Authorities say they’ve linked a sixth killing to a former photographer facing a possible death sentence for the murders of four Northern California women.
Prosecutors say new evidence ties 79-year-old Joseph Naso to the killing of Sharileea Patton, whose body was found in Marin County in 1981.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports the 56-year-old Patton was in the San Francisco Bay Area looking for work when her strangled body was found stuffed into two garbage bags.
Naso was convicted earlier this year of killing four women in the 1970s and 1990s. All four had alliterative names: Roxene Roggasch, Carmen Colon, Pamela Parsons and Tracy Tafoya.
Naso also is the suspect in a fifth killing in Nevada County in 1992.

A man convicted of imprisoning a 10-year-old girl for 17 days in a suburban New York dungeon was found dead in his cell, and she expressed sympathy for his family but not for him.
John Esposito was found unresponsive at a prison in Ossining, N.Y., on Wednesday, said spokeswoman Linda Foglia. The death is under investigation but does not appear to be suspicious, she said.
Esposito, 64, was serving 15 years to life for kidnapping Katie Beers and hiding her under his Bay Shore, Long Island, home in 1992.
Beers is now a married mother of two who earned a degree in business management and works in insurance sales near her home in rural Pennsylvania. She also has been making public appearances in recent months to speak about her ordeal.
She told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that state parole officials called her on Wednesday with the news of his passing. “They wanted me to hear it from them and not in the media, and that is something I definitely appreciated,” Beers said.

Convicted kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro was found dead on Tuesday evening, 19 Action News reported. He was 53.
On Aug. 1, Castro was sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison for kidnapping and raping Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus, and holding them captive in his Cleveland home for more than a decade.
He pleaded guilty to 937 counts, including murder and kidnapping, in exchange for the death penalty being taken off the table, CNN reported.
During the sentencing, Castro denied being abusive and insisted that most of the sex was consensual.
‘I’m not a violent person,” Castro said. “I simply kept them there without them being able to leave.”

Investigators believe a serial rapist has attacked at least eight women in one Dallas neighborhood since June, including six in the past two weeks, police said Wednesday.
The latest victim came forward Wednesday to report she was attacked on Aug. 28 in the same area, which is near downtown Dallas and next to the southeastern edge of Fair Park, where the state fair will open later this month.
In addition to their location, the attacks share several similarities, police said in a statement. The assailant in each was a black man in his mid-20s to early 30s who was armed with a handgun. He wore shorts and a T-shirt, masked his face using various types of cloth and in some cases, had on prescription glasses. The attacker approached his victims, forced them to secluded areas nearby, and then robbed and sexually assaulted them.

A Mississippi teen has been charged with murder in the death of his father — and authorities say he had a love affair with a cop who helped him carry out the dirty deed.
The officer, 25-year-old Jasper Pittman, was fired from the force for his role in the killing and faces sexual battery charges for an alleged relationship with the boy, 14-year-old Blake Thompson. The pair was arrested along with two other suspects — Greg Antonio Fortenberry, 26, and LeJerrious Perkins, 17 — after police found the body of Kenneth Thompson, 53, buried in a shallow grave in woods behind Pittman’s house late Sunday.
The boy’s aunt, Lillian Mallard, told the Clarion Ledger that she knew about the relationship between the teenager and the officer, and that the young man had recently run away from home. She told the newspaper that Kenneth Thompson had gone out to look for his son early Sunday, but did not return.
.
Suspect Blake Thompson, 14, will be tried as an adult in his father’s murder.

A note scrawled by a prison guard minutes before her death was the clue that led to her killer, Orange County prosecutors said at the trial of her husband, who is charged with arranging the killing.
Elizabeth Begaren scribbled down the license plate number of a car that followed her onto an Anaheim freeway on-ramp in 1998, jurors were told Wednesday during opening statements in Superior Court.
Her husband, Nuzzio Begaren, was driving the family sport utility vehicle. He pulled over and a gang member got out of the other car and shot her, prosecutors contended.
Police found a torn-up piece of paper in the dirt by the side of the freeway and reassembled it. On it, Elizabeth Begaren had scribbled the words “light blue” and the plate number, prosecutor Larry Yellin said.
That led investigators to a Buick Regal driven by gang member Guillermo Espinoza, authorities said.
.
Nuzzio Bergaren is charged with arranging the killing of his wife, Elizabeth.

The white yacht seized in Vanuatu had a secret under its worn parquet floor: brick after brick of South American cocaine. The find U.S. and Australian officials announced Friday was part of a collaboration with South Pacific governments to investigate smugglers’ use of yachts to move drugs across the ocean to Australia.
The 750 kilograms (1,650 pounds) of cocaine were found Monday in the capital, Port Vila, with the assistance of Vanuatu police, Australian Customs and Border Protection Service said in a statement.
Agents chiseled into the boat interior to expose the drugs in the yacht’s engine compartment. Video authorities released of the seizure showed dozens of bricks wrapped in dirty black plastic.
They estimated the drugs were worth 370 million Australian dollars ($330 million).
No arrests have yet been made. U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Senior Attache David Cali said the investigation was ongoing, and he praised the joint operation in a statement.
“Organized crime syndicates should know that we are prepared, willing and able to combine our skills, resources and efforts to target them,” he said.

A 2-year-old Michigan boy is struggling to survive after allegedly suffering a severe beating from his mother’s boyfriend.
Damian Sutton is in critical condition at Children’s Hospital in Detroit in a medically-induced coma. He is suffering from swelling and bleeding in his brain, according to CBS Detroit.
The injuries reportedly happened while 26-year-old Ronald Dimambro, boyfriend to Damian’s mother Nicole Sutton, was babysitting the child Wednesday. The Washington Township man was arraigned and charged with first-degree felony child abuse, according to the Detroit News. He is being held on bail set at $500,000. Local ABC affiliate WXYZ-TV reports his lawyer entered a not guilty plea in court.
