Scientists identified a new genetic mutation in people that causes type 1 diabetes, opening the door to novel treatments.
An ordinary patient visit recently led Swiss researchers to an extraordinary discovery: a single genetic mutation that causes type 1 diabetes, as reported today in the journal Cell Metabolism. The scientists are now exploring ways to translate their findings into clinical research, including a possible trial with drugs that activate the gene pathway, in the hopes of identifying new type 1 diabetes treatments.
“This is the first time that a single gene was found that directly leads to type 1 diabetes,” says Marc Donath, MD, the study’s senior author and an endocrinologist at University Hospital Basel in Switzerland. “This gene was quite well-known from animal studies and was not expected to lead to this kind of disease.”

A deadly form of skin cancer is able to fend off the body’s immune system, UK researchers have found.
Analysis of tumour and blood samples shows that melanoma knocks out the body’s best immune defence.
A potential test could work out which patients are likely to respond to treatment, the Journal of Clinical Investigation reports.
Cancer Research UK said the body’s response was a “complex puzzle”.
Previous work from the team at King’s College London showed that while patients with melanoma produced antibodies that could attack tumour cells, the immune system often seemed powerless to stop the cancer progressing.

Multiple sclerosis affects more than 2.1 million individuals worldwide. But there is another disease that affects the central nervous system and is far more common.
Central Pain Syndrome is a neurological condition that causes chronic pain in those who suffer from it. Unfortunately, it’s a condition that often goes diagnosed. In recognition of Rare Diseases Day on Thursday, HuffPost Live featured the stories of several individuals whose lives have been impacted by CPS.
.
Louise Mowder is one of the many Americans suffering from the rarely diagnosed Central Pain Syndrome, or CPS.

Some bacteria, including tuberculosis, are able to invade because the body launches the ‘wrong’ immune response, say researchers.
Instead of fighting off tuberculosis, people with a severe infection produce a protein which attacks viruses, the journal Science reports.
About 8.7 million people are infected with tuberculosis every year.
The findings may explain why viruses can make people more susceptible to bacterial infections.
A spring peak in tuberculosis infections may be linked to the effects of viruses circulating in winter, experts suggested.

The activity of hundreds of genes was altered when people’s sleep was cut to less than six hours a day for a week.
Writing in the journal PNAS, the researchers said the results helped explain how poor sleep damaged health.
Heart disease, diabetes, obesity and poor brain function have all been linked to substandard sleep.
What missing hours in bed actually does to alter health, however, is unknown.
So researchers at the University of Surrey analysed the blood of 26 people after they had had plenty of sleep, up to 10 hours each night for a week, and compared the results with samples after a week of fewer than six hours a night.

Rafi Kopelan is a typical 5-year-old. She’s mastered Candyland. She’s learning to read. Given a choice, she’d spend hours on the swings at the playground.
But unlike her classmates, Rafi’s body is covered in blisters from her scalp to her feet. Her corneas are scratched. Her toes are fused together. And her esophagus is lined with so much scar tissue that she can barely swallow.
That’s because Rafi was born with a rare connective tissue disorder called epidermolysis bullosa (EB). The genetic disease causes her skin to break down in response to the slightest friction. Even minor contact — the scratch of a fingernail, the tag on the back of her shirt — causes her skin to tear or to erupt in blisters, leaving 75% of her body covered in painful, open lesions.

A Mediterranean diet enhanced with extra-virgin olive oil or extra servings of nuts lowered the risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular events in people, study finds.
All roads lead to Rome when eating for heart health, a major study has found — or at least they point to the advantages of the Mediterranean diet for those at high risk for heart disease.
Researchers in Spain found that the Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts reduced incident of major cardiovascular events, according to a study published online today in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Using low-dose computed tomography (CT scans) rather than standard chest X-rays to detect lung cancer could prevent approximately 12,000 U.S. lung cancer deaths each year, according to a new study.
While cancer death rates have declined in the United States over the last few decades, lung cancer remains the top killer among all forms of the disease for both men and women. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that in 2013, there will be 228,190 new cases of lung cancer and 159,480 lung cancer deaths in the United States.

High-intensity interval workouts have long been praised for their weight-loss benefit, but when it comes to overall health, simply moving for longer periods of time every day might be best, researchers from Masstricht University say. Their findings are published in the journal PLOS ONE.
When normal-weight participants burned a similar amount of calories through either short, intense workouts or longer periods of standing and walking, the group that stood and walked more had improved cholesterol levels and insulin response compared to the vigorous exercisers. This effect wasn’t easy to come by, however: The group that completed longer periods of low-intensity exercise substituted six hours of sitting with four hours of walking and two hours of standing every day.

How I Gained It: Two back-to-back pregnancies, postpartum depression and binge eating to cope with my feelings. Every day was a struggle for me. I could barely keep up with my boys. I was always tired, out of breath and absolutely miserable. I was ashamed and embarrassed and dodged as many family photos as I could.
Breaking Point: My son Caleb took off running from me at the mall. I was so big that I could not catch up to him. I will never forget the panic mixed with that burning sensation in my throat. That was it. I made up my mind to do something about my weight because I had let myself get out of control long enough.
