Every decision the Philadelphia Eagles make as an organization is informed by analytics, including the most consequential in-game decision in franchise history — the one that led to the Philly Special.
There is a large bronze statue at Lincoln Financial Field commemorating the conversation on the sideline between coach Doug Pederson and quarterback Nick Foles during Super Bowl LII that led to the famous playcall on fourth-and-goal late in the first half.
“You want Philly Philly?” Foles asked.
“Yeah,” Pederson replied after a beat. “Let’s do it.”
Far less celebrated is the conversation moments before between Pederson and Ryan Paganetti, one of two members of the Eagles analytics department who has a direct line of communication to the coach in-game. Paganetti, who has a B.S. in economics from Dartmouth and also serves as the team’s assistant linebackers coach, is responsible for feeding Pederson math-based recommendations when it comes to, among other things, going for it on fourth down.

Mike Foltynewicz is almost back to his All-Star form of a year ago.
Foltynewicz threw seven impressive innings, Josh Donaldson and Ronald Acuna Jr. hit homers and the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-2 on Monday night.
Atlanta won its 90th game, increased its lead over Washington to 9 1/2 games and reduced its magic number to 10 with 17 games remaining.
“It’s a very good number, that’s for sure,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said about matching last season’s win total. “We’ve got a lot of baseball to play, so hopefully we get a lot more.”
The Phillies fell three games behind the Cubs for the second wild-card spot in the NL.

Sean Rodriguez lined a home run leading off the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Philadelphia Phillies a 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night.
Josh Bell hit a solo homer off Philadelphia closer Hector Neris to tie it at 5 in the ninth after Corey Dickerson hit a two-run shot against his former team in the eighth to give the Phillies a one-run lead.
But after stranding five runners in the ninth and 10th, the Phillies won it when Rodriguez went deep against Michael Feliz (2-4) for his fourth career walk-off homer. Rodriguez was in a 1-for-21 slump before he connected.

Pope Francis arrived in the City of Brotherly Love on Saturday for the final leg of his U.S. visit — a festive weekend devoted to celebrating Catholic families.
The pontiff’s plane touched down at the Philadelphia airport after takeoff from New York, bringing him to a city of blocked-off streets, sidewalks lined with portable potties, and checkpoints manned by police, National Guardsmen and border agents.
After speeches to Congress and the United Nations earlier this week aimed at spurring world leaders toward bold action on immigration and the environment, he is expected to focus more heavily on ordinary Catholics during his two days in Philadelphia.

Federal safety investigators probing the deadly Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia were waiting to interview the train’s engineer, whose attorney said on Thursday he did not remember the crash that killed seven people and injured more than 200 others.
The train bound for New York City from Washington was barreling into a curve at more than 100 miles per hour on Tuesday night, twice the speed limit, when the engineer slammed on the brakes, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said.
Investigators said they have not yet interviewed the train’s engineer, identified by a city official as Brandon Bostian, to give him time to recover.

Pope Francis’ confirmed Monday that his trip to the United States this fall will include stops in Washington and New York City, in addition to the previously announced visit to Philadelphia.
The pontiff told reporters he wishes he could enter the U.S. through the Mexican border “as a sign of brotherhood and of help to the immigrants,” but will probably just fly directly to the East Coast.
“You know that [to] go to Mexico without going to visit the Madonna [of Guadalupe] would be a drama. A war could break out,” he said, laughing. “I think there will only be those three cities. Later there will be time to go to Mexico.”
