Within the tiny stretch of land on Broadway and Seventh Avenue between 42nd and 47th Streets — only 0.1% of New York City’s total land area — lies a whopping 11% of the city’s economic output.
On average, 330,000 people visit Times Square every day, a mixture of 56% locals and 44% out-of-towners. To call it “busy” would be to call Celine Dion merely “capable” of belting out an F5 note.
But while the number of daily visitors continues to rise, for nearly a decade Times Square has quietly gone through a dramatic reinvention, all in an effort to make it more pedestrian friendly. And while it may look like an easy solution for the notoriously congested area, its decades of debate and planning show just how complex the restructuring of the most visited destination in the United States truly has been.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a new drug on Friday that reduces the complications associated with sickle cell disease — the first drug approved for the blood disorder in more than 20 years.
The drug, called Endari, consists of L-glutamine, which is an amino acid, and is approved for sickle cell patients five years and older.
“I am hoping we are finally seeing channels opening, and that this will be the first of many new drugs to hit the market [for sickle cell disease],” said Dr. Alexis A. Thompson, head of the Hematology Section and Director of the Comprehensive Thalassemia Program at the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

Grassley, R-Iowa, previewed his intentions Wednesday when he told reporters that he wanted former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort to testify before the committee as early as next week, following revelations related to Trump Jr.’s email exchange about meeting with a Russian lawyer regarding potentially damaging information against Hillary Clinton.
.
“I think it’s just raised a lot of questions. but the real way that I feel comfortable inviting him is ever since President Trump was elected,” Grassley said Thursday. “It seems like every conversation that has come from somebody in the family where there’s been some sort of issue, they’ve seemed always to be very, very open.”

The new Senate Republican health care bill is out. It’s basically the same as the old one.
New legislative language unveiled by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) Thursday does include some notable changes, including leaving in place Affordable Care Act taxes on wealthy individuals and giving in to conservative demands that health insurance be further deregulated, according to a summary.
At its core, however, the revised version of the Better Care Reconciliation Act ― which McConnell pulled two weeks ago because too few Republican senators planned to vote for it ― remains a vehicle for massive cuts to Medicaid, less financial assistance for people who buy private health insurance, and the return of skimpy junk insurance policies and discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. Taxes on the rich would remain, but health care companies would enjoy a major tax cut.

Some reasons to visit Iceland.
It’s got a world’s worth of dazzling and dangerous natural wonders, all in one country.
In Iceland, there’s a geothermal pool around every corner — another benevolent byproduct of all those angry volcanoes.
Geothermal pools are water heated by energy from the earth. Warm enough to comfortably swim in.
Most of the time, they’re outdoors. So are the so-called hot pots — Iceland’s version of Jacuzzis. It’s a good way to shoot the breeze with the locals. Not hard to do, since most speak English.

This may be the perfect unsolved mystery, if you are a Dr. Who fan that is. A few years back, in 2008 to be precise, archeologists in China were excavating an ancient tomb in Shangsi County that dates back to the Ming Dynasty and is roughly 400 years old. While attempting to remove the tomb, a piece of rock dislodged and fell to the ground.
When one of the archeologists picked it up and began examining it, the true mystery of the tomb began to emerge. Not a rock at all, the very small article turned out to be a Swiss watch that couldn’t be more than 100 years old. The watch, sized to fit on a woman’s finger much like a modern ring, stopped running at 10:06 and though caked in dirt, it was still easy to make out the word “Swiss” imprinted on the backside of the watch.
The mystery continues to build as archeologists believe that the tomb where the ring was found was undisturbed and that they were the first to open it. Also confusing is where would this ring have come from? The watch has created many more questions than can be answered, but as scientists do, they keep asking.
Who would have wanted to plant an article here? Could it have been washed here by heavy rains? Is it an elaborate hoax by the archeologists involved in the dig, or possibly a terrible prank played out on a society that seems to thrive on the unexpected? We may never know the answers, but we can be certain as long as it’s a mystery, someone will be investigating it.

Scientists from Project MIDAS had been monitoring a break in the Larsen C ice shelf — the fourth largest in Antarctica — following the collapse of the Larsen A ice shelf in 1995 and had observed significant advances in the rift over the past 12 months.
.
Experts said the separation of a 5,800 square kilometers (2,239 square miles) section of Larsen C was confirmed to have broken away between Monday and Wednesday by NASA’s Aqua MODIS satellite, which is capable of producing images in thermal infrared at a resolution of 1 km.
.
“We have been anticipating this event for months, and have been surprised how long it took for the rift to break through the final few kilometers of ice,” Professor Adrian Luckman of Swansea University, lead investigator of the MIDAS project said in a statement.

Found in Peru, in the Pampa desserts, the Nazca lines are like nothing you’ve ever seen before. The lines, which are technically geoglyphs, are many miles long and were created by ancient civilizations removing both dirt and the red rock typically found in the area to a depth of about one foot, leaving behind a light colored sand creating a sort of reverse negative picture. In many regions, geoglyphs like this wouldn’t last due to weather, however since Nazca is so protected from wind, rain and erosion, the Nazca Lines have survived for well over 2000 years.
The geoglyphs are so large, and cover so much terrain, that even though they were discovered in 1926, it wasn’t until commercial airline flights began in the 1930s that humans realized the extent of this discovery. From the sky, it was much easier to see how enormous the Lines actually were, and for the first time scientists and archeologists were able to see most of the geometric patterns and actual pictures that the lines created.
Scientists have been disagreeing for years about the lines; not only their origins but also about what they were used for and some 90 years later still can’t agree. Some scientist believe the lines were created by the Nazca people for varied reasons while others still believe that it’s possible that the Nazca had help from extraterrestrials. The main explanations for the use of the lines is as varied as some of the lines themselves, ideas ranging from the lines were used as sort of a road map so the villagers wouldn’t get lost to the lines were used as an irrigation system, and in an area that received only about 20 inches of rain a year, this sounds reasonable.
A few other theories include that the lines could act like an astronomical calendar or possibly was religion based and created for the gods in honor to them or as a means to garner their forgiveness. However the Nazca lines were created and used, it is clear that this mystery has kept our scientists busy, and confused, for many years. With the discovery just a few years ago of even more lines, it appears they will have their hands full for a little while more.
.
What could these lines be used for?
