A new fossilized, cigar-shaped creature that lived about 520 million years ago has been unearthed in Morocco.
The newfound species, Helicocystis moroccoensis, has “characteristics that place it as the most primitive echinoderm that has fivefold symmetry,” said study co-author Andrew Smith, a paleontologist at the Natural History Museum in London, referring to the group of animals that includes starfish and sea urchins. Modern echinoderms typically have five-point symmetry, such as the five arms of the starfish or the sand dollar’s distinctive pattern.
The primitive sea creature, described today (June 25) in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, could even change its body shape from slender to stumpy. Researchers say it is a transitional animal that could help explain how early echinoderms evolved their unique body plans, Smith said.
.
During the Cambrian explosion, the diversity of life exploded and bizarre sea creatures such as the Helcocystis moroccoensis flourished.

The habitable zone of a nearby star is filled to the brim with planets that could support alien life, scientists announced today (June 25).
An international team of scientists found a record-breaking three potentially habitable planets around the star Gliese 667C, a star 22 light-years from Earth that is orbited by at least six planets, and possibly as many as seven, researchers said. The three planet contenders for alien life are in the star’s “habitable zone” — the temperature region around the star where liquid water could exist. Gliese 667C is part of a three-star system, so the planets could see three suns in their daytime skies.
The three potentially rocky planets in Gliese 667C’s habitable zone are known as super-Earths — exoplanets that are less massive than Neptune but more massive than Earth. Their orbits make them possible candidates for hosting life, officials from the European Southern Observatory said in a statement.

Farmers expect to reap what they sow. So it was quite a surprise when Bruce Lilienthal found a meteorite half-buried in a field on his farm in Minnesota’s Sibley County, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.
“We didn’t know what it was at first,” Lilienthal said of the flat, oddly heavy rock in an interview with KEYC-TV.
“We’ve done enough tests to be sure it’s a meteorite,” Dr. Calvin Alexander, a meteorite expert and professor of earth sciences at the University of Minnesota, told the Star Tribune. “It is not part of the Earth. It fell out of the sky.”
Dr. Alexander told The Huffington Post in an email that he examined the 33-pound rock at his office in Minneapolis on May 30, after Lilienthal and his wife brought it in. A variety of tests — including chemical analysis and electron microscopy — convinced him that what he calls the “Lilienthal object” is an iron meteorite.

A 16-year-old gang member was sentenced Friday to 90 years to life in prison for killing a 1-year-old boy who was shot as the toddler lay in his father’s arms on a South Los Angeles street.
Donald Ray Dokins was convicted in April of first-degree murder and attempted murder in the June 2012 shooting. Jurors also found true gun and gang allegations against Dokins, who was 15 at the time of the crime but was charged as an adult, City News Service reported.
During Friday’s sentencing hearing, Compton Superior Court Judge Patrick Connolly chastised Dokins, asking him: “Why did you do this? Were you fighting an imaginary war?”
Prosecutors said Dokins rode up on a bicycle and opened fire on a crowd standing outside a South LA home.

A Kentucky teen was reported missing on Saturday after a couch fire erupted, consuming the entire floor beneath it.
Police don’t know if the fire at a Berea, Ky., home had anything to do with the disappearance of Brookelyn Farthing, 18, but they said it is “suspicious” and are still investigating the incident, according to ABC News.
Authorities told ABC the home belonged to a friend of Farthing’s ex-boyfriend and the teen was thought to have been staying there.
“This family needs her,” Farthing’s stepfather, Randal Walker, told WKYT. “This family’s not whole without her.”
The man Farthing was staying with told police he left the home and, when he returned, she was gone. Many of her possessions were still at the house, according to WKYT.
“I want God’s will to be done, and I want Brooke found, and I think it’s God’s will that Brooke be found,” Walker told WTVQ. “It’s not just us, if someone’s got her, it’s not just us that you’ll have to pay, it’s God.”

At least $15 million was stolen via online infiltration of 15 financial companies — including JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Citigroup (C), E*Trade (ETFC), PayPal (EBAY), TIAA-CREF, and TD Ameritrade (AMTD) — overly a nearly two-year period. The perpetrators of the scheme were a group of hackers and identity thieves led by two Ukrainian nationals, according to authorities. Eight men have been charged, and four are in custody, the LA Times reports.
“Cybercriminals penetrated some of our most trusted financial institutions as part of a global scheme that stole money and identities from people in the United States,” said New Jersey U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman in a statement. The criminal complaint against the men alleges that they moved money from online accounts onto prepaid debit cards, then used the cards to withdraw cash from ATMs or make purchases throughout the United States. According to the LA Times, “Much of the money that was cashed out was wired to the two leaders.”

For years, the resting place of American hero Amelia Earhart has been considered among aviation’s greatest mysteries. But now, pictures of the island she may have lived on before her death could shed new light on her last flight.
Taken on Dec. 1, 1938, more than a year after Earhart’s disappearance, the aerial photos of Gardner Island (now known as Nikumaroro Island) may provide evidence of Earhart’s camp or crash site, according to Discovery News.
The photos surfaced earlier this month in a tin box in the New Zealand Air Force Museum, where they had apparently lain forgotten for decades, according to New Zealand news site Stuff.co.nz.
Ric Gillespie, executive director of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR), said he and a team will be flying to New Zealand in July to examine the photos, which appear to include visible footprints that may have belonged to Earhart or her navigator, Fred Noonan, ABC reports.

Hours before dying in a fiery car crash, award-winning journalist Michael Hastings sent an email to his colleagues, warning that federal authorities were interviewing his friends and that he needed to go “off the rada[r]” for a bit.
The email was sent around 1 p.m. on Monday, June 17. At 4:20 a.m. the following morning, Hastings died when his Mercedes, traveling at high speeds, smashed into a tree and caught on fire. He was 33.
Hastings sent the email to staff at BuzzFeed, where he was employed, but also blind-copied a friend, Staff Sgt. Joseph Biggs, on the message. Biggs, who Hastings met in 2008 when he was embedded in his unit in Afghanistan, forwarded the email to KTLA, who posted it online on Saturday.

At age 4, Tan Le and her family left Vietnam as refugees, venturing out to sea without a clear plan. Her upbringing ultimately inspired her to think big, and now she is making a major difference in the world.
“Anything, even death, would be better than life in that environment,” the CEO of Emotiv Lifesciences describes of the once war-torn country. Upon immigrating to Australia, Le’s parents impressed upon her and her siblings to “work hard, study hard, get good marks at school and then do something worthwhile with our lives.”
Initially, Le began with the simple desire to be able to move something with her mind. That idea led to the creation of the Emotiv EPOC, a headset that “picks up electrical fluctuations that result from neurons firing inside your brain.” With a set of 14 sensors, the device can detect the user’s thoughts, feelings and expressions in real time.
