Most people remember that the Arab Spring started with a guy who lit himself on fire. What they don’t remember is that he did it as a protest against corruption: Mohamed Bouazizi, a Tunisian fruit vendor, decided he’d been shaken down by police officers one too many times.

Bouazizi’s death set in motion the biggest political upheaval of the 21st century. The Arab Spring was “mostly about corruption,” said FBI Special Agent George McEachern, one of the leading investigators of global graft. “Corruption leads to failed states, which leads to terrorism.”

That’s what makes the corruption revealed in a new trove of confidential emails from a mysterious Monaco-based company called Unaoil so significant.

On Wednesday, The Huffington Post and its Australian partner, Fairfax Media — led by reporters Richard Baker and Nick McKenzie — published the results of a months-long investigation of Unaoil, an obscure firm that helps big multinational corporations win contracts in areas of the world where corruption is common.

Nine officials of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), including two of its current vice presidents, were among 14 people indicted on Wednesday for racketeering conspiracy and corruption, the Department of Justice announced in a statement.

In addition to FIFA officials, a number of officials of other soccer governing bodies were named in the 47-count indictment for “racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies, among other offenses, in connection with the defendants’ participation in a 24-year scheme to enrich themselves through the corruption of international soccer.”

The arrests come days ahead of Friday’s FIFA presidential elections, which will still go ahead. Current FIFA president, Sepp Blatter was not among those arrested and is expected to win his fifth term, The Independent reported.

If you paid a bribe sometime in the last year, you are not alone. According to a new survey by corruption watchdog Transparency International, more than a quarter of people worldwide paid a bribe when dealing with public services in the past 12 months.

Transparency International’s 2013 Global Corruption Barometer is based on interviews with 114,270 people in 107 countries. It uses a public opinion survey to estimate the prevalence of corruption across national institutions worldwide.

The report concludes that although bribery is a global problem, it is not an equally distributed one.

According to the report, less than 5 percent of respondents in 16 countries admitted to giving bribes, while more than half of the people surveyed in 14 other countries reported paying off officials. Of those 14 countries, 11 are located in Africa. They include post-Gaddafi Libya, where 62 percent of respondents reported having paid up, and Liberia, where an astonishing 75 percent slipped money to officials. In Kenya, where legislators recently tried to raise their salary to 84 times that of the average Kenyan, 70 percent of those surveyed reported giving bribes.
