British police say they have launched a full investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, and want to trace 38 “persons of interest” in the case.
Detectives say it’s possible that Madeleine, who vanished from a Portuguese holiday resort six years ago, is still alive.
Scotland Yard said Thursday that 12 of the individuals of interest are British, and the rest from a variety of European countries. The force says it is working with governments across the continent to find out more.
McCann vanished from a vacation home in Portugal’s Algarve region on May 3, 2007, days before her fourth birthday. The case has generated intense media interest.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood said police “continue to believe that there is a possibility that Madeleine is alive.”

On Monday, Facebook officially rolled out Graph Search to everyone on the social network. The new search engine, originally accessible to only a select group after its introduction in March, lets you search through the mountains of information the site’s more than 1 billion members produce daily. Starting this week, everyone with a Facebook account can find “friends from London who like ‘True Blood’ ” or “married people who like prostitutes.”
In Facebook’s attempt to connect friends and friends of friends to one another, your information, now fed into a search engine, is more public ever before. If you’re irked by the the idea of strangers finding out personal details of your life with a few clicks in a search bar, there are steps you can take to ensure your privacy on Facebook.

While most college students are not having casual sex, one-night stands are correlated with anxiety, a new study has found.
The study, titled “Risky Business,” was released in June in the “The Journal of Sex Research.” It was led by Dr. Melina M. Bersamin of California State University, Sacramento, and surveyed 3,907 heterosexual college students, ages 18 to 25, from 30 different colleges. “Casual sex” was defined in the study as intercourse with someone the student had known for less than a week.
Researchers found that men were twice as likely as women to report casual sex, although only 11 percent of those surveyed overall had such an encounter. And despite the disparity between men and women engaging in casual sex, the study found a correlation between hooking up and emotional problems that did not discriminate by gender.

According to a recently published study, one of the reasons men perform oral sex on female partners may be to minimize the risk of infidelity.
The study, published late last month in the Journal of Evolutionary Psychology, sought to discover why men perform oral sex on women, since the act does not lead directly to reproduction.
After surveying 243 adult men in heterosexual relationships, the researchers deduced that cunnilingus is used to discourage women from cheating, a theory the authors refer to as a “mate-retention strategy.”
The research suggests that men perform oral sex on their female partners in order “to minimize the risk of their partner’s infidelity by increasing her relationship satisfaction.”
The study has garnered some negative reactions across the web: An article on The Gloss wondered why the researchers aren’t “questioning the evolutionary advantage of oral sex for men? Isn’t that purposeless, too?” And Handbag.com writer Kate Gilbert pointed out that perhaps men perform oral sex because it’s pleasurable: “Sorry science guys — sometimes things are just meant for fun.”

A 43-year-old house painter so badly brain damaged that he can’t speak has been awarded $58 million by a jury after a beating at a bar left him with half his skull permanently bashed in.
Antonio Lopez Chaj (chy) appeared at a news conference Monday with lawyers who announced the award handed down against a security company Friday in Torrance Superior Court.
It was among the largest damage awards ever given to one person in California, the lawyers said. They said they expect an appeal and there could be settlement negotiations before Chaj receives anything.
Chaj had to be supported by relatives at the news conference. When he took off a baseball cap hiding his injuries, gasps could be heard from people present.
“His skull is like a pie with 25 percent cut out of it,” said attorney Federico Sayre.
Chaj was attacked at a mid-Wilshire bar after trying to intercede in an attack by a bartender and security guard on two relatives who were with him.
Lawyers said an unlicensed, untrained security guard beat Chaj with a baton, kicked him in the head eight times and smashed his skull against pavement four times.

A Philadelphia man charged with putting heroin and methadone in his infant son’s bottle to quiet him, but instead killing him, was convicted Tuesday of third-degree murder.
Orlando Rosado, 46, did not testify at the one-day trial, but the defense said Rosado accidentally put the drugs in the baby’s 3 a.m. bottle during a heroin relapse. His son, Christopher, died two days shy of his first birthday in May 2012.
Common Pleas Judge Barbara McDermott said she based her verdict in the nonjury trial partly on Rosado’s conduct afterward, when he gave changing statements to police, including an attempt to blame the death on his 5-year-old daughter.
“I was appalled when I heard that,” McDermott said.
Yet McDermott says she knows Rosado regrets his actions. He told police his son was “his heart and soul.”

A man apparently committed suicide just moments after he was convicted of sodomizing a 14-year-old girl.
A coroner’s report and witness accounts indicate that Steve Parsons, 48, of Maryville, Mo., swallowed a cyanide pill inside the courtroom on Thursday just after a jury pronounced him guilty of statutory sodomy, according to KCTV. Minutes later, he was “convulsing” and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
“It’s not common to see someone just fall over dead in the courtroom even though they’ve just been found guilty of a crime,” Sheriff Darrin White, who was in the courtroom when the verdict was read, told Fox4KC.
Parsons placed an overnight delivery of cyanide on June 25, authorities told the St Joseph Post.

Police in Florida say a man fatally shot an innocent motorist who he mistook for someone he fought with earlier outside a nearby strip club.
Jerome Edward Hayes, 48, turned himself over to authorities Monday in connection to the shooting death of Fred William Turner, WPTV reports.
Investigators initially believed Turner, 47, was the victim of road rage when he was found dead on the side of Interstate-4 around 3 p.m. Saturday.
Police said that Turner called 911 to report that he was being followed and felt threatened.
“While on the phone the victim stated that the vehicle following him had earlier pulled up next to his vehicle and someone displayed what appeared to be a semi automatic weapon to him,” the Hillsborough County Sheriff said. “The victim stated that he had done nothing to cause someone to follow him.”

You may have already read our Sony Xperia Z Ultra hands-on last week, but since then we’ve also been able to spend a tiny bit more time with a pre-production unit (with firmware build 14.1.B.1.277). Instead of going over again how hilariously large this 6.4-inch, pen-friendly phone is, this time we’ll focus on some early benchmark results, camera performance and Sony’s very own UX features.
As you’ll see after the break, many of the benchmark scores aren’t too far off from what we saw on the MDP phone with the same Snapdragon 800 SoC, and the final units should be optimized with higher numbers. While we didn’t manage to get CF-Bench and Quadrant running on the phone, the higher-than-before 3DMark score did cheer us up, meaning either Sony or Qualcomm’s managed to fine tune the latter’s new Adreno 330 GPU.

Then, just as quickly as the 6-foot-tall frozen beast surfaced, it vanished — until now.
Earlier this year, Steve Busti — owner of the Museum of the Weird in Austin, Texas — bought the ice man from the family of its original owner in Minnesota. He’s going to once again reveal the ape-like creature to the world starting July 3 at his museum.
Before his big purchase, Busti spent the last two years researching the Minnesota Iceman and trying to pin down its location. He found that the original exhibitor, Frank Hansen, had it in a freezer at his home for decades after its last showing. It’s still unclear why the big, hairy popsicle’s tour abruptly ended.
Somehow, Hansen managed to keep Mr. Freeze out of the public eye until he died about 10 years ago. Busti also learned that rumors of the Minnesota Iceman being discovered in Siberia were untrue.
.
In the 1960s, the “Minnesota Iceman” was paraded from mall to fairground, leaving rumors of Bigfoot, missing links and government conspiracy in its wake.
