Microsoft is working on an interactive whiteboard which aims to interpret users’ sketches to complete the diagrams they were drawing.

The firm will unveil the prototype as part of Techfest – an annual event where its researchers reveal some of the projects they are working on.

The digital canvas is designed to help workers make sense of “big data” – the growing amount of information available from sensors and other sources.

Skin cancer ‘able to fight off body’s immune system’

A deadly form of skin cancer is able to fend off the body’s immune system, UK researchers have found.

Analysis of tumour and blood samples shows that melanoma knocks out the body’s best immune defence.

A potential test could work out which patients are likely to respond to treatment, the Journal of Clinical Investigation reports.

Cancer Research UK said the body’s response was a “complex puzzle”.

Previous work from the team at King’s College London showed that while patients with melanoma produced antibodies that could attack tumour cells, the immune system often seemed powerless to stop the cancer progressing.

‘Wrong’ immune response aids TB

Some bacteria, including tuberculosis, are able to invade because the body launches the ‘wrong’ immune response, say researchers.

Instead of fighting off tuberculosis, people with a severe infection produce a protein which attacks viruses, the journal Science reports.

About 8.7 million people are infected with tuberculosis every year.

The findings may explain why viruses can make people more susceptible to bacterial infections.

A spring peak in tuberculosis infections may be linked to the effects of viruses circulating in winter, experts suggested.

Bad sleep ‘dramatically’ alters body

The activity of hundreds of genes was altered when people’s sleep was cut to less than six hours a day for a week.

Writing in the journal PNAS, the researchers said the results helped explain how poor sleep damaged health.

Heart disease, diabetes, obesity and poor brain function have all been linked to substandard sleep.

What missing hours in bed actually does to alter health, however, is unknown.

So researchers at the University of Surrey analysed the blood of 26 people after they had had plenty of sleep, up to 10 hours each night for a week, and compared the results with samples after a week of fewer than six hours a night.

American Express (Amex) has launched a purchase-by-tweet service for its US-based customers.

Credit-card holders post a specific hashtag on Twitter to trigger payments from their accounts.

Products from Amazon, Sony and Microsoft are being offered at a discount to entice shoppers to use the new service.

However, one retail expert dismissed the initiative as a “gimmick” that was unlikely to catch on.

This is not Amex’s first tie-up with social media.

Supermassive black hole weighed using new scale

Researchers have proposed a new means for getting a measure of just how massive supermassive black holes are.

They are known to exist at the centres of most galaxies, but a puzzle remains as to how they affect galaxy evolution.

The approach, published in Nature, infers a black hole’s mass from the speed of molecules swirling around it.

It could help weigh hundreds of nearby black holes. Its first use suggests a black hole in the NGC4526 galaxy weighs 450 million times that of our Sun.

Keeping your kidneys healthy could be one of the best ways to extend your life if you have Type 2 diabetes, researchers have suggested.

The University of Washington study found that having kidney disease meant a much higher risk of early death.

UK experts say that the NHS is still not putting enough effort into detecting and controlling kidney problems caused by diabetes.

‘Quadruple helix’ DNA seen in human cells

Cambridge University scientists say they have seen four-stranded DNA at work in human cells for the first time.

The famous “molecule of life”, which carries our genetic code, is more familiar to us as a double helix.

But researchers tell the journal Nature Chemistry that the “quadruple helix” is also present in our cells, and in ways that might possibly relate to cancer.

They suggest that control of the structures could provide novel ways to fight the disease.

Some young children accurately diagnosed as autistic lose their symptoms and their diagnosis as they get older, say US researchers.

The findings of the National Institutes of Health study of 112 children appears to challenge the widely held belief that autism is a lifelong condition.

While not conclusive, the study, in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, suggests some children might possibly outgrow autism.
