This isn’t your average science project.
High school student Anya Pogharian volunteers at a hospital dialysis unit where she’s gained experience with the machines that work like kidneys and filter patients’ blood. During her time there, the 17-year-old decided to try to invent a similar machine that would cost less for her senior science project.
According to CBC News, a typical dialysis machine costs 30,000 Canadian dollars (approximately 24,000 American dollars). Anya invented one for 500 Canadian dollars (approximately 400 American dollars) making it cheap enough for a patient to buy and keep at home.

Chameleons may be best known for their amazing color-changing ways, but their tongues may be even more amazing. They shoot out at speeds around 13.4 mph and can reach more than 1.5 times the length of the lizards’ bodies. And when they reach out to snare fast-moving prey, they can accelerate five times faster than a fighter jet.
If you have trouble imagining what all that looks like, you’re in luck. A new video from Earth Unplugged (above) shows the tongue attack of a panther chameleon in glorious slow-motion — and it’s pretty eye-popping.

I am a huge science enthusiast and an unabashed science fiction fan. There are tons of really cool stories out there that fire the imagination and even inspire young people to go into science. (I know they did me.) But I also know the difference between fiction and fact and there is a clear distinction between the two. Fudging that boundary cheapens real science.
If you’re a science geek and internet denizen like me, you’ve encountered a lot of stories over the last few days with titles along the lines of “LHC scientists poised to discover parallel universes.” And that’s just wrong. It completely misrepresents an otherwise reasonable physics article published in the eminently reputable journal Physics Letters B.

Ahoy! Archaeologists excavating pirate Blackbeard’s sunken ship, named Queen Anne’s Revenge, recently unearthed from the wreckage various medical devices–and some of them look pretty darn terrifying.
Among the grisly finds were a urethral syringe that would have been used to treat syphilis, two pumps, and a porringer that would have been used in bloodletting, Live Science reported.
“We just have to understand that these people were suffering,” Dr. Linda Carnes-McNaughton, an archaeologist with the U.S. Department of Defense who volunteered on the excavation, told CNN. “They were seeking relief for any kind of ailment, and certainly if there was warfare on the water, there were wounds among other ailments that needed treatment. It wasn’t always a formally trained person in desperate times. That’s probably more common than we know.”

A new spinal implant, an automated page turner and a more efficient way to make energy from algae. Those are among the projects that young scientists shared with President Barack Obama at the White House Science Fair on Monday.
“I want to thank you for inspiring me,” Obama said in remarks at the science fair. “Keep exploring. Keep dreaming. Keep asking why. Don’t settle for what you already know. Never stop believing in the power of your ideas, your imagination, your hard work to change the world. “
The president gave special notice to a group of 6-year-old Girl Scouts from Tulsa, Oklahoma, the youngest scientists of the day, who built a page-turning device out of Legos to help individuals who are paralyzed or have arthritis. He said the “Supergirls” stressed to him that the device is just a prototype.

The discovery of strange, mineral veins on Mars has planetary scientists buzzing. And no wonder: the find may shed new light on the Red Planet’s watery past and could even help reveal whether Mars was once habitable.
NASA’s Curiosity rover spotted the prominent veins in “Garden City.” That’s the name scientists use for a geologically rich site on towering Mount Sharp (Aeolis Mons), a mountain that rises almost 3.5 miles off the Martian surface.
A composite image of the veins was made by combining 28 separate photos taken on March 18, 2015 by the right-eye camera of the rover’s Mastcam instrument.

We’ve long known that children from affluent families get a head start that can translate into a long-lasting advantage, especially when it comes to academic achievement. Now, scientists have found what may be part of the explanation: Children who grow up in higher-income families appear to have larger brains.

Researchers from nine universities across the country, led by neuroscientists at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Columbia University Medical Center, conducted a major new study of the effects of family income and parental education on child and adolescent brain development.
“We’ve known for a long time that kids from lower-income or disadvantaged families don’t do as well in school and have more difficulties on standardized tests,” Dr. Elizabeth Sowell, director of the Developmental Cognitive Neuroimaging Laboratory at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, told The Huffington Post. “We know that the brain is driving cognition and behavior, so there must be some difference in the brain. This is the largest study to look at things like family income and the size of the brain.”

Thanks to advances in 3-D printing, it’s now possible to whip up everything from pizza to prosthetics to human organs with the push of a button.
Now researchers have created a 3-D printer that works on the atomic scale, assembling complex molecules from scratch. And they say their molecule-making machine could revolutionize the drug-development process and simplify the fabrication of solar cells and other high-tech products.
A drug discovery revolution? “We’re really excited about the immediate impacts that this will have on drug discovery,” Dr. Martin D. Burke, a professor of chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and one of the researchers, says in a video released by the university.

Arctic sea ice this year is the smallest in winter since satellite records began in 1979, in a new sign of long-term climate change, U.S. data showed on Thursday.
The ice floating on the Arctic Ocean around the North Pole reached its maximum annual extent of just 14.54 million square kms (5.61 million sq miles) on Feb. 25 – slightly bigger than Canada – and is now expected to shrink with a spring thaw.
“This year’s maximum ice extent was the lowest in the satellite record, with below-average ice conditions everywhere except in the Labrador Sea and Davis Strait,” the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) said in a statement.
