Germany has a new holder for the title of “heaviest baby.”
Jasleen was born at University Hospital in Leipzig on July 26, weighing in at 13.47 pounds, and measuring 22.6 inches long — and she was delivered without the help of a C-section, reports the New York Daily News.
The medical term for babies born weighing more than 8 pounds, 13 ounces is “fetal macrosomia,” and heavy babies are often attributed to maternal obesity and diabetes, among other factors. In Jasleen’s case, doctors said her size is due to an undiagnosed case of gestational diabetes, reports the German paper Der Spiegel, which adds that both baby and Mom are doing well, though Jasleen remains in the hospital.
Until Jasleen’s birth last week the title of Germany’s “heaviest” or “largest” baby belonged to one named Jihad, who was born in November 2011 and weighed in at 13 pounds.

The enigmatic image is perhaps the most reproduced in art history, but it’s never before been painted on such a small canvas.
Using a novel nanotechnique, researchers have made a miniature Mona Lisa that stretches 30 microns across, just a third of the width of a human hair.
A team from Georgia Tech created the molecular masterpiece using an atomic force microscope and a process dubbed ThermoChemical NanoLithography, or TCNL for short.
Each 125-nanometer pixel of the “Mini Lisa” represents a confined set of chemical reactions. The technique allowed the researchers to control the amount of heat applied over each pixel to vary the number of new molecules created in each spot. More heat resulted in more molecules and lighter shades of gray. In this way, the team made the tiny copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous work, pixel by pixel.

Police found the body of a California man missing for more than two years in a freezer in his girlfriend’s storage unit, authorities said Thursday.
Officers found the body of Jeffrey Korber in June after searching the unit in Ventura as part of a homicide investigation, Ventura police Cmdr. Darin Schindler said.
Now, police are seeking more information about Mary “Francesca” Hannan, 66, and her son Michael Bresnak, Schindler said.
Ventura police said in a statement they believe Bresnak killed Korber at his mother’s Ventura home and that she helped him store the body. Police declined to release additional details of the killing.
Bresnak, 49, is currently in the Ventura County jail on an unrelated violation of the terms of his release for a drug-related conviction, police said. He has not been charged in this case.
Hannan, who is listed as an attorney on the State Bar of California’s website, has not been arrested. Efforts to reach her by telephone were not immediately successful.

A soldier who was repeatedly shot during the Fort Hood shooting rampage says he played dead before realizing the gunman might notice he was sweating.
Staff Sgt. Alonzo Lunsford testified Tuesday during the opening day of the trial for Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who is accused of killing 13 people.
Alonzo told jurors he panicked when he saw Hasan was holding a weapon inside a building where soldiers were preparing to deploy in November 2009.
Alonzo says he tried to appear dead after being shot, then later decided to flee because, “dead men don’t sweat.”
He says soldiers were trying to push their way out of a double-door exit, but one door was locked shut, so it created a bottleneck.

The Army psychiatrist who faces the death penalty for the 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood has told jurors that “the evidence will clearly show that I am the shooter.”
Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan on Tuesday began his court martial with opening statements that lasted less than two minutes. He told jurors: “The evidence presented during the trial will only show one side.”
The 42-year-old Hasan had wanted to argue that he shot U.S. troops to protect Taliban fighters in Afghanistan. But the judge forbade the American-born Muslim from using that defense.
Hasan was shot in the back during the rampage and was paralyzed from the waist down.

Seattle-based author and editor Jane Catherine Lotter had many accomplishments in her life — notably, a weekly humor column called “Jane Explains” and a recently published comic novel, The Bette Davis Club — but at the end of her life, she didn’t define success in terms of her career achievements.
Lotter died of endometrial cancer on July 18 at the age of 60, survived by her husband, 19-year-old son and 23-year-old daughter. One of the “few advantages” of dying of cancer, Lotter wrote with characteristic humor and wit in the Seattle Times, “is that you have time to write your own obituary.” Lotter’s touching tribute to her own life went viral on Twitter shortly after it was published.

Chris Brown took to Twitter on Tuesday to tell the world that he plans to quit music after the release of “X,” his upcoming LP.
The R&B singer said he’s “tired of being famous for a mistake” he made when he was 18, referencing when he assaulted Rihanna.
Both Brown, who has had a string of other post-assault altercations and incidents on his rap sheet, and the music industry, which has promoted and booked Brown since shortly after the assault, have faced near constant criticism since the horrific event that took place before the 2009 Grammys.

The strangeness of the world of the very small that allows a particle to be in two states at once may extend to larger scales, two new studies reveal. If the research proves true, that would bolster the validity of a thought experiment suggesting a cat can be both alive and dead at the same time.
The idea, called Schrödinger’s Cat after the physicist,Erwin Schrödinger, who proposed it in 1935, goes like this: Put a cat in a box with a vial of poison gas. The vial opens when a tiny piece of radioactive metal emits an alpha particle (the nucleus of a helium atom) as it decays. Emitting an alpha particle is a quantum-mechanical process, which means that whether it happens in any given stretch of time is basically random.

Miguel Angel Trevino Morales, the notoriously brutal leader of the feared Zetas drug cartel, was captured before dawn Monday in the first major blow against an organized crime leader by a Mexican administration struggling to drive down persistently high levels of violence, officials announced.
Trevino Morales, 40, was captured by Mexican Marines who intercepted a pickup truck with $2 million in cash on a dirt road in the countryside outside the border city of Nuevo Laredo, which has long served as the Zetas’ base of operations. The truck was halted by a Marine helicopter and Trevino Morales was taken into custody along with a bodyguard and an accountant and eight guns, government spokesman Eduardo Sanchez told reporters.
Sanchez said the Marines had been watching rural roads between the Texas border states of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas for signs of Trevino Morales, who is charged with murder, torture, kidnapping and other crimes.
