If you’re a procrastinator, you know the feeling of being sidetracked by a bunch of kitten videos when there’s a huge project you should really be working on. It doesn’t feel great, not getting anything done. So why do we let ourselves procrastinate in the first place?

A recent video from School Of Life — a London-based organization dedicated to developing emotional intelligence through classes, therapy and more — suggests that overwhelming pressure to succeed could be part of the reason a procrastinator puts things off.

“I do nothing not because I’m lazy, but because I’m scared,” the timid character in the video says. “I’m scared that if I start, what I do will be horrible. I want things to be so amazing.”

Relaxing in front of a crackling fire (or at least the Netflix version) is one of the most enjoyable ways to spend a cold winter evening. And now scientists know why.

Watching a fire lowers blood pressure, according to new University of Alabama research. Our enjoyment of gazing at fire may be rooted in evolution, as the act of gathering around a fire dates back to prehistoric times.

The researchers, led by anthropologist Christopher Lynn, asked 226 adults to watch a video of a fireplace, and took their blood pressure before and after watching the video. They also asked participants to report on their experiences of the fire.

Many of us spend a large chunk of our waking lives at work, but rarely do we give much thought to how our on-the-clock environment might be affecting how we feel around the clock.

If the recent literature has anything to say about it, working in offices could be making us feel pretty crappy. Open office plans (and cubicles, to a certain extent) may be the worst offenders when it comes to harming employee wellness and productivity, and some studies on the fallbacks of the popular design have called the entire structure of American work life into question.

“The thinking goes that employees will be happier and more productive if they work together instead of being separated by thick office walls. Except they aren’t,” Fast Company wrote of the open office trend. “Far more workers stuck in cubicles and open office spaces are dissatisfied with their work environments than people in enclosed private offices.”
