The Davis-Schrimpf seep field is located about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southeast of Palm Springs, Calif., at an elevation of 230 feet (70 meters) below sea level. Here, carbon dioxide gases gurgle to the surface as a result of a magma zone found 1 mile (1.6 km) below the Earth’s surface cooking the gas from carbonate minerals.
Over 50 mud volcanic features are found in this seep field, including gryphons, gas vents, salses, mudpots, and springs all located within a 2-square-mile (5-square-km) area.
Gryphons are small earthen mounds built by the eruptions of mud volcanoes. The fluids that create the gryphons are powered by hydrothermal carbon dioxide gas mixed with near-surface brines and are merely warm to the touch rather than hot.
The viscosity of the mud extruding from a specific mud volcanic vent will help determine the height that each gryphon grows to. The amount of escaping carbon dioxide gas also influences the erupting power of the mixture and thus how high the small mountain of mud will grow.

A new island emerged from the ocean offshore of the city of Gwadar, Pakistan, after a strong magnitude-7.7 earthquake shook the country on Sept. 24.
The mound appears to be 20 to 40 feet (6 to 12 meters) high and 100 feet (30 m) wide, DIG Gwadar Moazzam Jah, a district police officer, told Pakistan’s Geo News. It rose out of the sea at a spot located about 350 feet (100 m) from the coast, he said.
The news sparked lively chatter among geologists, who debated whether the hill was a landslide, a fault scarp or even a hoax. A fault scarp marks vertical displacement along a fault, anything from a small step to a huge, steep cliff.
Scientists are still far from consensus, but many think that Pakistan’s newest piece of land may be a mud volcano.
Geologist Bob Yeats, an expert on Pakistan’s earthquake hazards, said he’s waiting until he hears from his colleagues in Pakistan (it’s currently night there) before judging the case. The two most likely possibilities are a landslide or a mud volcano, Yeats told LiveScience’s OurAmazingPlanet.

On September 26, 2013, NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured this image of a new island off the coast of Pakistan. The “mud island” rose from the seafloor near Gwadar on September 24, shortly after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake rattled the Balochistan province of northwestern Pakistan.

In rare cases, one of life’s important childhood lessons — always chew your food properly — becomes fossilized. And now, anyone can own one of these reminders in rock. A specimen containing the remains of a large, predatory amphibian choking on another creature is up for auction in October.
Nearly 300 million years ago, during the Paleozoic Era, this predator attempted to eat another, smaller amphibian. The larger creature died mid-meal with the smaller one’s body half-consumed. This type of fossil, in which a predator chokes on its prey, is known as an aspiration.
When a scene like this is captured forever by geology, the value of the fossil goes up, said Jim Walker, director of the nature and science department at the auction house Heritage Auctions. [See Photos of ‘Choking Predators’ and other Fossils for Auction]
“It affects it to the degree of eight or 10 times without any trouble at all,” Walker said. Heritage expects this specimen to sell for between $150,000 and $250,000.
The predator, in this case, is a 28-inch-long (71 centimeters) creature known as Sclerocephalus haeuseri. Artists’ representations of it depict an animal that looks like a cross between an alligator and a salamander, with a heavy skull and jaws, a streamlined body with a menacing-looking tail, and eyes on top of its head.
The resemblance to a crocodile or alligator is no coincidence. During the Permian Period — the last period of the Paleozoic lasting from 299 million to 251 million years ago — this ancient amphibian filled a similar ecological role to these modern aquatic predators, Walker said.

Logan is a city in Hocking County, Ohio. The population was 7,152 at the time of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hocking County. Logan is located in southeast Ohio, on the Hocking River 48 miles southeast of Columbus. The current mayor of Logan is Republican Greg Fraunfelter, who began a four-year term in January 2016 and was re-elected in 2019.
Logan is the county seat of Hocking County, Ohio. Residents named the town in honor of Chief Logan of the Mingo Indian tribe. He and his band lived in this area at the time of European-American settlement. Ohio Governor Thomas Worthington established the community in 1816.
Logan was incorporated as a city in 1839.
Logan was the first city in the state of Ohio to install a double roundabout. Located at the interchange of Ohio State Route 664 and U.S. Route 33, the roundabouts were officially opened to traffic on December 4, 2013.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.93 square miles (12.77 km2), of which 4.79 square miles (12.41 km2) is land and 0.14 square miles (0.36 km2) is water.
As of the census of 2010, there were 7,152 people, 2,982 households, and 1,831 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,493.1 inhabitants per square mile (576.5/km2). There were 3,374 housing units at an average density of 704.4 per square mile (272.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.5% White, 0.8% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Just two decades after discovering the first world beyond our solar system, astronomers are closing in on alien planet No. 1,000.
Four of the five main databases that catalog the discoveries of exoplanets now list more than 900 confirmed alien worlds, and two of them peg the tally at 986 as of Sept. 26. So the 1,000th exoplanet may be announced in a matter of days or weeks, depending on which list you prefer.
That’s a lot of progress since 1992, when researchers detected two planets orbiting a rotating neutron star, or pulsar, about 1,000 light-years from Earth. Confirmation of the first alien world circling a “normal” star like our sun did not come until 1995. [The Strangest Alien Planets (Gallery)]
And the discoveries will keep pouring in, as astronomers continue to hone their techniques and sift through the data returned by instruments on the ground and in space.
The biggest numbers in the near future should come from NASA’s Kepler space telescope, which racked up many finds before being hobbled in May of this year when the second of its four orientation-maintaining reaction wheels failed.
Kepler has identified 3,588 planet candidates to date. Just 151 of these worlds have been confirmed so far, but mission scientists have said they expect at least 90 percent will end up being the real deal.

At the start of December, the Tor Project’s support email inbox began receiving an unusual number of messages from users saying they were encountering problems accessing the digital anonymity service. “It was not just one or two, but like 10 people asking,” says Gustavo Gus, community team lead of the Tor Project. At the same time, staff at the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI), which measures and tracks internet censorship, saw indications that suggested Russian internet service providers (ISPs) were blocking the Tor network.

For more than a year now, one of the biggest stories in tech has been Apple’s push to require developers to request permission from users before tracking their activity. The change has serious implications for advertisers that use that data to “personalize” ads based on what they think is relevant.
Facebook has been one of the loudest voices against Apple’s initiative, known as App Tracking Transparency, even taking out full-page ads in major newspapers claiming that Apple is hurting small businesses and threatening the “free and open internet.”
The other side of the story is the effort developers and digital advertisers have put into trying to get users to allow their data to be collected. Apple allows apps to request permission to track a user’s activity and apps are allowed to collect first-party data or data about how a user interacts with a developer’s own sites.
For example, Facebook can still track you across Instagram, since both are owned by Meta, which is the name the company gave itself because it realized that Facebook might be a bit of a tarnished brand. But, if it wants to track what you do online, it has to ask.
