Low battery, you may have met your match.
A new portable charging system aims to put on-the-go power in your pocket, boasting a set-up that reportedly doesn’t compromise on power or portability. Modulo, developed by Barcelona-based tech company Idapt, is a credit card-sized gadget that claims to power any USB device, wherever you go.
“All our lifestyle now goes to electronics — it’s portable, really portable,” Idapt CEO Jacques Giribet told Mashable. “We have designed a battery that is as small as possible, taking into account that we want it to give you the same power as the original battery.”

This piece is part of Mashable Spotlight, which presents in-depth looks at the people, concepts and issues shaping our digital world.
I’m flapping my wings. Not hard, but slowly and smoothly. At 25 feet across, my wingspan is so great I don’t need to exert much energy to achieve lift. In the distance, I see an island under an azure sky. This is my home. Off to my west, the sun is setting and the sky glows with warm, orange light.
Spotting movement in the ocean below, I bend my body slightly to the left and begin a gentle dive. As I approach the shore, I spot my prey splashing in the shallows. I lean back, keeping my wings fully extended so I can glide just above the water. I’m right over the fish. I pull in my wings, bend forward sharply and dive into the water. I emerge with a fish in my mouth. Success.

The rumors and feature teases are true: New Twitter profiles are here, with a brand-new, yet oddly familiar, look. The new design is rolling out slowly, unless you’re a celebrity or a new user. And it may represent a real turning point.
Like many people who live on Twitter, I don’t look at my own profile page very often. I spend most of my time on the Twitter.com homepage to see tweets from all the accounts I follow, and my Notifications page to track replies and mentions of my handle. I last managed my Twitter profile ages ago.
However, I look at other users’ profile pages fairly often. It’s where I learn about who they are through their profile picture and their brief description of themselves, which may include details like job, location and a link for more information. In other words, profile pages are important, especially for brands, celebrities and new users.

In today’s world, people often express themselves via emoji.
One touch of your finger informs others that you’re annoyed, happy or sad without having to type — or worse, speak — a word.
Kiev artist Nastya Ptichek brought the new world into the old through her art project “Emoji-Nation,” which incorporates computer technology into classic paintings.
Ptichek recently told Wired that she “realized that standard iOS emojis strongly resemble some well-known paintings of famous artists,” like this emoji representation of Edvard Munch’s The Scream.

It appears that the billion-user club is about to get a new member.
Facebook announced the acquisition of messaging app WhatsApp on Wednesday, a deal worth up to $19 billion in cash and stock that puts serious muscle behind Facebook’s international reach.
In a call with investors to outline the acquisition, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum hinted multiple times that they expect WhatsApp to become a billion-user platform, a milestone that Facebook eclipsed less than 18 months ago.

Aching for a bigger iPhone? You may be in luck, because if The Wall Street Journal‘s latest report is correct, Apple is planning to launch two iPhones with a larger screen this year.
According to the report, one bigger iPhone will have a 4.5-inch display, while the other will have a screen “bigger than 5 inches”.
Exact dates when these devices might hit the market are absent, but the 4.5-inch phone is reportedly near mass production, while the bigger device is still in “preliminary development.”
Contrary to a rumor we’ve heard in Nov. 2013, this report claims neither device will have a curved screen.
Both devices will be made of metal, and — the boldest claim in the report — Apple will stop producing plastic phones, such as the iPhone 5C.

It seems there’s almost nothing computers can’t simulate these days: Now, a new computer program simulates human birth using 3D virtual reality.
The simulator is the first of its kind to take into account factors such as the shape of the mother’s body, and the shape and position of the baby. It could help doctors and midwives prepare for unusual or dangerous births, according to the researchers in England who developed it.
“You can’t see inside during a live birth. The simulator shows you what’s happening inside,” said Rudy Lapeer, a computer scientist at the University of East Anglia, leader of the research that was presented Nov. 22 at a conference on E-Health and Bioengineering in Romania.
Hospitals have used models to simulate the birthing process since the 1800s, Lapeer told LiveScience. But whereas most current simulators are based on known scenarios, the new simulator models the physics of childbirth — the basic forces exerted by the cervix, abdominal muscles and the doctor or midwife — so it can simulate an unfamiliar birth scenario.
The simulator is also designed to be patient-specific. Doctors can scan a pregnant woman, and then adapt the simulator to her anatomy. They can run through a number of scenarios based on previous births.

Twitter is more than just a home for 140-character overshares and hilarious parody accounts.
The microblogging platform has become a hub for monitoring breaking news and crowdsourcing ideas, and has even made history now and then. As Twitter continues to expand internationally, users have invented new tools and tricks to ramp up the experience.

We’ve already read about 3D-printing liquid metal. Now, a new patent awarded to Apple hints at the possibility of the company introducing liquid metals to the mobile market.
Apple is looking to incorporate 3D-printing liquid metal into its products, with the help of partner company Liquidmetal Technologies, whose patented fabrication processing rights were bought by Apple in 2010. The tech giant therefore holds the exclusive license for the development and sale of the processed liquid alloys.
According to Electronista, “The material is a group of alloys that have an atomic structure more similar to glass, with an amorphous quality.” This means the alloy can be molded into very complex shapes, all while maintaining strength.
Your next iPhone, iPad or even iWatch could potentially be encased in this printed alloy. As the technology develops, it’s possible that Apple may apply the material to even larger objects.
