NASA announced Thursday that its Messenger probe has discovered new evidence of water ice on Mercury.
In the announcement, Sean Solomon, principal investigator for the Mercury Messenger program, said the probe had uncovered new evidence that deposits in permanently shadowed regions of Mercury’s poles is water ice. The ice is found predominantly in impact craters, according to data obtained by Messenger.

to be deposits of water ice.

Alt-week takes a look at the best science and alternative tech stories from the last seven days.
This week, it’s all about the hard stuff. Science, that is. Whatever you were thinking of, forget it. Anyhoo, NASA has learned how to get space itself to its own damn exploration, quantum foam might be proven with a fridge and a laser, self-filling water bottles could be in our future and we could see 3D printed Xbox controllers in our lifetime. This, friends, is alt-week.

Solar system bodies unprotected by even a bit of atmosphere inevitably age—except, apparently, for the asteroid Vesta. Other airless bodies, including the moon, fall prey to blasts of cosmic dust and charged particles in the sun’s wind. But viewed from Earth, 550-kilometer-diameter Vesta seemed immune to all that.
This week, researchers analyzing spectral color data returned by the Dawn spacecraft can confirm that Vesta has mysteriously escaped eons of the kind of “space weathering” that has aged the surface of other asteroids. And Dawn’s spectral observations are also showing how a well-known “gardening” process on asteroids is smoothing out Vesta’s age spots.

As we know it, 3D printing is usually confined to small-scale projects like headphones. NASA is ever so slightly more ambitious. It’s using a closely related technique from Concept Laser, selective laser melting, to build elements of its Space Launch System on a pace that wouldn’t be feasible with traditional methods. By firing brief, exact laser pulses at metal powder, Concept Laser’s CAD system creates solid metal parts that are geometrically complex but don’t need to be welded together.

The Curiosity Rover has found evidence of an ancient stream that flowed “vigorously” on Mars where the Rover is now exploring, NASA said on Thursday.
NPR reports that this is “definitive proof” that water once existed on Mars.

Nasa’s new Mars rover has returned its first 360-degree colour panorama from the surface of the Red Planet. The Curiosity robot used its wideangle science camera placed high up on a mast to acquire the frames.
The low-resolution vista shows at centre the big mountain that lies in the middle of Gale Crater, the deep depression in which the rover landed.

Over the past 50 years, the salty parts of the oceans have become saltier and the fresh regions have become fresher, and the degree of change is greater than scientists can explain.
Researchers are heading out into one particularly salty ocean region, in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, in the hopes of better understanding what drives variation in salinity in the upper ocean.

Is there life on Mars after all?
A provocative new study concludes that the twin robotic probes NASA put on Mars in 1976 may have detected signs of “microbial life” on the Red Planet. At the time, researchers concluded that the Viking 1 and 2 probes had detected no such signs–and the same is true of subsequent probes, landers, and rovers sent to Mars, according to Popular Science.
