The new blockbuster game: Hollywood’s flop is China’s fortune

It had all the makings of a summer blockbuster, from its “Lord of the Rings”-style mythology to its bevy of computer-generated action scenes. But when “Warcraft,” a big-budget movie adaptation of the orcs-versus-humans video game series, hit American theaters in June 2016, it landed with a thud, scraping together about a quarter of its $160 million price tag.

On the other side of the world, however, “Warcraft” rode a wave of hype to a record-breaking opening and a total gross of more than $200 million. In China, home to 1.3 billion people and the second-largest box office on the planet behind the United States, the jam-packed premiere was “like a festival,” one fan told a local newspaper.

The commercial fortunes of “Warcraft” — DOA in the U.S., megahit in China — were unusually lopsided, but they were also a revealing example of the forces that have continued to reshape Hollywood, driving studio executives to rethink old business models.

An Oral History Of *NSYNC’s Breakup, According To Bandmates Not Named Justin Timberlake

.

In 2002, *NSYNC, the boy band of our collective pre-teen dreams, decided to go on hiatus at the height of their career. Lance Bass, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick and Justin Timberlake were stretched a little too thin and in need of some R&R, fans were led to believe.

But as the months rolled on and Timberlake released his first solo album, “Justified,” the situation proved to be a little more murky.

“There’s no reason my solo career and *NSYNC can’t coexist in the same universe. *NSYNC is in no danger. The break we’re on was a conscious move. We all wanted to do it, and we were ready to do it. Performing at stadiums every night for 50,000 fans takes a little out of you … The time was right; we were all in the same zone,” Timberlake told The New York Post in November 2002, before cryptically adding of his new record “Justified”: “This album is what I wanted to do.”

What Timberlake wanted to do, yes, and perhaps Chasez, who also headed into the studio to work on a solo project.

At the end of each year, National Geographic rounds up its best photos – and here we will take a look at 20 of them.

Every day throughout the year, National Geographic releases a Photo of the Day – some classic, others quirky, but they always select

an image with a story to tell. In their pick for 20 of the best photos, this year, they selected photographs with the most shares, likes and comments from the social sphere.

.

1. Cracking the Surface, Lake Baikal

Photographer Alexey Trofimov, captured quite an unusual picture of the ice, here. He writes that the ‘ice on Lake Baikal is a very interesting phenomenon.’

2. The Village, Hungary

This photograph was taken by Gabor Dvornik, who lives half a mile from The Village, which is set on a natural reserve in Sz‘dliget Hungary. While the air in this place is special every season, it is especially rare to have a nice, mist day. ‘It was utterly ghostly and very moody out there’ he writes.

3. When Penguins Attack, Antarctica

Captured with a GoPro on Antarctica’s sea ice. The photographer, Clinton Berry had studied the movements of the penguins for weeks. The day that this shot was taken, there were over 60 penguins and Berry says that there was a bit of luck involved too.

4. Against the Wind, Canada

In this shot, photographed by Domnic Roy, a snowy owl appears to be fighting against the elements during extreme weather conditions near Quebec City, Canada.

5. Something’s Fishy, British Colombia Coast, Canada

Photographed by Ian McAllister using an underwater housing, this shot captures an intimate portrait of a wolf wading through the inter-tidal zone on the British Colombia coast in Canada. The wolf took a break from eating herring roe to investigate the photographer’s half-submerged camera.

6. Who’s There?

While taking this photo, Cezary Wyszynski imagined this mouse thinking ‘Who was knocking at my door?’ Probably the Cat!!!

7. Falls in Autumn, Plitivice Lakes National Park, Croatia

This is the country’s oldest and largest National Park, which boasts 16 terraced lakes, formed by natural travertine dams that change color throughout the day. This photo was taken by Vedrana Tafra.

8. Bioluminous Larak, Iran

This shot was taken along the shore of Larak, Iran – an island in the Persian Gulf. ‘The magical lights of the Plankton enchanted me so that I snapped the shot,’ Pooyan Shadpoor says.

9. Mother of the Forest, Madagascar

The boabab trees on Madagascar are 800 years old. They are home to snakes, bats, bush babies, bees and at times, humans. The trees are an important source of water – once can store up to 4,000 litres of water in its trunk. This photo was taken by Marsel Van OOsten.

10. Fox Found, Gran Paradiso National Park, Italy

Gran Paradiso National Park, was once a royal hunting retreat. Here, a red fox lies in wait, camouflaged by the autumn woods. This photo was captured by Stefano Unterthiner.

11. Dancing with the Moon, Iceland

The vivid beams of light are a result of collisions between charged particles released from the sun’s atmosphere and gaseous particles in Earth’s atmosphere. This shot was captured by Andrew George.

12. Winter White, Gran Paradiso National Park, Italy

Another great shot taken at Italy’s Gran Paradiso National Park by Stefano Unterthiner. Among the wildlife inhabiting this pare are ibex, chamois, red foxes and ermines (pictured here).

13. Big Baby, Tonga

This young humpback whale was captured in the waters off Tonga. Karim Iliya writes that she ‘could not help but wave and smile at the newborn whale almost three times my length’ Curiosity got the better of it and emerging from under its mother’s fin, it swam toward me, approaching less than 30 centimetres (11 inches)

14. Bird Feeders, China

Abderazak Tissoukai was near Xingping in China’s Guanxi region when he took this shot – a cormorant fisherman at sunset. ‘Xingping is definitely one of the most beautiful places in China, with its scenic karst landscapes, and it traditional and genuine people,’ he writes.

15. Kit Friendly,Estonia

This kit fox appears to be weighing the presence of Kalmer Lehepuu’s camera lens. He writes that ‘on one beautiful evening, the mother went to get food and left the kits on their own.’ Lehepuu then snuck closer to observe them.

16. Shining Through, Apostle Islands, National Lakeshore, Wisconsin

This shot, taken by Ernie Vater, captures the setting sun shining the rough ice on the shore of a frozen Lake Superior. Part of the beauty of this place is its silence. Vater writes ‘you hear nothing except for the occasional creaking of the ice’.

17. Yellow Jellies, Rock Islands of Palau

These golden jellyfish are harmless to humans, they spend much of their time following the sun as it moves across the sky. Sunlight for these jellyfish is essential. Captured by Ciemon Frank Caballes.

18. All the Fish in the Sea, Cabo Pulmo

‘This is what our oceans should look like’, Jeff Hester, who captured this shot says. But Cabo Pulmo, a marine park off Mexico’s Baja California, hadn’t always been this way.

19. Imperial Blossoms, Japan

These weeping cherry tree blooms, were captured on the grounds of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto, Japan. They typically bloom in late March and early April. This photo was taken by Yukio Miki.

20. Hull-o, Caribbean Island of Bonaire

a popular destination for scuba divers. This ship was sunk after about 11 tonnes of Mary J was found hidden in it.

Did another advanced species exist on Earth before humans?

Our Milky Way galaxy contains tens of billions of potentially habitable planets, but we have no idea whether we’re alone. For now Earth is the only world known to harbor life, and among all the living things on our planet we assume Homo sapiens is the only species ever to have developed advanced technology.

But maybe that’s assuming too much.

In a mind-bending new paper entitled “The Silurian Hypothesis” — a reference to an ancient race of brainy reptiles featured in the British science fiction show “Doctor Who” — scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies and the University of Rochester take a critical look at the scientific evidence that ours is the only advanced civilization ever to have existed on our planet.

“Do we really know we were the first technological species on Earth?” asks Adam Frank, a professor of physics and astronomy at Rochester and a co-author of the paper. “We’ve had an industrial society for only about 300 years, but there’s been complex life on land for nearly 400 million years.”

With summer around the corner, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention experts are warning — beware the bugs!

A new report from the agency reveals that diseases transmitted through the bites of blood-feeding ticks, mosquitoes, and fleas are a “growing public health problem” in the United States.
.
Reported cases of what are called vector-borne diseases have more than tripled nationwide, growing from 27,388 cases reported in 2004 to a whopping 96,075 cases reported in 2016, according to the new Vital Signs report published by the CDC on Tuesday.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is well and appearing on ‘Dancing with the stars’ at 71 (photo below).

As a six-time NBA Champion, 19-time All-Star, six-time Most Valuable Player and the league’s all-time leading scorer, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is regarded as one of the greatest professional basketball players of all time. He is familiar with the concepts of discipline and overcoming adversity, but not only because of his athletic career.

In 2008, Abdul-Jabbar was diagnosed with Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) after experiencing hot flashes and sweats. He was treated with two targeted therapies — tyrosine kinase inhibitors: Gleevec (imatinib) and Tasigna (nilotinib). Last year, Abdul-Jabbar underwent a quadruple coronary bypass surgery on his 68th birthday but recovered fully. Today, he is a spokesperson for Novartis, the pharmaceutical company that manufactures both drugs that allowed him to survive cancer.

In March 2016, Abdul-Jabbar was asked to speak at the 20th Annual International Congress on Hematologic Malignancies®: Focus on Leukemias, Lymphomas and Myeloma, a meeting of over 125 oncologists and other oncology professionals. At the meeting, Abdul-Jabbar spoke with Heal about surviving CML, his role as an advocate and his advice to patients and survivors.

Miracle cures or modern quackery? Stem cell clinics multiply, with heartbreaking results for some patients.

Doris Tyler lay on the examining table as the doctor stuck a long, thin tube into her belly. The doctor pulled back a plunger, and the syringe quickly filled with yellow blobs tinged with pink.

“Look at that beautiful fat coming out. Liquid gold!” one of the clinic’s staff exclaimed in a video of the procedure provided to The Washington Post.

Hidden in that fat were stem cells with the amazing power to heal, the Stem Cell Center of Georgia had told Tyler. The clinic is one of hundreds that have popped up across the country, many offering treatments for conditions from Parkinson’s disease to autism to multiple sclerosis.

Tyler and her husband, Don, said their son created a GoFundMe page to raise the $8,900 fee for her procedure. (Zack Wittman for The Washington Post)

Să facem glume, nu război

🇲🇲Dear all peace-loving people around the world🇲🇲

In the world, human beings are facing various problems. People who are full of greed, anger, and ignorance are seen to be fighting with each other in words and deeds. As the fighting continues, various problems such as civil wars, wars of aggression, and wars of aggression are occurring. As world peace is being destroyed, humans are facing unbearable problems. Innocent children and women are not getting the rights they deserve and deserve. I can't think of one thing every time. What is it? The United Nations. If we look at the responsibilities and duties of the United Nations, I think it is not suitable for solving the problems that are happening in the world today. In fact, the United Nations and the World Security Council, such an organization must rule the world, must be able to give orders, and must have various ways to obey orders. There must be no organization that can influence more than that organization. There should be experts from each country. They can even dominate the superpowers like the US, China, and Britain. Only then will global peace be achieved quickly. Now, if a country with power develops more militarily, economically, or socially than its own country, then powerful countries will jealously seek out enemies and wage war. Or they will attack with fighter jets. In this, innocent people are losing their lives. No one understands the value of a life. You should think about how to achieve global peace by controlling these. If the US continues to be the permanent president of the UN, world peace will never be achieved. If you think carefully, no one sees that they are working for the common good, but for their own benefit, for the benefit of their own country. The permanent president of the UN and the Security Council has rejected this, As a young Rohingya, I have come to realize that only by electing the president and secretary from among the countries in the world through a secret ballot system and governing the world fairly can we achieve global peace. The United Nations and the Security Council are organizations in which any country must govern, give orders, and make them obey their orders. For example, only when a defendant is tried in court can we hold the leaders of the countries in check and control them, can we achieve global peace smoothly. Otherwise, it will not be easy for powerful countries to use various excuses to end this war every year, every year, for the benefit of themselves and their countries. No country's leaders pay any attention to the words of the United Nations and the Security Council. If we look at it in practice, look at the Rohingya issue. Myanmar is a small country. Even that country has been under siege for 8 years. What action can be taken? Why is the UN and the Security Council Powerless? Without such Power, how can the organization bring about global peace? Everyone should think about it. Whether there is a veto or a strong one, all countries in the world can only achieve global peace if they are subject to the UN and the Security Council. Seek peace in the quiet embrace of nature. Peace is an indispensable need of the human race. It is not as if one person can kill another person, and it is as if one country can attack another country, but instead of trying to build peace, we must try to destroy the peace now, and the world is getting hotter and is on the verge of collapse. I especially appeal to all the world experts to urgently try to bring about peace in all parts of the world. Mr, Noor Muhamed Arkhan Rohingya Youth Myanmar
