Almost every man alive can trace his origins to one man who lived about 135,000 years ago, new research suggests. And that ancient man likely shared the planet with the mother of all women.
The findings, detailed today (Aug. 1) in the journal Science, come from the most complete analysis of the male sex chromosome, or the Y chromosome, to date. The results overturn earlier research, which suggested that men’s most recent common ancestor lived just 50,000 to 60,000 years ago.
Despite their overlap in time, ancient “Adam” and ancient “Eve” probably didn’t even live near each other, let alone mate.
“Those two people didn’t know each other,” said Melissa Wilson Sayres, a geneticist at the University of California, Berkeley, who was not involved in the study.

What explains Usain Bolt’s speed? Track fans have been debating that question for years, and now a team of physicists from the National University of Mexico in Mexico City have created a mathematical model that helps explain how the world’s fastest man is able to bolt 100 meters in well under 9.6 seconds.
“As far as our study can reveal, he seems to be able to develop more power than other runners,” study co-author Dr. Jorge Hernandez, a professor of biophysics at the university, told The Huffington Post in an email. “A way of doing it is that he finds a way to reduce the area (cross section, as we call it) he presents to the air. Maybe adopting a running position that reduces this area, but that wouldn’t reduce his performance/ability to deploy the power he actually does.”
The researchers analyzed Bolt’s 100-meter sprint in the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, where he set a new world record at 9.58 seconds. Considering Bolt’s height (he stands six-foot, five inches), race-day conditions, and the speed he reached, the scientists calculated the amount of drag that Bolt had to overcome to set that record.

Hannah Anderson says a longtime family friend “tricked” her into visiting his house, tied up her mother and younger brother in his garage and kidnapped her, setting off a massive search that stretched across much of the western U.S.
And when she later learned they were found dead in her captor’s burning Southern California house, the 16-year-old said she cried all night.
“I wish I could go back in time and risk my life to try and save theirs. I will never forgive myself for not trying harder to save them,” she wrote in a harrowing account on a social media site roughly two days after she was rescued and FBI agents killed James Lee DiMaggio in the Idaho wilderness.
Many of the hundreds of the questions she fielded on the social media site were typical teenage fare, including her favorite musical performers, but she also told of how she was kidnapped, how she survived captivity and how she is coping with the deaths of her mother and brother.
The postings, which began Monday night and stopped Tuesday night, appeared on the ask.fm social-networking site account for “Hannahbanana722” of Lakeside, the San Diego suburb where the teen lived with her mother and brother. The account was disabled Wednesday.

A horrifying crime scene in South Miami hit Facebook Thursday when a man posted a photo of his dead wife — and a confession that he had killed her.
Derek Medina posted the photo some time around noon Thursday, with the words “Rip Jennifer Alfonso.” The image shows his wife’s leggings-clad body slumped backwards on the floor in what appears to be the couple’s kitchen. Her face and left arm are covered in blood.
“You will see me in the news,” reads a confessional status update posted minutes before the photo:
Im going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife love you guys miss you guys takecare Facebook people you will see me in the news” my wife was punching me and I am not going to stand anymore with the abuse so I did what I did I hope u understand me “According to an arrest affidavit by Miami-Dade Police, Medina told investigators he and Alfonso had a verbal dispute around 10:00 a.m., during which he grabbed a gun from a closet and pointed it at his wife. She reportedly told Medina she was leaving him before the dispute moved downstairs.
There, Medina told police, Alfonso began punching him. He retrieved the gun from upstairs and again confronted his wife, prompting her to pick up a knife. He told detectives that when he took the knife away, his wife began hitting him again, at which point he shot her several times.

Quietly, upstart American automaker Elio Motors has been making headway on plans to produce an 84-MPG car that is expected to cost roughly $6,800 — and it only has three wheels.
The Elio, as it is known, is essentially marketed as a cost-conscious, fuel economy-intensive commuter machine. Elio Motors namesake and CEO Paul Elio said as a single father, he would still have a need for a minivan from time to time, but a majority of his driving miles would be much more efficiently accomplished in the three-wheeled, two-place machine.
“The premise behind the vehicle is that most households have at least one car that’s primarily a single occupant,” Elio said.
“Like in my situation, I’m a single dad. I have three kids…and I have a minivan. This is why America drives big vehicles. I’m the case-in-point. I could get by with a small sedan most days. But if I want to take my kids camping, I need the minivan.

The enigmatic image is perhaps the most reproduced in art history, but it’s never before been painted on such a small canvas.
Using a novel nanotechnique, researchers have made a miniature Mona Lisa that stretches 30 microns across, just a third of the width of a human hair.
A team from Georgia Tech created the molecular masterpiece using an atomic force microscope and a process dubbed ThermoChemical NanoLithography, or TCNL for short.
Each 125-nanometer pixel of the “Mini Lisa” represents a confined set of chemical reactions. The technique allowed the researchers to control the amount of heat applied over each pixel to vary the number of new molecules created in each spot. More heat resulted in more molecules and lighter shades of gray. In this way, the team made the tiny copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous work, pixel by pixel.

Police found the body of a California man missing for more than two years in a freezer in his girlfriend’s storage unit, authorities said Thursday.
Officers found the body of Jeffrey Korber in June after searching the unit in Ventura as part of a homicide investigation, Ventura police Cmdr. Darin Schindler said.
Now, police are seeking more information about Mary “Francesca” Hannan, 66, and her son Michael Bresnak, Schindler said.
Ventura police said in a statement they believe Bresnak killed Korber at his mother’s Ventura home and that she helped him store the body. Police declined to release additional details of the killing.
Bresnak, 49, is currently in the Ventura County jail on an unrelated violation of the terms of his release for a drug-related conviction, police said. He has not been charged in this case.
Hannan, who is listed as an attorney on the State Bar of California’s website, has not been arrested. Efforts to reach her by telephone were not immediately successful.

A soldier who was repeatedly shot during the Fort Hood shooting rampage says he played dead before realizing the gunman might notice he was sweating.
Staff Sgt. Alonzo Lunsford testified Tuesday during the opening day of the trial for Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who is accused of killing 13 people.
Alonzo told jurors he panicked when he saw Hasan was holding a weapon inside a building where soldiers were preparing to deploy in November 2009.
Alonzo says he tried to appear dead after being shot, then later decided to flee because, “dead men don’t sweat.”
He says soldiers were trying to push their way out of a double-door exit, but one door was locked shut, so it created a bottleneck.

A Florida man expressed indignation after being arrested July 30 for supposedly shooting a black man in the head, explaining to police that he had “only shot a n—-r,” police said.
Walton Henry Butler, 59, allegedly shot the 32-year-old Everett Gant in the head, who visited his Port Saint Joe apartment to confront him about making racist comments to children in the apartment complex, according to the Broward Palm Beach New Times. The blog reports that Butler proceeded to eat dinner as Gant lay bleeding outside his door and cites an affidavit saying that Butler used the racial slur when questioned by the sheriff.
Butler is charged with attempted murder with a hate crime enhancement.

Historically, Apple hasn’t been one to offer sneak peeks of anything. That changed today with the next-generation Mac Pro — likely a function of the fact that teasing such a machine couldn’t possibly weaken sales of a desktop that hasn’t been updated in a technological eternity. Waiting just outside of the concourse walls was one of the prototype cylinders, and it’s perhaps the sexiest workstation this world has ever seen. All we know for now is that it’ll make its debut “later this year,” boasting four USB sockets, six Thunderbolt 2 ports, a full-size HDMI connector, a 3.5mm headphone port and a pair of gigabit Ethernet ports. And yes, it’s almost certainly a fingerprint magnet.
