Last week, Mott Hall Bridges Academy principal Nydia Lopez took the stage in front of her 195 students and made an announcement: a school fundraiser to send the Brooklyn middle schoolers on a trip to Harvard had not only met its $100,000 goal, but had miraculously raised more than $700,000.
That number, as of Tuesday afternoon, had jumped to $1,179,873.
“The scholars of MHBA are inspiring the entire world,” Lopez said during a recent school assembly. “People have written me letters from New Zealand, England and South Africa, telling me that they care about you.”

Take a look at these old cars in Cuba that are still on the road.
No apparent rust with all the salt water too…..
This is the first thing you notice when you get off the plane in Havana. It is surprising how well maintained these old cars are since Cubans have not been able to get any kind of parts for them from the USA. A step back in time for sure.

After the first six weeks of the 2014-2015 basketball season I picked out a five “Players to Watch,” a pre-region basketball team for the 2014-2015 season.
Who are the top five basketball players that shined the brightest during the first third of the 2014-2015 basketball season?
This week it’s the ladies, and on Jan. 21, it will be the guys’ turn. Five boys and five girls between Berkeley, Timberland, Cross and St. John’s.
Ladies first.

Lassana Bathily, a Muslim employee at Paris Kosher grocery store Hyper Cacher, saved several people by hiding them in a walk-in freezer when a gunman laid siege to his workplace on Friday.
Amedy Coulibaly burst into the market and opened fire, killing 4 people. He took several shoppers hostage and threatened to kill them if police stormed the printing shop where Cherif and Said Kouachi, who killed 12 people in an attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo earlier in the week, were holed up in a village to the north.
Bathily, identified by French media as a “Malian Muslim,” helped several customers to safety as the chaos unfolded. “I went down to the freezer, I opened the door, there were several people who went in with me. I turned off the light and the freezer,” Bathily, 24, told French network BFMTV. “I brought them inside and I told them to stay calm here, I’m going to go out. When they got out, they thanked me.”

The leader of the Lebanese Hezbollah group says Islamic extremists have insulted Islam and the Prophet Muhammad more than those who published satirical cartoons mocking the religion.
Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah did not directly mention the Paris attack on the offices of Charlie Hebdo that left 12 people dead, but he said Islamic extremists who behead and slaughter people — a reference to the IS group’s rampages in Iraq and Syria — have done more harm to Islam than anyone else in history.
Nasrallah spoke Friday via video link to supporters gathered in southern Beirut.

This dog with a dark past is now looking toward a bright future.
Earlier this month, Second Chance Rescue in New York City received a plea for help from a shelter in Georgia regarding a pit-bull mix, who has since been named Landis. The canine was emaciated with several serious medical problems.
“The tendons in all 4 legs are ruptured due to his prior living conditions. He is very small and underweight,” Jacquelyn O’Sullivan of Second Chance Rescue told the Huffington Post in an e-mail. “His body condition tell us that he lived in a small space, hence his dwarf-like appearance, bent legs and curved spine.

Revelers converged on the beaches of Brazil, the skyscrapers of Dubai and New York’s Times Square to say good riddance to a turbulent 2014 marred by terror woes, Ebola outbreaks and a horrific series of airline disasters.
But tragedy struck in Shanghai, Baghdad was on edge and protesters in the United States planned a sobering reminder of one of the year’s biggest stories.

Most corporate offices don’t condone drinking on the job, but a case may be made for reconsideration. As it turns out, a little bit of alcohol really can support creative thinking.
Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago found that a certain level of inebriation can help get the creative juices flowing. In the study, participants whose blood alcohol level (BAC) was slightly under .08 percent performed better in a creative task than did their sober counterparts. (The intoxicated group, however, underperformed when they were assigned memory tasks.) The researchers determined that a person’s “creative peak” is reached when the person hits a BAC of .075 percent.
