An Arizona judge on Friday refused to grant a divorce for a transgender Arizona man who gave birth to three children after beginning to change his sex from female.
Maricopa County Family Court Judge Douglas Gerlach ruled that Arizona’s ban on same-sex marriages prevents Thomas Beatie’s 9-year union from being recognized as valid.
Thomas Beatie was born a woman and later underwent a double-mastectomy, and began testosterone hormone therapy and psychological treatment to become a man, but he retained female reproductive organs and gave birth to three children.

A portrait of Jesus that hangs prominently in an entrance way at a rural Ohio public school is in violation of the U.S. Constitution and should be removed, a federal lawsuit filed Thursday says.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio and the Madison, Wis.-based Freedom From Religion Foundation say the large portrait at Jackson Middle School unconstitutionally promotes religion. The two groups seek a court order requiring the school to remove the portrait and prohibiting its re-hanging or any substantially similar display in the future.
“The maintenance and display of the portrait has the effect of advancing and endorsing one religion, improperly entangling the State in religious affairs, and violating the personal consciences of plaintiffs,” the lawsuit says.

In the second century, an ethnically Greek Roman named Galen became doctor to the gladiators. His glimpses into the human body via these warriors’ wounds, combined with much more systematic dissections of animals, became the basis of Islamic and European medicine for centuries.
Galen’s texts wouldn’t be challenged for anatomical supremacy until the Renaissance, when human dissections — often in public — surged in popularity. But doctors in medieval Europe weren’t as idle as it may seem, as a new analysis of the oldest-known preserved human dissection in Europe reveals.

This anatomical specimen dating to the 1200s is the oldest known in Europe.

A 26-year-old Chinese immigrant who was convicted of being an enforcer for a Taiwan-based gang was sentenced Tuesday to spend the rest of his life in a Nevada prison for killing one person and wounding two others in a bloody knife attack in a Las Vegas karaoke bar almost four years ago.
Xiao Ye Bai’s tears fell on his written apology as he told a Clark County District Court judge through a Mandarin interpreter that he knew his sorrow couldn’t atone for his crimes including murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, conspiracy and extortion.

News of Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation was greeted with almost immediate speculation when it was announced Monday. Why had the pontiff decided to do what no one in nearly 600 years had felt necessary?
Now, Benedict’s brother Georg Ratzinger, 89, is beginning to shed some light on what may have motivated his famous younger brother.
Speaking with reporters in Germany on Tuesday, Ratzinger said that his brother’s eight years at the helm of the Catholic Church had been difficult ones, both physically and mentally, NBC News reports.

Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday that he would resign on Feb. 28 because he was simply too infirm to carry on — the first pontiff to do so in nearly 600 years. The decision sets the stage for a conclave to elect a new pope before the end of March.
The 85-year-old pope announced his decision in Latin during a meeting of Vatican cardinals on Monday morning.
He emphasized that carrying out the duties of being pope — the leader of more than a billion Roman Catholics worldwide — requires “both strength of mind and body.”

The death toll from the notorious killing spree unleashed by Charles Manson across Southern California is higher than previously thought, according to a lawyer who represented one of Manson’s followers.
Fox’s Los Angeles station obtained a recording of Bill Boyd, a lawyer for a “Manson family” convicted killer, alleging that Manson told his client about other slayings.
“He told me about a bunch of other people Manson had killed,” Boyd said in an interview recorded about his client Charles “Tex” Watson. “He was extremely candid.”

A British schoolgirl visiting relatives in a rural village in northern Jamaica was fatally shot when a lone gunman opened fire on a group of family members as they gathered at a roadside shop, officials said Sunday.
Imani Green, 8, of Balham in south London, was standing inside a clapboard grocery store and bar with Jamaican relatives Friday evening when a gunman wearing a hoodie shot the child in the head and shoulder before also shooting and wounding three adult members of her family.

Sometime in mid-July, Anthony Dowdell put on his favorite plaid shirt, drove his Dodge pickup to the parking lot of a Sam’s Club in Linden, N.J., leaned back in the driver’s seat, and shot himself.
Nobody knows exactly when the 39-year-old, who went by the online moniker “Dare Dellcan,” took his life. Nobody knows why the normally cheery creative director and design company owner did it. And for the first couple of days, few people besides the police officers who found his body on July 16 knew he was dead.

Watch human rights lawyer Karen Tse explain why it’s possible to end torture anywhere in the world in our lifetime.
While my TED talk was categorized under the “Dark Side”, what I wanted to share most deeply was the beauty and light that courageous lawyers and defenders bring into the darkest corners of police stations and prisons cells. At International Bridges to Justice, our goal is that a lawyer will meet someone as soon as possible after detention.
