Surprisingly modern and upscale isn’t it. Consistent unflattering media portrayals would have you to believe something entirely different… e.g. Africa is still some kind of wild, savage, and untamed jungle. I wonder why that is? tangie

Former FIFA executive Chuck Blazer admitted in 2013 to accepting bribes related to South Africa’s 2010 World Cup bid, according to court filings released Wednesday.
Blazer, who worked with the Department of Justice to single out other FIFA officials in connection to corruption charges, told the Eastern District New York Court that he and others on FIFA’s executive committee agreed to take bribes from South Africa in relation to the country’s World Cup bid.
“Among other things, I agreed with other persons in or around 1992 to facilitate the acceptance of a bribe in conjunction with the selection of the host nation for the 1998 World Cup,” he told Judge Raymond J. Dearie.

A judge convicted Oscar Pistorius of culpable homicide Friday in the death of his girlfriend, ruling that the former track star was negligent when he opened fire in his home after hearing what he said sounded like an intruder in a bathroom in the middle of the night.
.
The judge acquitted Pistorius of a more serious murder charge, a day after saying that the onetime Olympian could have called security guards or screamed for help on the balcony instead of grabbing his handgun and blasting multiple rounds through the door of a toilet stall.

Poachers in South Africa reached a milestone in 2013 when they killed more than 1,000 rhinos for their horns.
The harrowing benchmark is a new record for poaching in the African nation. It represents more than a 50 percent increase from the year before, Reuters reports.
South Africa is home to the majority of the world’s rhino population, so mass killings of this volume is a dire warning for conservationists, the outlet notes. The black rhino is considered “critically endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), while the white rhino is classified as “near threatened.” Both subspecies live in South Africa.

Former South African President Nelson Mandela, who served 27 years in prison for anti-apartheid activities and led his continent into a new era, has died at age 95.
South African President Jacob Zuma confirmed the news:
“He is now resting. He is now at peace,” Zuma said. “Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father.”
Born Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela in Transkei, South Africa, the civil rights activist would become the linchpin in South Africans’ move to end the country’s notorious apartheid regime. The impact of his efforts — to reconcile generosity with pragmatism and to find the common ground between humanity’s higher values and his own aspiration to power, as journalist John Carlin once described them — would ultimately reach well beyond South Africa’s borders, and earn him a Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
Prior to doing so, however, Mandela earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Fort Hare, during which time he was elected onto the Student’s Representative Council and suspended from college for joining in a protest boycott.
