Despite sharing 98 percent of our DNA with chimpanzees, humans have much bigger brains and are, as a species, much more intelligent. Now a new study sheds light on why: Unlike chimps, humans undergo a massive explosion in white matter growth, or the connections between brain cells, in the first two years of life.
The new results, published today (Dec. 18) in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, partly explain why humans are so much brainier than our nearest living relatives. But they also reveal why the first two years of life play such a key role in human development.
.

Unlike human brains, those of chimpanzees don’t go through a rapid explosion in neural connectivity during the first two years of life, which may explain humans’ superior intelligence.

After the horrifying shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school last week, people seem to be asking the same questions: What kind of person could open fire on innocent children? Why do such incidents keep happening? And what can we do to prevent such crimes?
We may never know what spurred the man who killed 20 children and six adults in Newtown, Conn., on Friday, and whether he could have been stopped.
But psychologists have created profiles of mass shooters, and many common themes — and even warning signs — emerge.
.

Psychologists say that people who commit mass shootings often have a consistent profile.

A quick-thinking music teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School found a secure spot for her students as soon as she heard the first salvo from the shooter’s gun.
Killer Adam Lanza arrived moments later at their locked closet door, pounding and yelling “Let me in,” while the students in Maryrose Kristopik’s class quietly hid inside, AFP reported.
“We were all really scared and then we prayed,” said 9-year-old Nicholas Sabillon, who was interviewed with his parents. “Miss Kristopik gave us all lollipops. We thought it would be our last snack.”

Connecticut’s chief medical examiner said he hopes Adam Lanza’s biology will help explain why the Sandy Hook shooter went on a deadly rampage.
The Hartford Courant reports that Dr. H. Wayne Carver has asked a geneticist at the University of Connecticut to join in his investigation of the killings.
“I’m exploring with the department of genetics what might be possible, if anything is possible,” Carver told the paper on Tuesday. “Is there any identifiable disease associated with this behavior?”

With chatter about the Mayan apocalypse intensifying as Dec. 21 approaches, you may have seen that while the ancient Mayan calendar “ends” on that day, the Maya themselves would not have seen that as the end of the world. But how does the Mayan calendar work, anyway?
It’s not as confusing as it might seem. The ancient Maya kept time in a very different way than we do today, and their hieroglyph-heavy calendar can seem daunting at first glance. But the basic principle is simply that the Maya were counting the days.
.

The Mayan Long Count Calendar, which did not predict a doomsday, included dates
written out as five hieroglyphs separated by four periods.

On Thursday, a television-centric feature called the TVii will be coming to Nintendo Wii U devices via a free download.
“The company that changed how we play is about to change how we watch,” trumpets the official Nintendo press release.

The year is drawing to a close, and DigitalGlobe has published its selection of the top 20 satellite images of 2012.
According to a written statement, the company’s satellites have been hard at work capturing images of “natural disasters, political issues, natural wonders and current events.” Now they’re hoping public input will help whittle down those top 20 images to one top satellite photo of 2012.

WASHINGTON — The National Rifle Association on Tuesday said it was prepared to offer “meaningful contributions” to ensure that events such as the massacre of 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., “never happen again.”
The NRA said it planned to hold a major news conference on Friday, but did not say what it would announce.

A month ago scientists at the Large Hadron Collider released the latest Higgs boson results. And although the data held few obvious surprises, most intriguing were the results that scientists didn’t share.
The original Higgs data from back in July had shown that the Higgs seemed to be decaying into two photons more often than it should—an enticing though faint hint of something new, some sort of physics beyond our understanding. In November, scientists at the Atlas and LHC experiments updated everything except the two-photon data. This week we learned why.
