Authorities arrested an Indiana doctor Monday on suspicion of carrying out two attacks in Omaha over the past five years in which four people were killed who had ties to a local university medical school that fired him in 2001.
Dr. Anthony Garcia, who now lives in Terre Haute, Ind., was arrested by Illinois State Police during a traffic stop Monday in Union County, which is in the south of the state near Illinois’ borders with Indiana and Missouri, Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said. Officers said he appeared to be intoxicated when they arrested him that he had a .45-caliber handgun with him.
Garcia, 40, was being held in Illinois on suspicion of four counts of first-degree murder and four counts of using a weapon to commit a felony, Schmaderer said. An Illinois State Police official declined to discuss details of Garcia’s arrest or detention, and said any questions should go to Omaha police.

Robert Vann Marshall was shot and killed by his wife as he was allegedly breaking an order of protection between them.
A Tennessee man was shot and killed by his wife less than 15 minutes after he was released from jail.
Robert Vann Marshall, 34, allegedly broke an order of protection Saturday barring him from going anywhere near his wife. Earlier that day, he was thrown in the slammer and given the order because he allegedly threatened to kill his wife and children, WBIR reported.
At 1:27 p.m., he was released from jail. At 1:38 p.m., officers received a call from Marshall’s wife at their McMinn County home, during which she claimed her husband was forcing his way inside the home. Police said he was irate, suicidal and possibly armed.
“His wife called 911 and was telling our dispatchers that he was trying to break into the residence,” McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy told WRCB. “She retreated into the back bedroom, and at some point fired a shot and he was killed.”

After deliberating for more than 16 hours, a jury of six women on Saturday evening found George Zimmerman not guilty in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old in Sanford, Fla.
Zimmerman had pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder with an affirmative defense, claiming he had shot Martin to save his own life after being attacked by the teen on Feb. 26, 2012. The trial, televised nationally on cable networks and streamed live across the Internet on various sites, kept the country captivated awaiting a verdict on the tragic events that took place that rainy night.

If you paid a bribe sometime in the last year, you are not alone. According to a new survey by corruption watchdog Transparency International, more than a quarter of people worldwide paid a bribe when dealing with public services in the past 12 months.
Transparency International’s 2013 Global Corruption Barometer is based on interviews with 114,270 people in 107 countries. It uses a public opinion survey to estimate the prevalence of corruption across national institutions worldwide.
The report concludes that although bribery is a global problem, it is not an equally distributed one.
According to the report, less than 5 percent of respondents in 16 countries admitted to giving bribes, while more than half of the people surveyed in 14 other countries reported paying off officials. Of those 14 countries, 11 are located in Africa. They include post-Gaddafi Libya, where 62 percent of respondents reported having paid up, and Liberia, where an astonishing 75 percent slipped money to officials. In Kenya, where legislators recently tried to raise their salary to 84 times that of the average Kenyan, 70 percent of those surveyed reported giving bribes.

The military’s highest court overturned a murder conviction Wednesday against a Camp Pendleton Marine in one of the most significant cases against American troops from the Iraq war.
The Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces threw out the conviction of Sgt. Lawrence Hutchins III of Plymouth, Mass., who has served about half of his 11-year sentence.
According to the ruling posted on the court’s website, the judges agreed with Hutchins, who claimed his constitutional rights were violated when he was held in solitary confinement without access to a lawyer for seven days during his 2006 interrogation in Iraq.
The decision is seen as a major blow to the military’s prosecution of Iraqi war crimes.
Hutchins led an eight-man squad accused of kidnapping an Iraqi man from his home in April 2006, marching him to a ditch and shooting him to death in the village of Hamdania.

British police say they have launched a full investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, and want to trace 38 “persons of interest” in the case.
Detectives say it’s possible that Madeleine, who vanished from a Portuguese holiday resort six years ago, is still alive.
Scotland Yard said Thursday that 12 of the individuals of interest are British, and the rest from a variety of European countries. The force says it is working with governments across the continent to find out more.
McCann vanished from a vacation home in Portugal’s Algarve region on May 3, 2007, days before her fourth birthday. The case has generated intense media interest.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood said police “continue to believe that there is a possibility that Madeleine is alive.”

A 43-year-old house painter so badly brain damaged that he can’t speak has been awarded $58 million by a jury after a beating at a bar left him with half his skull permanently bashed in.
Antonio Lopez Chaj (chy) appeared at a news conference Monday with lawyers who announced the award handed down against a security company Friday in Torrance Superior Court.
It was among the largest damage awards ever given to one person in California, the lawyers said. They said they expect an appeal and there could be settlement negotiations before Chaj receives anything.
Chaj had to be supported by relatives at the news conference. When he took off a baseball cap hiding his injuries, gasps could be heard from people present.
“His skull is like a pie with 25 percent cut out of it,” said attorney Federico Sayre.
Chaj was attacked at a mid-Wilshire bar after trying to intercede in an attack by a bartender and security guard on two relatives who were with him.
Lawyers said an unlicensed, untrained security guard beat Chaj with a baton, kicked him in the head eight times and smashed his skull against pavement four times.

A Philadelphia man charged with putting heroin and methadone in his infant son’s bottle to quiet him, but instead killing him, was convicted Tuesday of third-degree murder.
Orlando Rosado, 46, did not testify at the one-day trial, but the defense said Rosado accidentally put the drugs in the baby’s 3 a.m. bottle during a heroin relapse. His son, Christopher, died two days shy of his first birthday in May 2012.
Common Pleas Judge Barbara McDermott said she based her verdict in the nonjury trial partly on Rosado’s conduct afterward, when he gave changing statements to police, including an attempt to blame the death on his 5-year-old daughter.
“I was appalled when I heard that,” McDermott said.
Yet McDermott says she knows Rosado regrets his actions. He told police his son was “his heart and soul.”

A man apparently committed suicide just moments after he was convicted of sodomizing a 14-year-old girl.
A coroner’s report and witness accounts indicate that Steve Parsons, 48, of Maryville, Mo., swallowed a cyanide pill inside the courtroom on Thursday just after a jury pronounced him guilty of statutory sodomy, according to KCTV. Minutes later, he was “convulsing” and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
“It’s not common to see someone just fall over dead in the courtroom even though they’ve just been found guilty of a crime,” Sheriff Darrin White, who was in the courtroom when the verdict was read, told Fox4KC.
Parsons placed an overnight delivery of cyanide on June 25, authorities told the St Joseph Post.

Police in Florida say a man fatally shot an innocent motorist who he mistook for someone he fought with earlier outside a nearby strip club.
Jerome Edward Hayes, 48, turned himself over to authorities Monday in connection to the shooting death of Fred William Turner, WPTV reports.
Investigators initially believed Turner, 47, was the victim of road rage when he was found dead on the side of Interstate-4 around 3 p.m. Saturday.
Police said that Turner called 911 to report that he was being followed and felt threatened.
“While on the phone the victim stated that the vehicle following him had earlier pulled up next to his vehicle and someone displayed what appeared to be a semi automatic weapon to him,” the Hillsborough County Sheriff said. “The victim stated that he had done nothing to cause someone to follow him.”
