Being transgender used to be the kind of thing that could make a modeling career come tumbling down.
There was Vogue model April Ashley, whose career abruptly ended in 1961 after being outed by a friend. Then there was Tracey “Africa” Norman, who modeled for Italian Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and was outed in the early 1980s, signaling the end of her career as well.
Times have thankfully changed. Not only is Norman back in the spotlight but there is now a new league of people who are trans and killing the modeling game. Hell, there’s even a modeling agency, called Slay Management, specifically for trans models.
To get a peek into this ever-growing industry, Mic spoke with a number of trans models working today. Here, seven models — including Laith Ashley De La Cruz, Isis King, Arisce Wanzer and Dominique Jackson, who are signed to Slay and star in the trans modeling TV show Strut — speak about what they hope to achieve in 2017, and how the progress thus far in the trans modeling industry is helping them achieve those dreams.
A black church in Mississippi was burned and vandalized with pro-Donald Trump graffiti late Tuesday.
Authorities responded to the fire at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville, Mississippi, Tuesday night. Delta Daily News reports that the majority of the damage was to the main sanctuary and there were no reported injuries. Someone had spray-painted the words “Vote Trump” along the side of the building.
A woman at the nearby Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church told The Huffington Post that Hopewell is a historically black church. She said the community is in shock over what happened.
Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons called the incident “a heinous, hateful and cowardly act” in a press conference Wednesday, adding that it was “an attack on the black church and the black community.”

When it comes to preventing pregnancy, there are plenty of contraceptive options — like birth control pills, implants and IUDs — designed for people with female reproductive systems. But for people with male reproductive systems? Sadly, not so much.
But that could change. An injectable contraceptive — the latest in a series of forays into birth control for people with penises — proved highly effective at preventing pregnancies in a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. Despite various side effects — including mood disorders, acne and erectile dysfunction — a majority of the participants were happy with the birth control method, and said they’d use it if it were available.
“The study found it is possible to have a hormonal contraceptive for men that reduces the risk of unplanned pregnancies in the partners of men who use it,” researcher Mario Festin said, according to the BBC.
Apple ships each iPhone with a bundle of preloaded apps. They can get the job done in a pinch, but most of them are not very good. This could not be more true for the iPhone’s Mail app, which, like most native Apple apps, mistakes simplicity for limitedness.
Email is a conduit for the activities in our lives — both personal and professional. The iPhone’s mail app doesn’t sync information and files from apps like Dropbox or Google Calendar. Having access to these platforms is vital for efficiently organizing responsibilities. To streamline that process, its best to turn to a third-party email client. But which one? The answer is clear.
Microsoft Outlook is the best iPhone email map by far. The Verge agrees with that sentiment, writing: “Outlook honestly feels like a next-generation email app, something that will force its competitors to do a lot of work to catch up. If you want full control over your inbox and the services that surround it, Outlook is your only choice.”

Thanks to fairy tales and legends of the Blair Witch variety, a dense, dark forest can elicit feelings of dread. And while most spooky moments can be chalked up to our campfire imaginations running wild, some places around the world carry legitimately terrifying histories that are much harder to brush off with a nervous laugh. From woods with high-pitched screams echoing through the trees to the tragic site of hundreds of deaths, these seven forests are certainly not for the faint of heart.
Traumatic photos showing a dead Syrian boy lying face down in the sand of a tourist beach in Turkey on Wednesday once again highlighted the immense humanitarian toll of the refugee and migrant crisis in Europe.
Note: This article contains disturbing images from the beach at Bodrum that will be upsetting to some readers.
Still young enough to wear velcro shoes, the child’s body was found on shore after two boats carrying Syrian refugees capsized. The boats were attempting to journey from the Turkish town of Bodrum to the island of Kos in Greece.
Survivors say at least 12 people died in the failed crossing, including four children and a woman. Seven other people were rescued.

As the nation reels from yet another high-profile gun violence tragedy — this time in a movie theater in Louisiana — photographer Joe Quint was, sadly, not surprised.
“We’ve come to accept [gun violence] as tragic and awful and a part of life, but no one expects to be sitting in a movie theater and watching a comedy and someone stands up and starts shooting,” Quint told The Huffington Post Friday. “That’s not normal.”
Despite the abnormality of the experience, Americans “haven’t had the collective shift in consciousness yet to rise up with a unified voice and say ‘enough’.”

“A sound came out of me that I don’t ever want to hear again,” says Eric, as he remembers identifying the body of his daughter, who was killed in a mass shooting at Northern Illinois University.
We already know that the spiders from Mars are real — but has the NASA rover Curiosity picked up real evidence of extraterrestrial life on the Red Planet?
Conspiracy theorists think so. Some of these photos — taken by the Curiosity over the past year and on other missions to Mars — look a lot like rocks. Some of them look a lot more peculiar, like the “iguana” found earlier this month. All of them are the stuff of Internet legend, and many believe that NASA is hiding something.
