Two Belgian brothers who were born deaf and were slowly going blind chose to end their lives the way they began them: together. The dual deaths of the identical twins last month marked the first reported double euthanasia of twins worldwide.
Marc and Eddy Verbessem, 45, were inseparable during their lives, the Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws reports. Suffering from an incurable illness, the pair shared a room in their parental home before studying shoe repair and moving in together in a small apartment.

Did you know that the particles in a sneeze travel at 100 miles per hour? Find out more fun facts about sneezing.
Why do we sneeze? The long-standing answer has been that sneezing is a reflex. When irritants — such as germs, dust, pollen, animal dander, or pollutants, just to name just a few — infiltrate the nose lining, the brain sends out a signal to get rid of it. That triggers a deep breath, which gets held in the lungs. As a result, the chest muscles tighten and pressure builds. The tongue pushes against the roof of the mouth, forcing breath to come out fast through the nose — Achoo!

Which is our universe’s oldest star? Astronomers now say the honor may go to HD 140283, a gassy giant that’s celebrated an estimated 13.2 billion birthdays, give or take a couple hundred million, according to the January 2013 issue of Nature.
“We believe this star is the oldest known in the Universe with a well determined age,” Howard Bond, an astronomer at Pennsylvania State University, told Nature. The finding was announced January 10, at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Long Beach, Calif.

The oldest known star in the universe is ‘HD 140283,’ estimated to be 13.2 billion years old (not pictured).

Children are not the only ones who can learn from Big Bird and brain scans of children and adults watching “Sesame Street” reveal how brains change as they learn reading and math, researchers say.
One goal of brain imaging is discovering more about how children learn. Such an understanding of the building blocks of learning might help diagnose and treat learning difficulties.
For instance, “when children fail to learn mathematics well, there could be a number of different reasons for that and it could be that they have weak concepts of numbers, that they have poor memory, that they have limited attention,” researcher Jessica Cantlon, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Rochester in New York, told LiveScience. Brain tests could help determine the precise cause of a kid’s math impairments, “because different patterns of brain activity likely accompany each of those different cognitive impairments.”

A British schoolgirl visiting relatives in a rural village in northern Jamaica was fatally shot when a lone gunman opened fire on a group of family members as they gathered at a roadside shop, officials said Sunday.
Imani Green, 8, of Balham in south London, was standing inside a clapboard grocery store and bar with Jamaican relatives Friday evening when a gunman wearing a hoodie shot the child in the head and shoulder before also shooting and wounding three adult members of her family.

Thanks to the residents of a Texas city and a Facebook campaign that has gone viral, an abused dog who was was left for dead in a garbage bag has been given a new chance at life.
The pooch, who has since been named “Buck,” was reportedly found on Jan. 5, after a local resident of Conroe, Tex., noticed that a garbage bag left on the side of the road and “tied to a t-post of a fence” was moving. He tore the bag open and was shocked to find the 3-year-old mixed breed, covered in blood and weakened by the cold, inside.

Brooke Greenberg was born prematurely in Baltimore in 1993. She had an unusual organ system and disfigured hips. Almost no doctors expected her to live more than a year.
What no one expected, however, was that at 18, Brooke would be the only known adult to still be physically and mentally 11 months old. She has shown no signs of aging and the only body parts that have grown at a normal rate
are her fingernails and hair.
She has trouble digesting and needs to be fed through a tube.
Despite this, she is still a happy infant and enjoys the same activities most babies do. Doctors have found that her body is growing at different rates.

New photos of Mars from NASA’s Curiosity rover have sparked a buzz of discussion over an odd formation that some have dubbed a “flower” embedded in a Martian rock. The rover has also found a snake-like rock formation winding across the Red Planet’s surface.
The so-called Mars “flower” photo was snapped on Dec. 19 by the microscope-like Mars Hand Lens Imager at the end of Curiosity’s robotic arm. At the lower left of the image is a strange, apparently transparent formation that some Internet forum users on the website claimed looked much like a flower, according to NBCNews.com’s photoblog.

Astral projection is an out-of -body experience that can be achieved either during sleep, lucid dreaming, hypnosis, deep meditation or conscious projection. During astral projection the consciousness leaves the physical body and moves into the Astral or Etheric body in order to experience and learn. You remain attached to your physical body via the ‘silver umbilical cord’ and this cord cannot be broken until the time of death. It is quite possible to see this cord while astral traveling but it is not guaranteed. While your Astral body is out traveling your physical body is quite safe and rests in the sleep state.
