Each spring, people flock to Kawasaki, Japan, to celebrate Kanamara Matsuri, aka the “Festival of the Steel Phallus.”
Held this year on April 6, the festival is a celebration of the penis and fertility. People parade gigantic phallic-shaped mikoshi (portable Shinto shrines) down the streets during the event, as revelers suck on penis lollipops, buy penis-themed memorabilia and pose with sculptures in the shape of — you guessed it — penises.
According to the BBC, the festival is believed to have roots in the 17th century, when prostitutes are said to have prayed for protection from sexually transmitted infections at Kawasaki’s Kanamara shrine.

For one-night stands, size does matter, but it’s not penis length that women are concerned about — it’s girth, a new study suggests.
In the study, 41 women viewed and handled penises made on a 3D printer. The models were blue, and ranged in size from 4 inches long and 2.5 inches in circumference to 8.5 inches long and 7 inches in circumference. They were asked to pick which of the 33 models they would prefer for a one-time partner, and which they would prefer for a long-term partner.
For one night stands, women selected penis models with slightly larger girth, on average, than those they selected for long-term relationships.

There are few joys quite like turning an everyday sidewalk into a gaping cave cascading with rainbow waterfalls. To achieve such an uncanny phenomenon, you can either experiment with some seriously hallucinogenic substances, or stumble across the visual treasure trove that is three-dimensional chalk art.
In the past few years the grassroots art form of 3D chalk has become a medium to be reckoned with. As the visual amalgamation of optical illusions, hyperrealism and public street art, the accessible technique appeals to pretty much everyone. Aside from its hypnotic affect and impressive technique, chalk art rules because the subject matter can truly be anything. Take a look at our roundup below, which includes everything from a giant snail to a game of Pac-Man. Just try and tell us this isn’t the most democratic, and psychedelic, art form out there.

Fox News anchor Gregg Jarrett was arrested on Tuesday after an incident in a bar at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport.
A roster at Hennepin County Jail shows Jarrett, 59, being held on obstructing the legal process by interfering with a peace officer, a misdemeanor. His bail was set at $300.
The news came just days after it was announced that Jarrett, a weekend anchor, would be taking time off for “personal reasons,” TV Newser reported last week.

The Memorial Day weekend saw a community eviscerated by gun violence that left several dead and many more injured.
But it wasn’t UC Santa Barbara that witnessed this particular round of bloodshed. It was New Orleans. By weekend’s end, the city had seen 19 people shot, four fatally. On Friday, a fight broke out at a high school graduation party that resulted in one person being killed and seven wounded. On Sunday, three men were shot with an assault rifle. That night, a murder took place at a Cajun seafood joint. On Monday morning, a triple shooting happened right outside a hospital, where people sitting in a car were hit with bullets in their backs, arms and legs. All survived. That same day, a 17-year-old died after being shot multiple times. Even earlier, a man riding his bike was shot under an overpass. The day ended with a homicide in the Lower Ninth Ward.

“Every great architect is — necessarily — a great poet. He must be a great original interpreter of his time, his day, his age.”
Those are the words of one undeniably great architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, whose visions of harmonious design and innovating urban planning amounted to his own brand of organic architecture. We’d argue that Wright wasn’t just an interpreter of his time — he was able to foresee the needs and desires of ages ahead of him. The architect is — necessarily — a visionary capable of seeing into the future.
In the spirit of architecture’s fortune telling abilities, we’ve put together a list of our favorite contemporary designs that shed light on the future of our visual world.

A Texas gun rights group has notified members that they are to “immediately cease” taking shotguns and rifles into private businesses unless invited to do so, backing down from a controversial strategy that has led several large restaurant chains to ask patrons to leave their guns at home.
The organization, Open Carry Texas, is one of many groups nationwide that advocate for the right of gun owners to wear and carry firearms openly in public. Photos from a rally by supporters of the group at a Dallas-area Chipotle restaurant went viral this week, prompting the burrito chain to declare that firearms are unwelcome in its restaurants.
On Friday, The Huffington Post reported that Chili’s was also reconsidering its policy after a similar rally at one of its San Antonio restaurants. Video apparently taken by a participant in the rally shows a confrontation with a woman, apparently a patron, who scolds the men for bringing large guns into a restaurant where children are eating.

Concert Hotels put together an interactive chart examining the recorded vocal ranges of the world’s greatest, and most popular, singers. Plotting the octaves successfully captured in the studio, the chart demonstrates just how far across the keyboard their pipes have spanned, listing the songs in which each vocalist has hit their lowest and highest notes.
At the top of the chart: Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose, closely followed by Mariah Carey, Prince, Steven Tyler and James Brown. At the very bottom: country singer Luke Bryan, who is just topped by Taylor Swift, Karen Carpenter, Sam Cooke and Justin Bieber.

Maysoon Zayid was not supposed to walk, nor be the amazing and capable person she is today. She beat the odds. Many children with cerebral palsy do not. Can other children like her surpass what doctors and others believe possible for them? The answer is a resounding yes⎯by harnessing the remarkable powers of the brain to change itself for the better. How can that be done?
Cerebral Palsy is an injury to the brain that interferes with the spontaneous process of movement development in the child. It is easy to mistake the child’s limitations to mean that the brain itself is limited in its capacity to learn and that the current limitations define what is possible for the child in the future.

In this life-affirming video, Sue Austin goes where few have been… in her wheelchair. Refusing to be defined by pity or limitations, she proves that we can’t let ourselves be defined by how other people see us — and that telling our own story sets us free.
