The smart home revolution is only beginning. It’s largely believed that one day all products in the house will be connected to the Internet and work together — your fridge will send a message to your TV telling you you’re out of milk; the lights will flicker if you’ve left the front door open.
But before we get to the point where products are figuratively talking to one another, manufacturers are launching web-connected items alongside their traditional offerings. This includes everything from smart thermostats and garage doors to toothbrushes, tennis racquets and even your bed. They collect data about how you use them, learn your habits, typically connect to an app and give you feedback to improve your lifestyle.
These products are a part of a larger concept called the “Internet of Things,” which refers to items and things that are web-connected. But it’s not just small products — big ticket items like refrigerators are getting smarter too; there are even models that connect (and play) Internet radio, serve up recipes from popular webpages and even send your tweets.

It took Microsoft three tries, but it finally scored a hit with the Surface Pro 3, which the company touts as the “tablet that can replace your laptop.”
Now, three former Google engineers are running with that idea in the Android arena.
The Remix tablet, unveiled on Wednesday at CES 2015 by Chinese company Jide, looks a lot like one of Microsoft’s Surface devices. It’s about the same size with an 11.6-inch screen, and the edge has a similar trapezoid shape that makes it suited to sitting at an angle. The Remix also has both a kickstand and a magnetically attached keyboard — two Surface hallmarks. Even the volume control feels the same.

The iPhone’s answer to the BlackBerry keyboard, the Ryan Seacrest-backed Typo, is back. Like the first model, the Typo 2 turns your Apple smartphone into one with a QWERTY keyboard.
But the second version is a bit different — and this makes sense, considering Typo was hit with a lawsuit and pulled off the market for having a design too close to BlackBerry’s existing keyboard.
Seacrest and Typo cofounder Laurence Hallier developed the concept after realizing how some people lug around two phones: one for typing and correspondence and an iPhone for most everything else. The two developed the case for BlackBerry fans who’ve resisted switching to the iOS because of loyalty to a physical keyboard.

In the space between somewhat practical vehicles like the Segway and completely fad-driven curios like the Tamagotchi, there exists a middle ground of outlandish gadget that almost seems to make sense, but is weird enough that you might be too embarrassed to use it in public.
It’s still early days, but that appears to be the case with Acton’s RocketSkates, which look like a joint creation by the art departments of Judge Dredd and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Offering to motorize your feet, they are a recent Kickstarter success story. And depending on your temperament, the RocketSkates either look like a glimpse at the future, or an expensive prank.
Do they work as described? A demonstration video indicates that, yes, you can use the RocketSkates to traverse the city at fairly rapid speeds. But there are limitations.

Wearable technology is perhaps the most prolific trend in the tech industry today.
From activity-tracking fitness bands to Google Glass and Oculus Rift, big names are getting involved in the once-niche technology — and they’re getting involved in big ways.
You probably wouldn’t have guessed that the tech behind wearable computing devices finds much of its history in attempting to cheat casinos. Inventors built some of the first wearables in the 1960s and ’70s to count cards and improve a gambler’s odds at the roulette table.

Low battery, you may have met your match.
A new portable charging system aims to put on-the-go power in your pocket, boasting a set-up that reportedly doesn’t compromise on power or portability. Modulo, developed by Barcelona-based tech company Idapt, is a credit card-sized gadget that claims to power any USB device, wherever you go.
“All our lifestyle now goes to electronics — it’s portable, really portable,” Idapt CEO Jacques Giribet told Mashable. “We have designed a battery that is as small as possible, taking into account that we want it to give you the same power as the original battery.”

Facebook is indeed rolling out autoplaying videos for ad units in your News Feed on both mobile and desktop, something the Wall Street Journal pegged for arrival just a little while before it was made official. The autoplaying ads follow Facebook’s trial of autoplaying non-ad video content on both the web and mobile.
The reasoning behind the decision is simple math in terms of returned value for advertising partners: Facebook claims that its autoplaying videos have seen engagement in terms of views, likes and shares on mobile and desktop increase over 10 percent versus the non autoplaying kind since it started testing them back in September.
Earlier this month, Facebook flat-out revealed in a slide deck obtained by Ad Age that its organic reach was waning, a fact which was used as a stepping off point for the sale of ads, which can drive greater brand visibility. And here it’s foregrounding the interaction metrics – there’s no doubt this is a sales pitch to advertisers, more so than a way to “continue to improve the quality of ads you see in News Feed,” as Facebook actually claims in the release.

The Digital Dating World has seen its fair share of companies come and go over the years, and few have been able to give the usual suspects, like eHarmony, Match.com and OkCupid, a run for their respective monies. However, since bursting onto the scene in October of last year, Tinder has been making a play to become the next digital dating giant by focusing on an area where few (if any) of its predecessors have excelled: Your phone.
Drawing on the same addictive formula behind Hot or Not, Tinder allows those in search of a date (or a little casual flirting) to swipe through Facebook-powered profiles of prospective matches, accepting or rejecting based on visual appeal. Sure, it’s a bit superficial, but its game-ified approach to flirting is also more than a little addicting and has taken off among the SnapChat generation, beginning with college campuses.
In fact, since launching in October, Tinder has spread like wildfire — a fact that, as we reported in May, has had investors and potential acquirers drooling. Today, Tinder co-founder and CEO Sean Rad tells us, users have rated over seven billion profiles, and the app has served over 100 million matches in all (and is currently adding 1.5 million matches/day and growing, he says.)

Long stuck in fourth place, T-Mobile made itself a relevant mobile player in the United States again on Tuesday, with plans to rapidly roll out its 4G LTE network and offer bargain plans with no contracts to entice potential customers.
Oh, and it now offers that quaint little device called the iPhone 5.

While many may disagree on the whole concept, the “theory of evolution” actually applies in the Tech world, in particular the world of smart phones. Mobiles phones are not just mobile phones any more. They are not the simple bricks that were used for dialing numbers and occasionally sending costly short messages. Mobiles have evolved a lot over the last decade, and the evolution has been a sweet ride. Technology has been very kind to them on all fronts. They are not just boring slabs of bulky plastic, they are beautiful, thin and shiny lusty devices. They don’t have many clunky buttons now, they have capacitive touch screens. Most importantly though, they are not just number dialers, they are fully capable multimedia players, a planner, a portable disk, a GPS device and capable of a plethora of other tasks which were once only the domain of a PC.
