Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump declared a $916 million loss on his 1995 income tax returns and the large tax deduction may have allowed him to avoid paying federal income taxes for up to 18 years, the New York Times reported on Saturday.
The Trump campaign, in a statement responding to the Times report, said that the tax document was obtained illegally and that the New York Times is operating as an extension of the presidential campaign of Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
The Times said it had obtained Trump’s 1995 tax records and that they showed he received the large tax benefits from financial deals that went bad in the early 1990s

Two Vincent Van Gogh paintings have been recovered by police in Italy 14 years after being stolen, officials said Friday.
Police in Naples said the works — described as being of “priceless value” — were discovered during a crackdown targeting the Naples-based Camorra crime clan, The Associated Press reported.
They were taken from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in 2002 and “appear to be in relatively good condition,” according to a news release announcing the discovery.

A speeding commuter train plowed into a platform inside NJ Transit’s Hoboken Terminal during the Thursday morning rush hour, killing a woman and injuring 108 other people, officials said.
The train was traveling “at much too high rate of speed,” crashing through a series of barriers and taking down an interior wall of the station just before 9 a.m. ET, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said at a news conference after assessing the damage.
Witnesses reported seeing bruised and bloodied passengers, including a woman pinned underneath concrete. Riders had to break through train windows and climb to safety, helping one another amid rubble and twisted steel.

A 14-year-old boy shot a teacher and two young pupils, one of whom was critically wounded, at a South Carolina elementary school Wednesday, and his father was later found dead by the suspect’s grandmother at a nearby home, authorities said.
One of the injured boys, identified as Jacob Hall, was still listed in critical condition Thursday morning at Greenville Health System Children’s Hospital in Anderson County. No further details, including Jacob’s age, were provided. The teacher, a woman later identified as Meghan Hollingsworth, and the other boy were treated and released from a hospital.
The suspect, who officials said was home-schooled, was taken into custody without incident on the grounds of Townville Elementary School at 1:45 p.m. by a 30-year veteran of the Townville Volunteer Fire Department, authorities said.

Shimon Peres, who led Israel as prime minister and president in an enduring six-decade political career built on promoting peace between Arabs and Jews, died Tuesday while being hospitalized from a major stroke, his family announced.
He was 93.
“Today, with deep sorrow, we bid farewell to our beloved father, the ninth president of Israel, Shimon Peres,” Peres’ son, Chemi Peres, said at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv at around 7 a.m. Wednesday local time (midnight ET).
“He was one of the founding fathers of the state of Israel and served our people before we even had a country of our own. He worked tirelessly for Israel, from the very first day of the state to the last day of his life,” Chemi Peres said.

Michelle Obama offered a pointed critique of Donald Trump’s temperament on Wednesday, arguing that “a president can’t just pop off” when he or she is upset.
Speaking at a rally in Philadelphia for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, the first lady challenged Trump’s claim from Monday’s debate that he has a “much better temperament” than Clinton. While Obama didn’t mention Trump by name, the target of her condemnation was clear.
“When it comes to the qualifications we should demand in a president, to start with, we need someone who will take the job seriously. Someone who will study and prepare so that they understand the issues better than anyone on their team,” Obama said. “We need someone who is steady and measured, because when making life-or-death, war-or-peace decisions, a president can’t just pop off or lash out irrationally. No, we need an adult in the White House.”

Donald Trump, within striking distance of the presidency, stepped on stage here Monday and did what Hillary Clinton hoped he would.
He behaved like Donald Trump
The Clinton campaign’s greatest fear throughout the general election has been that some other Trump would emerge ― a more measured, reasonable and mature man, one who might look like he was ready for the Oval Office. That man doesn’t exist, so he didn’t show up.
Trump came out with a clear game plan targeted at Ohio and Pennsylvania voters frustrated with the loss of manufacturing, hitting Clinton on trade over and over.

Arnold Palmer — the pants-hitching, chain-smoking son of a greenskeeper who helped transform golf from an elite country club pursuit in to a sport for the masses, winning every major honor the game has to offer along the way — died Sunday at age 87.
Alastair Johnson, chief executive of Arnold Palmer Enterprises, told The Golf Channel — which Palmer co-founded, among his many successful business enterprises — that Palmer died Sunday afternoon from complications of heart problems. (The Golf Channel is a unit of the NBC Sports Group.)
“We are deeply saddened by the death of Arnold Palmer, golf’s greatest ambassador, at age 87,” the USGA said Sunday night. Multiple reports said he died in Pittsburgh, near his lifetime home of Latrobe, Pa.

The two major-party presidential campaigns have dramatically different expectations when it comes to what role moderators should play in the upcoming debates. One wants instantaneous pushback on a candidate’s spins and lies; the other views that as inappropriate.
Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager, Robby Mook, said Sunday that moderators, starting with NBC’s Lester Holt on Monday night, have an obligation to fact-check Donald Trump in real time.
“All that we’re asking is that, if Donald Trump lies, that it’s pointed out,” Mook said during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week.”
