The number of deaths in Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, surged to at least 842 on Friday as information trickled in from remote areas previously cut off by the storm, according to a Reuters tally of death tolls given by officials.

Florida authorities sounded alarms not heard in years as Hurricane Matthew weakened early Friday but stayed on a path for the state’s east coast.
In a 2 a.m. ET bulletin, the National Hurricane Center said it had been downgraded to a Category 3 storm but warned that the “eye of extremely dangerous” storm was moving closer to the east coast of Florida.
The first band of rain from Matthew arrived in Florida on Thursday, ahead of a projected landfall — or near-landfall — between West Palm Beach and Cape Canaveral that Gov. Rick Scott warned would be “catastrophic.”
“There is no reason not to leave,” Scott grimly warned as the storm, which killed at least 128 people across the Caribbean, moved ever closer.

As Florida prepares for Hurricane Matthew’s arrival, cities in Cuba and Haiti are already coping with the aftermath of what Reuters called the “fiercest Caribbean storm in nearly a decade.”
The hurricane made landfall in Les Anglais, Haiti, early Tuesday morning, and up to 40 inches of rain in certain parts of the country. These conditions resulted in the deaths of at least 69 people, according to Reuters.
“We’ve already seen deaths. People who were out at sea. There are people who are missing. They are people who didn’t respect the alerts. They’ve lost their lives,” Interim Haitian President Jocelerme Privert said at a press conference reported on by CNN.

Hurricane Matthew, the fiercest Caribbean storm in nearly a decade, barreled toward the southeastern United States on Thursday after killing at least 69 people, mostly in Haiti, on its deadly northward march.
As Matthew blew through the northwestern Bahamas on Thursday, it was predicted to strengthen from a Category 3 to 4 storm en route to Florida’s Atlantic coast, the U.S. National HurricaneCenter said. The storm could either take direct aim at Florida or brush along the state’s coast on Thursday night.
Some 65 people were killed in Haiti and thousands were displaced after the storm smashed homes and inundated neighborhoods earlier in the week.

Donald Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R), spent much of the first and only vice presidential debate Tuesday night doing his damnedest to get Americans to forget all of the offensive things Trump has said.
Pence repeatedly tried to skirt around statements Trump actually said — or simply shook his head and ignored the question.
“I’m happy to defend [Trump],” Pence said.
But Pence rarely actually defended Trump. Instead, he dodged or outright denied his running mate’s statements.

Hurricane Matthew, the fiercest Caribbean storm in almost a decade, hit Cuba and Haiti with 140 mile-per-hour (230 kph) winds on Tuesday, pummeling towns, farmland and resorts, and forcing hundreds of thousands of people to take cover.
Dubbed by the U.N. the worst humanitarian crisis to hit Haiti since a devastating 2010 earthquake, the Category Four hurricane unleashed torrential rain on the island of Hispaniola that Haiti shares with Dominican Republic.
As it barreled towards the United States, the eye of the storm had reached the coast of eastern Cuba by Tuesday evening, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

The most powerful Atlantic tropical storm in more than a decade was gearing up Monday to deliver a potentially devastating blow to Haiti — a Caribbean country that’s still struggling to rebound from a series of earlier natural disasters.
Packing 130 mph winds, Hurricane Matthew was already lashing the Caribbean country with torrential rains as it crawled northward on Monday.
Jamaica and Cuba are also in path of the storm, and the Dominican Republic was expected to absorb a glancing blow. But Haiti will likely feel the full impact of Matthew’s fury later Monday when the center reaches the southwestern coast of the country.

The Donald J. Trump Foundation is being ordered to cease its activities in New York state by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
The charity was not properly registered under state law to conduct its activities and solicit donations, according to Schneiderman’s office.
“The Trump Foundation must immediately cease soliciting contributions or engaging in any other fund-raising activities in New York,” wrote James Sheehan, head of the NYS Attorney General’s Office Charities Bureau, in a letter sent Friday and released Monday.

The worst week of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign began with a widely criticized debate performance and ended with a bombshell report that he could have avoided paying federal income taxes for 18 years.
In between, the blustery Republican lashed out at a Latina beauty queen in a series of 5 a.m. tweets, faced opposition from conservative editorial boards, went after Bill Clinton’s history of infidelity while refusing to discuss his own, was found to have appeared in a Playboy soft core porn film, mocked Hillary Clinton’s recent battle with pneumonia, and told a crowd she “could actually be crazy.”
“This could be the worst week in presidential history for any candidate,” said Rick Tyler, a Republican strategist and former communications director to Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign. “I certainly wouldn’t know how to top it.”
