of your iPhone 5 or case.

American Express (Amex) has launched a purchase-by-tweet service for its US-based customers.
Credit-card holders post a specific hashtag on Twitter to trigger payments from their accounts.
Products from Amazon, Sony and Microsoft are being offered at a discount to entice shoppers to use the new service.
However, one retail expert dismissed the initiative as a “gimmick” that was unlikely to catch on.
This is not Amex’s first tie-up with social media.

The world got its first inkling of the quick wit that would make Apple’s Siri an icon during a packed press conference held before an auditorium of tech elite.
“Who are you?” an Apple executive asked the assistant.
“I am a humble personal assistant,” Siri answered to appreciative laughter.
More like humbled personal assistant. That press conference was actually Siri’s second coming-out party. When the virtual assistant first launched in early 2010, it was a standalone iPhone app called Siri created by a 24-person startup with the same name, a company Apple would later acquire.

One of the worst things a writer or an artist faces is the dreaded creative block when you can’t come up with an idea that drives you to draw or write. One tool to help you get past this blank canvas state is The Brainstormer iPad app from Tapnik.
The Brainstormer app is a basic collection of common brain storming lists. The app launches in wheel mode which allows you to spin a wheel and generate a combination of plot/conflict, style/setting and subject/location words. The more adventurous can choose to roll the dice in slot machine mode to get a random mix of words.

That LG would make a wine refrigerator should come as no shock. This is, after all, the same company that made a smartphone-controlled oven. But, as a recently surfaced patent can attest, it appears the Korean electronics giant may have more than cooling soured grapes on its mind. The USPTO filing, which dates back to December of 2009, describes a “mobile terminal” (think: portable kiosk) outfitted with a camera that’s capable of scanning wine labels, matching them to a database and then delivering any relevant data.

Atari’s celebrating 40 years of arcade classic Pong today by releasing … another version of Pong. Pong World is being dubbed “the first-ever official new Pong game on iOS” (despite our search of the App Store dictating the contrary), but more importantly, it’s totally free and it’s already available on the iOS App Store (see gameplay below the break). The iPhone / iPad / iPod Touch game started life as one of many entries in Atari’s “Pong Indie Developer Challenge,” which pitted devs against each other for $50K and lead representation on the big four-zero celebration.
