Researchers at Stanford University announced this week that they’ve created genetic receptors that can act as a sort of “biological computer,” potentially revolutionizing how diseases are treated.
In a paper published in the journal “Science” on Friday, the team described their system of genetic transistors, which can be inserted into living cells and turned on and off if certain conditions are met. The researchers hope these transistors could eventually be built into microscopic living computers. Said computers would be able to accomplish tasks like telling if a certain toxin is present inside a cell, seeing how many times a cancerous cell has divided or determining precisely how an administered drug interacts with each individual cell.

Out of all the case files made public by the FBI online, the most popular is a memo from 1950 titled “FLYING SAUCERS,” the agency said this week.
The mysterious report from Guy Hottel, special agent in charge in Washington, begins with this:
“An investigator for the Air Force stated that three so-called flying saucers had been recovered in New Mexico. They were described as being circular in shape with raised centers, approximately 50 feet in diameter. Each one was occupied by three bodies of human shape but only 3 feet tall.”

In a scene straight out of the 1958 horror flick “The Blob,” a new YouTube clip shows a lump of magnetic silly putty completely engulfing a magnet.
The event, captured by YouTube user Scott Lawson, actually took an hour and a half, but luckily we’re treated to a time-lapse view.
How does it work? “Ferromagnetic particles in the putty are strongly attracted to the magnet and very slowly engulf the surface of the magnet,” Lawson wrote in the video’s description. “The putty looks and feels like regular silly putty, but the difference lies in the fact that it has been infused with millions of micron-sized ferrous particles.”

Authorised decision to destroy video of brutal interrogations in Thailand
A woman has become head of the CIA’s National Clandestine Service for the first time, it emerged today.
The unnamed operative was made acting director of the service last month – evoking parallels to fictional female spies from the likes of Homeland and Zero Dark Thirty.
For the woman to be given the job permanently, however, officials may have to overlook her controversial background, which included ordering videos of alleged torture to be destroyed.

Suspicion in the slayings of a Texas district attorney and his wife shifted Monday to a violent white supremacist prison gang that was the focus of a December law enforcement bulletin warning that its members might try to attack police or prosecutors.
The weekend deaths of Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, who were found fatally shot in their home, were especially jarring because they happened just a couple of months after one of the county’s assistant district attorneys, Mark Hasse, was killed near his courthouse office.
And less than two weeks ago, Colorado’s prison chief was shot to death at his front door, apparently by a white supremacist ex-convict who died in a shootout with deputies after fleeing to Texas.

Two inmates with long criminal histories – including one awaiting trial for capital murder – escaped an East Texas jail, dumped their black-and-white scrubs and were fleeing a manhunt Tuesday, authorities said.
Brian Allen Tucker of Sulphur Springs and John Marlin King of Cumby slipped past a fence around a recreation yard at the Hopkins County Jail around 8 a.m. Tuesday, officials with the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office said.
The two men dumped their jail uniforms on rail tracks near the jail, Deputy Alvin Jordan said. They had white T-shirts and boxer shorts on underneath, and Sheriff Butch Adams said it was possible they had clothes stashed on the outside.

President Barack Obama on Tuesday proposed an effort to map the brain’s activity in unprecedented detail, as a step toward finding better ways to treat such conditions as Alzheimer’s, autism, stroke and traumatic brain injuries.
He asked Congress to spend $100 million next year to start a project that will explore details of the brain, which contains 100 billion cells and trillions of connections.
That’s a relatively small investment for the federal government – less than a fifth of what NASA spends every year just to study the sun – but it’s too early to determine how Congress will react.

MIDDLE-AGED MAN BLAH'G
Midlife marks the beginning of what is known as “Third Age”. Third Age is an emerging life stage, running roughly from ages 50 to 75, made possible by our longer life expectancy. In essence it grants us a life bonus of 30 years not available to previous generations. Rich in possibilities and potential, it involves the creating of new roles and identity, a search for new meaning and profound change.
Third Age can be a time of renewal and transformation if we regard it as an opportunity as well as a challenge. Its opportunity lies in seeing our life as full of possibility, as a process of continual and surprising unfolding—building on our past, envisioning our future and living a more fulfilling present—and in knowing that we can make decisions geared to regeneration and fulfillment.
Its challenge lies in its uniqueness. Third Age provides an unprecedented opportunity…

MIDDLE-AGED MAN BLAH'G
by John D’oh!
Q: If a racehorse can be put out to stud, why can’t you?
A: Because you’re not a horse and life isn’t fair anyway.
After a few years of running in races and looking cool they ‘retire‘ by being put to pasture and get to have sex with a bunch of receptive females. Not bad.
Of course, it’s not all a run for the roses. Check the Pros and Cons of being a horse…
1) You’re hung like a horse
2) You’re shiny
3) Chick horses dig you
4) You’re fast
5) You’re hung like a horse
CONS
1) If you break your leg they shoot you
2) A midget sits on your back and beats you senseless
3) Buck teeth
4) No thumbs, hands, arms or fingers
5) Your midlife crisis happens when you’re 4
But let’s get serious for a moment…
