Name: Liz Taylor
Age: 23
Height: 5’4″
Before Weight: 276 pounds
How I Gained It: I have been overweight most of my life. Growing up I was very active, four-wheeling trail in my backyard, jumping on the trampoline, riding my bike, exploring the woods. But as active as I was, I ate just as much, especially junk food. Cake, ice-cream, chips, candy — I ate it all, and I ate a lot of it. I was lucky enough to have a mother who enjoyed cooking and made homemade biscuits, macaroni and cheese, cakes from scratch, cubed steaks. However, all of this combined was not good for my self-esteem. Up until I was around 12 years old, I never cared about how I looked. My hair was almost always thrown in a ponytail, I wore baggy sweatpants and sweaters and had huge glasses. I was teased periodically for my looks, but it was not until I was a sophomore in high school that it became worse.

Kerry Harvey, 23, developed pains in her abdomen in December last year
-
She visited doctors repeatedly as pain worsened and she was given diagnoses ranging from a suspected miscarriage to stomach ulcers
-
In March she was rushed to hospital where a scan revealed she was suffering with cancer so advanced doctors didn’t know where it originated
-
In April she was diagnosed with pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer, the same type that Apple founder Steve Jobs suffered from
-
Disease has spread to her liver and bones and doctors say it is incurable
-
She is now undergoing palliative chemotherapy and doing well – her bones are cancer-free and the tumour on her pancreas has shrunk
A young woman who was told by doctors that her crippling stomach pains were probably heartburn or a stomach ulcer is now battling advanced pancreatic cancer.
When Kerry Harvey, 23, from Chichester, West Sussex, was eventually diagnosed with stage four cancer, it had spread to her liver and bones and doctors said there was little they could do for her.
But to everyone’s relief, she is responding well to palliative treatment. Her latest scan revealed the tumour on her pancreas has shrunk, that her liver has become less cancerous and that the cancer has entirely retreated from her bones.

The scratching sound that Rochelle Harris kept hearing was all in her head — literally.
After the British tourist returned from a vacation in Peru earlier this year, she started experiencing headaches, shooting pains down the side of her face and an unexplained discharge from one ear.
Those symptoms, plus the bizarre scratching sounds she continued hearing, prompted Harris to visit a doctor soon after her return to England.
Though doctors at first dismissed the symptoms as nothing more than an ear infection, specialists soon made a startling discovery: Harris’ ear was filled with flesh-eating worms, according to the Daily Mail.
The worms that Harris, 27, was hosting were the larvae of the New World screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax). The fly is a notorious livestock pest that also seeks out pets, zoo animals and occasionally humans as hosts.

Here’s even more evidence that where fat is located on your body matters when it comes to health risks.
Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Laboratory for Metabolic and Population Health found that people who have high amounts of fat in their abdomens — versus other parts of the body — have higher risks of cancer and heart disease. Researchers noted that abdominal fat is considered an indicator of fat surrounding internal organs.
“Contrary to previously published studies comparing BMI and waist circumference, the presence of abdominal fat improved the ability to predict for cardiovascular disease, supporting the hypothesis that abdominal fat may partially underlie the association of body fat and heart disease and cancer,” study researcher Dr. Caroline S. Fox, M.D., M.P.H., a senior investigator at the NHLBI Laboratory for Metabolic and Population Health, said in a statement.

There is nothing like a biblical plague landing on your face to make you question the importance of importance of physical appearance. I was 24 years old when I noticed a massive knot on my face that caused my left eye to close slightly. I was sure that something horrible had bitten me and was equally sure that some topical cream and an antibiotic would cure it. But when my normally personality-less dermatologist sat down beside me, put his hand on my arm and said, “You are so young and pretty. I am so sorry,” I knew I was wrong on both counts.
At the time the plague descended, I was a trainer for a mid-sized bank, which called for me to present in front of people on a regular basis. I was also getting married soon… that special time in a girl’s life when you prepare for that walk down the runway that church folks call an aisle.

Tiny functioning human livers have been grown from stem cells in the laboratory by scientists in Japan.
They said they were “gobsmacked” when liver buds, the earliest stage of the organ’s development, formed spontaneously.
The team, reporting their findings in Nature, hope that transplanting thousands of liver buds could reverse liver failure.
Experts welcomed the findings, describing them as “exciting”.
Scientists around the world are trying to grow organs in the lab to overcome a shortage of organ donors.
Some patients already have bladders made from their own cells, but dense solid organs such as the liver and kidneys are much harder to produce.

Would you recognize these symptoms of stroke in women? From hiccups to weakness, learn the signs.
Having the hiccups isn’t such a big deal — unless your hiccups are accompanied by other strange symptoms, such as the inability to move an entire side of your body or make your mouth form the words you want to say. You may not know that all these symptoms together can signal stroke in women.
More than 425,000 women will suffer a stroke this year, compared to 375,000 men. Twice as many women die each year from strokes compared to breast cancer. So why aren’t more women aware of the signs of stroke? Time to get educated.
Symptoms of Stroke: Women vs. Men
It’s difficult to predict the signs of stroke in women or in men, says Carolyn Brockington, MD, assistant clinical professor of neurology and director of the Stroke Center at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital’s Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in New York City. More than any differences between the genders, the unpredictability comes from never knowing what part of the brain will be hit, she explains. Stroke occurs when blood supply is cut off to a portion of the brain, either by a blood clot (ischemic stroke) or by sudden bleeding in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke). The symptoms caused by the stroke will depend on where in the brain the stroke occurs.
