A 17-year-old Canadian girl died Sunday following a suicide attempt last week. The family of Rehtaeh Parsons said that their daughter never recovered from an alleged rape by four teenage boys in November 2011 that left her deeply depressed and rejected by her community.
Placed on life support last Thursday at a local hospital, Rehtaeh Parsons died on April 7 after her family made the decision to take her off the life support.
In a Facebook memorial page, the girl’s mother, Leah Parsons, wrote that Rehtaeh had been shunned and harassed after one of the boys allegedly involved in the rape took a picture of the incident and distributed it to their “school and community, where it quickly went viral.”

For 42 years, we have waged war against our own people that we have disguised as the “War on Drugs.” Forty-two years of failure that has cost the American taxpayers $1 trillion dollars, resulted in 45 million drug arrests, and overfilled America’s prisons while failing to reduce the availability, sale, or use of drugs in the United States. Instead, it destroyed the fabric of communities of color, where diseased, innocent people in need of drug rehabilitation were trained in violent criminal behavior and became lifetime consumers of the prison industrial complex. All the while, it led America to become the world’s leading jailer, with 2.3 million of our citizens behind bars, more than any country on earth. Tomorrow, we will begin a “cyber march” on Washington to stop this five-decade-long misery and devastation of humanity, that has resulted in one in every 15 African-American men in prison.

Since the Affordable Care Act passed into law, companies have been vocal about the drastic measures they’ll take to avoid paying for basic health care coverage for their employees, including cutting hours and firing workers.
An increasing number of companies now say paying the government’s penalty to break the law will be cheaper than following it, The Wall Street Journal reports.
An Obamacare provision that goes into effect next year requires businesses with 50 or more full-time workers to provide health care coverage for employees. For businesses that don’t, there is a $2,000 penalty for each full-time worker above the 30-employee threshold. (Full-time workers are defined as anyone who works more than 30 hours a week in a given month.)

Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum was fatally shot Wednesday outside the Mingo County courthouse, WCHS reports.
The courthouse, located in Williamson, W. Va., has been evacuated, WSAZ reports.
WCHS reports that a suspect has been taken into custody.
The suspect was shot but is “alert and talking,” and has been taken to the hospital, according to the Charleston Daily Mail. He was shot while attempting to flee the crime scene, West Virginia State Police said, according to WSAZ.
Crum was eating lunch when a suspect drove by and fired at him, a county commissioner said, according to the Charleston Daily Mail. West Virginia House Delegate Justin Marcum said Crum enjoyed having his lunch in a place where he could see a former “pill mill” that was raided in 2010, the paper reported.

Investigators say they have recovered a gun that was sought after an alleged white supremacist gang member was arrested during the investigation into the killing of Colorado’s prisons chiefs.
James Lohr was arrested early Friday after a brief chase in Colorado Springs.
Investigators say surveillance video showed a firearm being thrown from Lohr’s vehicle before his arrest and two men spotting it and taking it. Investigators say someone who received the gun turned it in Friday night.
Authorities had said they were looking for Lohr and a fellow 211 Crew prison gang member as persons of interest in the slaying of Tom Clements.

A hi-tech bracelet could soon be helping civil rights and aid workers at risk of being kidnapped or killed.
When triggered, the personal alarm uses phone and sat-nav technology to warn that its wearer is in danger.
Warnings are sent in the form of messages to Facebook and Twitter to rally support and ensure people do not disappear without trace.
The first bracelets are being given out this week and funding is being sought to make many more.
The bracelets have been developed by the Civil Rights Defenders campaign group in a bid to help workers in war zones and other areas of conflict.

Trayvon Martin’s family has reached a settlement in a wrongful death suit they filed against the homeowners association of the sub-division where Martin was killed, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
Martin was shot to death just steps from his father’s home on Feb. 26, 2012, by volunteer neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. The case drew national attention last year as the Sanford Police Department vacillated on whether to file charges against Zimmerman, who indicated that he’d shot Martin only after being attacked. Zimmerman has been charged with second degree murder and is currently awaiting trial.

In the year since it landed on the international news radar, the Trayvon Martin case has raised a global discussion about Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” law. But in a stunning twist of events Tuesday morning, George Zimmerman’s attorneys waived their client’s right to a scheduled April 22 hearing that was to be held under the law that has sparked so much debate, ABC news reports.
Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch volunteer who is facing second-degree murder charges for the shooting of 17-year-old Martin, is awaiting trial set for June 10, 2013. His counsel’s move waiving his right to the April hearing leaves open the opportunity for it to be rolled into Zimmerman’s trial this summer, and gives the defense more time to prepare, an obvious concern after a motion to delay the proceedings was denied.

A woman has become head of the CIA’s National Clandestine Service for the first time, it emerged today.
The unnamed operative was made acting director of the service last month – evoking parallels to fictional female spies from the likes of Homeland and Zero Dark Thirty.
For the woman to be given the job permanently, however, officials may have to overlook her controversial background, which included ordering videos of alleged torture to be destroyed.
