A “drunk and racist” man was thrown off a train in the United Kingdom after ranting about a woman and her 4-year-old son in a scene caught on video.
Alexander MacKinnon pleaded guilty last week to a racially aggravated public order offense over the incident, which took place in December on a train from London to Glasgow, the Independent reported.
Sanaa Shahid was traveling with her 4-year-old son, Zayn, when she said MacKinnon asked how they got into first class.
“You don’t deserve to be in first class,” he said, Shahid told the Daily Record. “You should be in common class. In fact, you shouldn’t be in this country at all.”
Shahid, an attorney, told the newspaper she has lived in Scotland all her life.
She said 10 to 12 people witnessed the incident but did not speak up as MacKinnon, also an attorney, accosted her and insulted her son.

The Conservative Party swept to power Friday in Britain’s parliamentary elections, winning an unexpected majority that returns Prime Minister David Cameron to 10 Downing Street in a stronger position than before.
Cameron went to Buckingham Palace, where he was expected to tell Queen Elizabeth II that he has enough support to form a government.
That brings the election to a much-quicker-than-expected conclusion. Polls ahead of Election Day had shown Conservatives locked in a tight race with the opposition Labour Party, raising the possibility of days or weeks of negotiations to form a government.

You know the one.
Little Tikes’ Cozy Coupe — the red plastic, yellow-roofed model that’s been awkwardly piloted across suburban sidewalks by toddlers everywhere since 1979 — is now street legal. And it might help raise money for charity.
John Bitmead, a mechanic in Oxfordshire, England, spent about $6,600 and 1,000 hours over the course of five months converting a Daewoo Matiz into an adult version of the classic toy. His two-seat car runs on unleaded gasoline and can go from 0 to 60 MPH in 17 seconds. Not bad when the original runs on children’s foot power.

SUMMARY: A healthy baby boy was born using a new method of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Doctors hope the new procedure will reduce the risk of a rare but potentially fatal complication of traditional IVF.
Doctors in the United Kingdom hope they have found a way to make in vitro fertilization safer for women. They’ve discovered a naturally-derived hormone called “kisspeptin” that stimulates a woman’s ovaries for egg production, but the new IVF treatment is gentler than traditional methods. The procedure has already produced a healthy baby boy for a very happy family.

Antibiotic resistance poses a catastrophic threat to medicine and could mean patients having minor surgery risk dying from infections that can no longer be treated, Britain’s top health official said on Monday.
Sally Davies, the chief medical officer for England, said global action is needed to fight antibiotic, or antimicrobial, resistance and fill a drug “discovery void” by researching and developing new medicines to treat emerging, mutating infections.
Only a handful of new antibiotics have been developed and brought to market in the past few decades, and it is a race against time to find more, as bacterial infections increasingly evolve into “superbugs” resistant to existing drugs.

The CDC has issued updates on the SARS-like coronavirus that started in September; the fungal meningitis outbreak resulting from steroid injections; and the waning flu season.
Human transmission of the novel coronavirus may be possible, according to an update from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the SARS-like coronavirus outbreak that started last September and has claimed 8 of the 14 people confirmed to have had it.
“Three of the confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection were identified in the United Kingdom as part of a cluster within one family,” according to the CDC.
